Mccain And Preorters

John McCain has historically courted and cultivated relationships with reporters of the traveling press corps, so much so that BBC's Katty Kay once referred to the press as McCain's "base." That may be changing, according to a report from Michael Shear of the Washington Post, who observes that McCain's "new press strategy" is to "avoid them":

McCain today held a 10-minute press conference, complete with podium, microphones for the questioners, network-quality audio and a camera for a local television station, which allowed CNN to carry it live.

And where was the national press corps?

Sitting on the runway 27 miles away, having been ferried to McCain's charter plane, totally unaware that a press availability was about to take place until one of the handful of "pool reporters" sent an e-mail alert.

Shear speculates that McCain's shift in his stance toward the press may have something to do with his campaign's recent acquisition: "The new approach may reflect the growing influence of the newly-powerful Steve Schmidt, a top adviser and protege of Bush political guru Karl Rove, who was famous for his desire to control the press's access to his candidate."

But! If you are willing to be a dedicated flack for the McCain campaign, it's a different story entirely. David Corn explains:

During a July 1 McCain campaign call featuring Senator Lindsey Graham and Orson Swindle (who was a Vietnam POW with McCain), only two questions were taken--both from conservative bloggers. The first came from Ed Morrissey, who asked Graham and Swindle, "Can you explain the significance of John McCain's command experience in the Navy...as well as whatever leadership he has shown in the Senate....and can you address...that Barack Obama doesn't have any executive experience at all?" The next query came from Matt Lewis. Referencing retired General Wesley Clark's recent comment that McCain's military service and POW experience did not qualify him to be president, Lewis asked Graham and Swindle if Clark's remark was part of "a concerted effort by the Obama campaign, or can liberals simply not keep themselves from attacking the military?" Then the call was over.

Corn asks: "Had it been merely a coincidence that the only questioners had been rightwing bloggers who had served up soft balls?" Naturally, we have no idea! But that trademarked "straight talk" is becoming a notably scarce commodity.

Meanwhile, what's up with the photo of him with the photographer shooting upward? Is that to try to make him look taller than he is? Why is he embarrassed that he is only 5'6"? Is he lying about his height? Seriously, how many less inches does he have to be to be chucked around in a bowling alley?

well I'm not a supporter of McCain but I can understand him avoiding the press. Most now a days are a bunch of hacks who always seem to spin or f-up the facts. maybe if they did their job right people would not try to avoid them.

Where is the press on opening ALL his military records? OPEN THE DAMN MILITARY RECORDS !! Where is the press on his 101 flip flops? Begala said it best: He would win the gold medal for flip flops even at his age !!

Remember when St. Ronnie Regan had to keep 3x5 cards so he could remember the subject he was supposed to be talking about.....kind of like a Hollywood script?

This old coot can't even remember what he said in the last five minutes, so they are protecting him by only having soft ball questions from right wing nuts....a la...Bush. Stands to reason since he is Bush 3.
Why would the press want to even listen to his "crooked talk express" ?

He is truly pathetic and he can't win this presidency or will are all in a big heap of trouble !! Bomb, Bomb Iran, stay in Iraq 100 years..kill more kids...maim more kids all for OIL !!!

How bout some straight talk express on that military record? You know, the one where only 17 out of 600 pages were released. Yet, every ad shows him in his military service, but won't talk about it.
How bout changing the name of his campaign to the double talk express?
Also, how does one get into flight school when you are 894 out of 899 in your military calss? Hmmmmmmmmm....

I don't know why McCain is afraid of the press. It's not like they've been holding Republicons accountable for the past 7+ years anyway....

Well... Yeah !

Could this development be due to the fact that virtually EVERYTHING that comes out of The Man's mouth is either a gaffe, faux - pas, reversed from an earlier statement, or just plain incorrect ??

' Straight Talk Express ' indeed !

( Why is absolutely EVERYTHING that the Rethugs supposedly stand for, EXACTLY the opposite ?? )

More to follow. -ralph

I think this is a two way street -- he avoids them and they avoid him. That way the MSM can keep the Retards in office for 8 more miserable years.

John McCain was on the Morning Joe Show at MSNBC yesterday and took questions from Joe, Pat and Andrea, he was very good at answering all the questions, maybe you should go to the MSNBC website and watch it. This is something Obama would NEVER DO because he usually doesn't know what he's talking about and he talks way too slow and says "uh" far too often. The Obama supporters only like "Big Speech" Obama when he's reading that teleprompter, but without the teleprompter he looks like a different person.

In case you haven't noticed, there's more than a bit of an anti-Obama bias on the part of Joe, Pat and Andrea. Back when Hillary was still in the race, Joe did everything but peel grapes and pop them into her mouth! I didn't see the interview on Morning Joe, but I can imagine they let McCain off a lot easier than John Roberts did on CNN! If Hillary was the presumptive nominee, they'd be more likely to go harder on McCain.
As for Senator Obama's hesitations ("uh") while speaking off-the-cuff, it just tells me that he's putting a lot of thought into what he's saying. You can bet his answers to tough questions aren't McCain's stock "[double talk, double talk] ...and I've done a lot of Town Hall Meetings."

I've been watching Joe, Andrea and Pat for several years now, all Republican backers, -- so I don't need to go watch them give some stupid interview now. I already know their agenda and if you don't, you must be new to the "game."

Obama knows very well what he is talking about and the fact that he in your opinion talks too slow is in my opinion a sign that he understands the favorite pass time of the media in distorting his words so he is choosing them carefully. McCain should try choosing his words carefully sometime. As for Obama not appearing on MSNBC, to talk to Joe, Pat and Andrea, do you really think they want an honest interview with him, no and what ever he would say would be immediately rearranged by Joe, Andrea and Pat.

This must be his "presidential pose". He looks more like Charlie Chaplin every day. He liked much younger women, also. Cindy keeps trying to look like she is still 25 years old. All the cosmetic surgery does not help, dear. You will wake up tomorrow and STILL be married to the old fart.
