** UPDATES BELOW: OBAMA STATEMENT, VIDEO **

CNN reports:

The Rev. Jesse Jackson issued an apology to Barack Obama Wednesday for making what he called a "crude and hurtful" remark about the Illinois senator's recent comments directed toward some members of the black community.

According to Jackson, a Fox News microphone picked up comments he meant to deliver privately that seemed to disparage the presumptive Democratic nominee for appearing to lecture the black community on morality.

Jackson didn't elaborate on the context of his remarks, except to say he was trying to explain that Obama was hurting his relationship with black voters by recently conducting "moral" lectures at African-American churches.

Jackson's apology came a few hours before Fox News planned to air the remarks.

Speaking to CNN Wednesday, Jackson said he feels "very distressed" over the comments.

Story continues below

"This is a sound bite in a broader conversation about urban policy and racial disparities. I feel very distressed because I'm supportive of this campaign and with the senator, what he has done and is doing," he said. "I said he comes down as speaking down to black people. The moral message must be a much broader message. What we need really is racial justice and urban policy and jobs and health care. That's a range of issues on the menu.

"Then I said something I regret was crude. It was very private. And very much a sound bite," he also said.

More details from Clarence Page on The Swamp:

Well, Swamp fans, as Jackson explained to me by telephone, his remarks occurred during an off-air moment during a Fox New Channel interview that aired Sunday.

Jackson didn't realize that the mics were still "hot," as in turned on and recording when he made a few off-the-cuff remarks about Obama's faith-based programs.

Bill O'Reilly has the story and plans to report it on his Fox program, "The O'Reilly Factor" tonight.

Even though O'Reilly has booked me and another guest to respond to the video, he is withholding a full transcript or recording of Jackson's remarks even from me until the program airs.

So far I have only been told by a producer that Jackson criticizes Obama's proposed faith-based programs for "talking down to black people."

And (A warning here to younger or more sensitive readers) Jackson also says something about how the senator was "going to get his (twin objects of male anatomy) cut off."

Jackson, who recalled his remark as, "The senator is cutting off his you-know-what with black people," expressed deep regrets for saying it, even in what he thought was a "private conversation."

"I want to be clear," Jackson said. "My support for Barack Obama is unequivocal. I apologize to Barack and the Obama campaign for my crude and hurtful comments."

Update: Video of Jesse Jackson's remark:

Jackson apologized for his statement on CNN:

Update: A statement from the Obama campaign: "As someone who grew up without a father in the home, Senator Obama has spoken and written for many years about the issue of parental responsibility, including the importance of fathers participating in their children's lives. He also discusses our responsibility as a society to provide jobs, justice, and opportunity for all. He will continue to speak out about our responsibilities to ourselves and each other, and he of course accepts Reverend Jackson's apology," said Obama campaign spokesman Bill Burton.

And a very harsh statement from Jackson's son, Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr.:

I'm deeply outraged and disappointed in Reverend Jackson's reckless statements about Senator Barack Obama. His divisive and demeaning comments about the presumptive Democratic nominee -- and I believe the next president of the United States -- contradict his inspiring and courageous career.

Instead of tearing others down, Barack Obama wants to build the country up and bring people together so that we can move forward, together -- as one nation. The remarks like those uttered on Fox by Reverend Jackson do not advance the campaign's cause of building a more perfect Union.

Reverend Jackson is my dad and I'll always love him. He should know how hard that I've worked for the last year and a half as a national co-chair of Barack Obama's presidential campaign. So, I thoroughly reject and repudiate his ugly rhetoric. He should keep hope alive and any personal attacks and insults to himself.

If Faux News isn't airing something because "it's not relevant to public policy" then how do they justify even a nanosecond of BillO's nightly spinfest?

Jackson's a has-been and an angry man. I still think the n**s comment was worse because it showed such a deep resentment and bitterness about a newcomer's success.

There's aging gracefully and then--as Jackson, (Bill) Clinton, and McCain have shown us--there's just...aging.

Ignore rickford5150. His obvious glee for this comment says more about his character than it does about anything else.

BTW................Jackson didn't call Barack the n word, he just used to n word to describe the blacks Barack was "supposedly" talking down to.

I bet Jackson said more than that, but if he had come on Fox when Bill called and asked him to I bet that would had been a mess. He knew they had listen to the whole tape and the things he had said.I do not think it was just the N word. They say he readly talked bad about AA people. That is a shame.

I really do think that a black person using the n-word and a white person using the n-word are two completely different things. As a white male, I see the use of it among black people as an attempt to lessen the hurt by turning it into a joke. I'm thinking of Richard Pryor's early stand-up. They want to turn the tables, to celebrate what is supposed to hurt them. I have no idea how successful they are in doing so, but that's my impression.

I would never try to be in on the joke, though, b/c I'm not, plain and simple. And that's something white people need to realize, that there's no way we can be in on that joke. I know a white friend of mine who got into a long debate about being allowed to use the word, and it made me very uncomfortable that white people are so unable to understand that, yes, contrary to what we might like to believe, we DO have limits and boundaries we can't cross, even though we got away with crossing them for centuries it's time to grow up.

While we were talking about cartoons I guess this snuck by us. I like Rev. Jackson, but he always been prone to get a little out of hand with his remarks -- New Yorkers might remember his critique of New York. Is the world going to come to an end? His remarks are not that helpful to O, but lets move on anyway.

Are his remarks racist?

N***er is a word, just a word. This demonstrates the importance of intent in conversation and how our attempts to be so PC as to label words "bad", is just ridiculous. Listen to what people are really saying.

It may be just a word, but it's a word with impact. It's a word of segregation and hate and bigotry. It is a sad word, regardless of who speaks it.

I think it is sad that young African Americans have chosen to use this word to represent the African American community. Although I am against censorship of any kind, I wish they could find another word without so much historical baggage.

Do people get paid to go on FOX? Why do these fools go on that channel anyway?

Why hasnt the democratic party all banded together and decided they were going to say, "the Democratic party does not grant interviews to tabloid journalists" and be done with it?

Individuals decide when and where they will appear on TV. The party does not have that control. Democrats should go over to the belly of the beast (FOX NEWS) and debate the devils. I hate Fox News, but you know "swing voters" do watch Fox and so... I'll take a Republican if they vote for Obama!

Let's just sum this all up..we all know this is pure jealousy, and Jesse is so envious of Obama, he can't control himself. He is such a hypocrite, going around preaching black unity, while stabbing Obama in the back. Please read this article about Jackson being a deadbeat dad (to his out of wedlock child). Obama hit a nerve!!

Even Jackson is noticing "change"...no pun intended. They tout obama as liberal.pandered to get the liberal vote, the black vote was a given....and just as he pandered at an anti war rally in 2002 in a very liberal area that wouldn't have accepted anything but anti-war...to get re-elected to the state senate in Illinois… the guy lies..don’t you get it. He is as liberal as Joe Lieberman is! He has been playing us all. He got half the liberal vote, by talking anti-war…..... Obama panders…he has all along been more pro-palestine…now he is flip flopping for the jewish vote…claiming to be pro-isreal…all the while he and Michelle.(there are pics)dining with the Said’s a pro-palestine political political couple. He goes whichever way the wind blows..and has nothing really to say, except to give lofty yes we can speeches with no yes I have to go
along with it. ….more likely he won’t ..he flip flopped on some part of the abortion bills, he’s changed his stance on Iraq and Iran…..he is the flim flam man…just watch…he will change like a chameleon before your very eyes.....pretty soon, if you were one of the stooges that did vote for him, you won't even recognize him ; after he's done flip flopping and changing what he's really all about.

Where are you from? You sound like some old person whose been reading too many of these "muslim obama" emails. If you really want to know the truth, check out http://www.snopes.com/. I've had dinner, lunch, and breakfast with Muslims, but I'm still not Muslim. I imagine that could be said of a lot of people.

Get some facts before you post and leave out the hatred and bitterness. We don't need it here.

I think that a lot of white people don't understand how differently the "n" word----as we now call it---is used in the black community. I am black and when I was growing up we used that word constantly. It wasn't disparaging or insulting, but we knew it was different if a white person called us that. Now people can disagree with this all they want to, but the fact of the matter is that Jesse Jackson using that word in casual conversation with another black person is in no way equivalent to Don Imus' rant.

I am also black, and yes I heard the "n" word used a lot when I was growing up. I will not make excuses for Jackson, and NO it's not OK for him to use it privately or publicly. We have come too far!! It's inexcusable for this so-called "reverend" to call anyone (not just Obama) a nig**, and then go as far as saying "he wants to cut his n**ts off!!! This man has preached black unity for years. He is a hyporcrite, and I am ashamed of him. I remember Jesse Jackson in the 70's, growing up on the South Side of Chicago. I admired him and his work in the community, he stood up for blacks. Yes, we all make mistakes and Jesse's words are shameful, I can forgive him, but I will never look at him the same again.

The media is not going to broadcast that Sharpton had something to say about Jackson's comments being out of line. There ratings interest are better served if they can continue to link Jackson and Sharpton together as the so called BLACK COMMUNITY LEADERS. Of course these 2 can't lead there way out of a paper bag. Besides, Sharpton is a quiet Obama supporter. He knows if he comes out publicly the media will vilify Obama about his support as if they they haven't already vilified him about everything else he says or does.
