Mccain And Preorters

John McCain has historically courted and cultivated relationships with reporters of the traveling press corps, so much so that BBC's Katty Kay once referred to the press as McCain's "base." That may be changing, according to a report from Michael Shear of the Washington Post, who observes that McCain's "new press strategy" is to "avoid them":

McCain today held a 10-minute press conference, complete with podium, microphones for the questioners, network-quality audio and a camera for a local television station, which allowed CNN to carry it live.

And where was the national press corps?

Sitting on the runway 27 miles away, having been ferried to McCain's charter plane, totally unaware that a press availability was about to take place until one of the handful of "pool reporters" sent an e-mail alert.

Shear speculates that McCain's shift in his stance toward the press may have something to do with his campaign's recent acquisition: "The new approach may reflect the growing influence of the newly-powerful Steve Schmidt, a top adviser and protege of Bush political guru Karl Rove, who was famous for his desire to control the press's access to his candidate."

But! If you are willing to be a dedicated flack for the McCain campaign, it's a different story entirely. David Corn explains:

During a July 1 McCain campaign call featuring Senator Lindsey Graham and Orson Swindle (who was a Vietnam POW with McCain), only two questions were taken--both from conservative bloggers. The first came from Ed Morrissey, who asked Graham and Swindle, "Can you explain the significance of John McCain's command experience in the Navy...as well as whatever leadership he has shown in the Senate....and can you address...that Barack Obama doesn't have any executive experience at all?" The next query came from Matt Lewis. Referencing retired General Wesley Clark's recent comment that McCain's military service and POW experience did not qualify him to be president, Lewis asked Graham and Swindle if Clark's remark was part of "a concerted effort by the Obama campaign, or can liberals simply not keep themselves from attacking the military?" Then the call was over.

Corn asks: "Had it been merely a coincidence that the only questioners had been rightwing bloggers who had served up soft balls?" Naturally, we have no idea! But that trademarked "straight talk" is becoming a notably scarce commodity.

McCain's entire campaign is completely out of control. With each and every day one can see how disorganized and unstructured this man's Presidency would be.

He continues to say the same things day in and day out, all directly tied to what we've seen over the past 7 years from G.W. Bush.

And keep in mind, McCain voted in lockstep with whatever Bush proposed right at the 95% level.

Obama voted for the Bush spying today.

McCain didn't.

That's reality guys ... all that matters is votes.

Yes, and that is the only ISSUE there is. The economy, health care, energy, etc doesn't matter. That you for that enlightening post. I will certainly vote for McCain now. Thanks again.

McCain hasn't bothered to vote on ANYTHING since April 8, 2008. In fact, he's the most absent senator. The only senator to miss more votes than McCain is Senator Tim Johnson (D-SD), who took several months off while recovering from a brain hemorrhage. That didn't stop McCain from berating Congress for taking a recess over the Fourth of July:

Apparently campaigning for president leaves McCain too tired for things like voting.

That's it, John-Boy. Keep doing stuff like that, right up until November 2008.

The media's finally getting the treatment the rest of us have been getting from the GOP all along...

I now expect to see the press be more critical in their reporting and skeptical about what McCain says. The love the press was showing him was always grounded in the ideal of mutual respect and benefit. They press helped McCain hide his true character traits and in return McCain gave them something to write. There is considerable evidence out there telling us that McCain is not who he pretends to be and now maybe the press will follow some of these leads and help the public to know the real man. Temper. Memory. Deceit. Biases. Predispositions. Independent thinking. Integrity. I see a story begging to be told.

Dream on, they're still gonna cloak all his daggers with maple syrup and tell you they're waffles. The story is begging to be told, but none of them has the nerve to do it I bet.

McSame = Bush

It becomes clearer and clearer with each passing day. I wonder why so many 'pubs bristle at the suggestion that a vote for McSame is a vote for a third Bush term? It's almost as if they weren't proud of George W. Bush and everything he has done. Curious...

And we thought that McSame was in bed with Bush before this! . . . WOW! . . . McSame has now totally morphed into that disgusting Bush! . . . I can't think of a better way for McSame to look like a lame puppet, than to have Bush's handlers pulling his strings.
What a pathetic, DESPERATE poor old man McSame is.

Now that he's freezing out the press can blaming them be far behind?

So..the MSM, who up to this point have lapped up everything he said, bought into the straight talk express and maverick "stuff", are now being shut out by him? Is that becasue he is afraid they will come out of their collective comas?

Let's face it. If I may, to use the line from Midnight Express- "he is a bad machine".

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 03:57 PM on 07/09/2008

I still don't think they will come out of their "collective comas" because they still work for corporate mainstream media and corporate mainstream media wants John McCain as our next President so he can continue Bush's policies in every way. Unless the American people wake up from their "collective comas" we are going to be stuck with at least 4 more years of this nonsense.

Perhaps he's afraid there are some librarians hidden in amongst the press corps...

So the Republican candidate for president is going to boycott the press. Wonder how many votes that will get him?

My guess is it shows up in the polls within a couple of days, seeing as a good portion of McCane's supporters are the "to helI with integrity, I want a comfy plane seat" members of the press corps (representing all but a couple of the MSM)

So, Obama avoids the press? You must be joking, right?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 04:13 PM on 07/09/2008

The media is in the tank for Mcbush. It's the reality.
Always they give a free pass for him and his positions.

Look MSNBC, now except Countdown, every show is against Obama.

The Morning joe with his former republicans, Todd(his wife works for mccain), Mitchell the angry clinton supporter and others.

The Sunday shows are absolutely disgusting against Obama with the panel only against him. Look ABC with the stupid Stephanopupulus and Meet the press now is absolutely ridiculous without Russert.

Perhaps the new strategy of the McCain campaign will finally treat these folks like the lap dogs they have long been anyway.

Finally, McCain has done something I like.

Wonder how long it will take for the MSM to realize how foolish they now look...

I'm only watching Countdown right now because of the 24/7 constant negative press about Obama. I have to give it to the MSM, when they want us to do something (like vote for McCain) they work really hard at it.
