Aides to Sen. John McCain sought on Wednesday to clear up their boss' position on Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki's recent insistence that a timetable for the withdrawal of U.S. troops be included in any security agreement between the two countries.

"John McCain has always been clear that American forces operate in Iraq only with the consent of that country's democratically elected government," Michael Goldfarb, a McCain spokesman, told the Huffington Post. "The Senator speaks frequently with Iraq's leaders and they have made clear that they share his belief that any timeline for withdrawal must be dictated by the facts on the ground. He met with the foreign minister and President separately within the last month...He met with Maliki on his last trip to Iraq sometime in late March."

Goldfarb's remarks represent a more pronounced effort to bring McCain's position on Iraq in line with Maliki's. McCain has forsworn deadlines for troop withdrawal -- insisting that it be tied to conditions on the ground -- and he did not, initially, express support the prime minister's position.

"Prime Minister Maliki is the leader of a country and I'm confident he will act as the President and the Foreign Minister both told me in the last several days," said the presumptive Republican nominee. "It will be directly related to the situation on the ground -- just as they have always said. And since we are succeeding, I am convinced, as I have said before, we will withdraw with honor, not according to a set timetable."

On Wednesday, aides to the Senator continued to argue that Maliki's statement was public posturing designed to improve his hand during the negotiations of a status of forces agreement.

McCain's allies also were forced to make concessions today in rationalizing how the U.S. could keep troops in Iraq against that country's wishes. Peter Hegseth, the head of the non-partisan Vets For Freedom (an advocacy group that supports McCain's Iraq War plan), acknowledged during a conference on Wednesday that the next president would ultimately have to listen to Maliki's directives.

"I think the Iraqi prime minister's prerogative is obviously important," he said. "They are a sovereign country. Their wishes, I think, are going to be granted by our government. And we've created an opportunity for them to make these kinds of statements and I think that is a good thing."

Critics of the war have jumped on Maliki's remark as evidence that criticism of Obama's Iraq policy (which calls for a responsible drawdown of U.S. troops) is entirely unfounded. They noted that Iraq's National Security Adviser Mowaffaq al-Rubaie restated his government's desire to see a decrease in U.S. presence, on Tuesday. And pointed to a 2004 remark given by John McCain in front of the Council of Foreign Relations, in which the Senator said the U.S. "would have to leave," if the Iraqi government asked it to.

Psssst, here's another thing this administration and McClone don't want the American people to know. The reason the surge appears to be working in Iraq is because al Quaeda has refocused their efforts on Afghanistan which the MSM isn't covering, Surprise! Surprise!

And because we are paying the Iraqi's and insurgents hard cash not to attack Americans. I really resent my tax dollars being spent like that.

I am not even sure why McClone and the MSM think whether or not we should leave Iraq is up for discussion. 80% of Americans want to get out of Iraq. End of discussion.

And 90% of the Iraqi people want us out. . .but what do we care about them and all this sovereign nation stuff? They dont seem to matter when death tolls (as in Death Tolls are Down) are mentioned, either.

Don't forget the 67% of Iraqi's that want us out. Mc'Same is parsing his words. He keeps referring to "conditions on the ground". The Iraqi's are not saying the same thing.

Occasionally Chris Matthews gets it right. He got it right the other night when he eviscerated one of the vets association guys who was doing the same, saying "conditions on the ground". Chris firmly pointed out that Mc'Same's comment in 2005 said nothing about "conditions on the ground".

Well by Gosh and Golly, LET'S GET THEM OUT OF THERE.

The war has been won. This is politics now.

Get our brave young people home and back doing what they need to do: NATIONAL security - not CORPORATE INTEREST security.

I think the coordinated conservative attack on Obama is falling apart.

I have no idea what McCain is talking about on Iraq, however. Not that it matters. The last five days had little or nothing to do with Iraq.

I guess that the American people telling their own government to get out of Iraq doesn't count.

Indeed. As Cheney said, "so?"

Spin Baby Spin

I always wonder what "withdrawal must be dictated by the facts on the ground" means exactly.

Its one of the vague qualifiers that seems to essentially mean, "I reserve the right to waffle and equivocate for any reason I see fit."

wow! It took a day for the Mac Camp to re watch the video of Mac telling what he thought about withdrawel before he thought about it recently. Funny as it seems there is two mccains, one from 4 years ago and the now one who forgets what the other one said. The clean up crew had to realize video exists about Mac and his past statements. Why are they letting him go out and say stuff againest what was said before? They must have internet access to google the past speaches? He just comes out looking more dumb than usual for all the cable news that does do the comparison to the past. They must find the videos somewhere so Mac's clean up guys should do their work before his next speech.

I'm only posting this as a reply because it wouldn't let me post my own........I just thought it was patently absurd that McCain says "we will leave with honor." Any "honor" that the US had regarding this whole f@c$ up was tossed out the window when we first invaded. What a joke. An old, wrinkly, out of touch joke.

The McClone of 2000 and 2004 wouldn't even vote for the McClone of 2008.

This is a line of crap. McBush has continually stated that we should remain their as we did in Germany, Japan, and Korea. Dont's believe this from the Republicans. They started this war for oil, and they won't leave without a fight. They just don not have the guts to admit it.

Doesn't matter what Sen. Mc Loser says today - he'll flip flop and change his mind again tomorrow, and most likely again by the end of the week. And then again in another week.

Mc Loser has no idea what his stance is any more than we do.

McCain is a dummy...and since when does the US military receive orders from an Iraqi PM? Oil is the only reason McCain & Bush are so dedicated to Iraq while neglecting Afghanistan, Pakistan, & Al Qaeda (the one that attacked us, & not the one that we propped up to fight us in Iraq).

They sicken me with their primitive minds & ancient understanding of how the world works.

Two sides of the McCain campaign don't know what the other is doing. This is their day-late, dollar short method of trying to capitalize on Mailki's statements to create the illusion that McCain will bring troops home.

Of course, McCain just diminished Maliki's significance by saying "he's a politician" (What the hell is McCain?) and that we'll base our decisions on conditions... In other words, Maliki isn't any more important to the US than his predecessors were, except he's no longer the useful idiot he used to be, and we'll do exactly what the hell we want to, getting Iraqi approval is just shiny packaging.

my Senator once again doing his job of representing me... not! At least in this case not voting represents me better than voting contrary to my wishes...
