** UPDATES BELOW: OBAMA STATEMENT, VIDEO **

CNN reports:

The Rev. Jesse Jackson issued an apology to Barack Obama Wednesday for making what he called a "crude and hurtful" remark about the Illinois senator's recent comments directed toward some members of the black community.

According to Jackson, a Fox News microphone picked up comments he meant to deliver privately that seemed to disparage the presumptive Democratic nominee for appearing to lecture the black community on morality.

Jackson didn't elaborate on the context of his remarks, except to say he was trying to explain that Obama was hurting his relationship with black voters by recently conducting "moral" lectures at African-American churches.

Jackson's apology came a few hours before Fox News planned to air the remarks.

Speaking to CNN Wednesday, Jackson said he feels "very distressed" over the comments.

Story continues below
advertisement

"This is a sound bite in a broader conversation about urban policy and racial disparities. I feel very distressed because I'm supportive of this campaign and with the senator, what he has done and is doing," he said. "I said he comes down as speaking down to black people. The moral message must be a much broader message. What we need really is racial justice and urban policy and jobs and health care. That's a range of issues on the menu.

"Then I said something I regret was crude. It was very private. And very much a sound bite," he also said.

More details from Clarence Page on The Swamp:

Well, Swamp fans, as Jackson explained to me by telephone, his remarks occurred during an off-air moment during a Fox New Channel interview that aired Sunday.

Jackson didn't realize that the mics were still "hot," as in turned on and recording when he made a few off-the-cuff remarks about Obama's faith-based programs.

Bill O'Reilly has the story and plans to report it on his Fox program, "The O'Reilly Factor" tonight.

Even though O'Reilly has booked me and another guest to respond to the video, he is withholding a full transcript or recording of Jackson's remarks even from me until the program airs.

So far I have only been told by a producer that Jackson criticizes Obama's proposed faith-based programs for "talking down to black people."

And (A warning here to younger or more sensitive readers) Jackson also says something about how the senator was "going to get his (twin objects of male anatomy) cut off."

Jackson, who recalled his remark as, "The senator is cutting off his you-know-what with black people," expressed deep regrets for saying it, even in what he thought was a "private conversation."

"I want to be clear," Jackson said. "My support for Barack Obama is unequivocal. I apologize to Barack and the Obama campaign for my crude and hurtful comments."

Update: Video of Jesse Jackson's remark:

Jackson apologized for his statement on CNN:

Update: A statement from the Obama campaign: "As someone who grew up without a father in the home, Senator Obama has spoken and written for many years about the issue of parental responsibility, including the importance of fathers participating in their children's lives. He also discusses our responsibility as a society to provide jobs, justice, and opportunity for all. He will continue to speak out about our responsibilities to ourselves and each other, and he of course accepts Reverend Jackson's apology," said Obama campaign spokesman Bill Burton.

And a very harsh statement from Jackson's son, Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr.:

I'm deeply outraged and disappointed in Reverend Jackson's reckless statements about Senator Barack Obama. His divisive and demeaning comments about the presumptive Democratic nominee -- and I believe the next president of the United States -- contradict his inspiring and courageous career.

Instead of tearing others down, Barack Obama wants to build the country up and bring people together so that we can move forward, together -- as one nation. The remarks like those uttered on Fox by Reverend Jackson do not advance the campaign's cause of building a more perfect Union.

Reverend Jackson is my dad and I'll always love him. He should know how hard that I've worked for the last year and a half as a national co-chair of Barack Obama's presidential campaign. So, I thoroughly reject and repudiate his ugly rhetoric. He should keep hope alive and any personal attacks and insults to himself.

The sad thing is in America the races pretend they understand each other and well, kind of like get along with each other. Move to Florida and see first hand what reality is like! This is not the south side of Chicago, believe me!

His statement sums it up pretty well.

Jesse must be fired at once....

isn't it ironic he extorts money from businesses the HE considers to be unfair to minorities yet he uses racial slurs? maybe ironic isn't the right word... more like hypocrite.

As long as "reverend" jesse has issues with obama, obama has my vote. the "reverend" is a race peddler. As soon as obama is elected and it is proven we are not a racist country, ANYONE can be prez, the "reverend's" entire reason for existance is gone.

viva obama!

Wait, let me get this straight....

The man who got all mad about Michael Richard's use of the word, the man who was appealing to TV execs, producers, musicians, rappers... all of the entertainment industry... a year and a half ago to stop using the "n word" because “We want to give our ancestors a present,” Jackson said at a news conference. “Dignity over degradation.” goes and calls his own people that?

Hypocrite.

To be fair, Jesse Jackson was referring to those who use the word in public, and specifically in entertainment.

While he should have known that he was being listened to, since cameras were on him and he was microphoned - he clearly didn't mean for his words to be in the public arena.

Thank you Jesse Jackson for thinking that AA taking responsibility and forging their own destiny is telling them how to behave and talking down to them. I bet you think that AA parents who empasize education are making their children act white.

He is NOT talking down to Black people YOU ARE. What he is doing is being honest what you are doing is treating them like they are stupid.

Im suppose to believe that telling a man who has a child that he doesnt support that he needs to support his child is talking down to them. I wonder what he would think if you tell him to keep it in his pants or USE a Condom. Obama is being easy on them because thats what they need to be told. USE A CONDOM that way you dont have to worry about being responsible for a child and heck you might save your own life in the process. Would that be considered talking down to them.

What an embarassment.

No, the embarrassment is that all are seemingly incapable of thinking out side of the box that defines Black communities as almost being entirely defined by pathological behaviors. One day America will realize its collective stupidity in neglecting its own, making the least capable work the hardest to live. Even as they ease the way for those who need it least. Not very different from medieval times, don't you think?

One either subscribes to this or one does not. Would it be the mark of an enlightened society to
actively engage in some progressive behavior now and then? People who advocate that others be screwed politically the same way or worse as they have. It may very well be too late to stop the juggernaut rolling this way but it can begin with not discussing silly things. It might make more sense to figure why there are so many fatherless children, so much industry gone from these shores, so many prisons. How many American realize that they are competing with prison labor as well as overseas labor and how much chance they have of winning that battle?

How many responsible fathers are stuck in Iraq and Afghanistan?

I think most of us agree that the rich people are given special access. Complaining about humanity being the way it always is gets us no where.

However, when it comes to fatherless children, all the social and economic problems which contribute to this are not as relevant as the act of sexual intercourse. That is an individual choice, controlled by the individuals who engage in it. The high out of wedlock birthrate is the single most damaging factor in the black community. Those children grow up at risk. After several generations of this, families no longer know what they are missing, and accept more out of wedlock births. It isn't a coincidence that the word bastard has dual meanings.

In fact, I think Obama was talking UP to black people by applying the same standards of conduct one would apply to ANY demographic in the nation. It's not derogatory to call out adults of any ethnicity for acting like children. Obama is to be commended for promoting responsible behavior vs. excusing inexcusable behavior on the basis of skin color.

Fact: People really are that dumb. Even career professionals who should know far better from decades of experience.

Case in point: GWB and Dick Cheney referring to a Times reporter as a "total @$$hole" when they were on mike and on camera, they just thought there mikes were off.

So Jesse supports Obama "unequviocally", but he wants to cut his nuts off..? It's fine to disagree, but does Obama really need surrogates who have such obvious anger and contempt for him and his policies? Obama was applauded for calling for better parenting. Some may not like to hear it, but they know in their hearts he has a valid point. Jackson can only thrive if African-Americans view themselves as victims with no power. Well, things have been changing for awhile now. Someone who works hard and takes responsibility for themselves can advance in life, and Obama is shining proof of that. And guess what ? He had an absent father. Can he come off a little arrogant? I guess, but that's preferable to pandering and helping to keep people stuck. Obama has done more for the self-esteem of black people in the last 6 months than Jackson has done in the last 6 years. Yes, Jackson did some good in the 70s and 80s -- keep hope alive and all that -- but hope has turned to action. And Jackson can't stand it. It's right there on the video. Obama should distance himself from him. And from anyone else who offers such blatantly two-faced support.

We "liberals" and "Democrats" have not learned the lesson that we cannot attack our own candidate and ultimately see him elected. Republicans will look straight into the camera, smile and espouse the sincerest "support" of their candidate no matter what he says or does on the campaign trail. Republican candidates can do no wrong--or at least not any wrong that we will hear about from Repug supporters in the public arena. If we could learn to stand steadfast behind our candidate, we Democrats may actually put one in the White House. Any other posture, and we will again taste defeat. Wise up Democrats. This election is just too important to blow. Obama '08 no matter what!!!

Exactly!! I've talked to many McCain supporters who are bitter that Huckabee didn't get the nom but they are still fighting tooth and nail to see a Republican in the White House (again). They're pretty hardcore. Democrats -- as principled as it may be -- will rip apart their own without thinking about the bigger consequence. No candidate is perfectly going to represent each individual!

Democrats, Obama, and ANYBODY BUT McBUSH '08!

The disgrace of the comment covers a multitude of issues: (a) he is a minister and held to a higher standard that the average one of us, such metaphors, such language, such thoughts! (b) despite years of bad publicity and moral morass, many thought better of him; and (c) it just sounds like pettiness because no reasonably intelligent reader/listener could possibly think that discussing facts, known to exist, is "talking down" to anyone.

Jackson is a has-been with a white-knuckle grip on any power he might have had and is losing. Jesse has been a divisive figure and an inappropriate figure. Remember his remark in NY that deep-sixed his bid to become the nominee. Jackson should fade away and go away... time for retirement.
