Major donors to Barack Obama's campaign were told Wednesday evening that fundraising efforts were "a little slow" and that they should help retire Hillary Clinton's campaign debt so that the New York Democrat's supporters would, in turn, give to Obama.

"There was no negativity about Hillary," said one Democrat. "In fact the opposite. Fundraising is a little slow and it is very important to ramp it up. Hillary donors are a major source of donor dollars. The message to the troops was 'Get your five checks for Hillary in so that you can ask her donors to give to Barack.'"

The campaign finance team call was made as Clinton and Obama appeared together in New York for a joint fundraiser.

It also came on the heels of a New York Times report that top Obama donors have resisted helping retire the Clinton campaign's debt. The story was downplayed by Clinton confidante Terry McAuliffe, who said on MSNBC that hard feelings between the camps amounted to just a "couple people."

"The idea that the New York Times is going to do another story whacking Hillary Clinton, this is news?" he asked. "Of course not."

But tensions were apparently high enough that the Obama campaign felt the need to address them. In a separate interview, a major Clinton fundraiser said a small number of her compatriots continue to feel upset about their diminished status.

"For better or worse, the Clinton people are used to being courted, and the Obama folks have just a different philosophy," said the donor. "Some of the Clinton people have gotten demanding. Some of them wanted titles, and I think that is totally inappropriate. Why should any Clinton person get to jump ahead of any Obama folks? They want jobs, they want recognition, they want to be in the paper. They want to be considered for an ambassadorship. It is all about ego."

The one-time Clinton backer added: "I happen to think the Obama folks are right. Politicians should not have to spend so much time pandering to the bundlers or donors. But if you are used to that kind of treatment, one might misinterpret that as not caring about their needs."

Story continues below

The remarks echo many of the sentiments expressed by Clinton donors in the Times story, which reported that Obama supporters have forked over a paltry $100,000 (with more in pledges) so far to Clinton's debt.

But not everyone is so concerned about relations between the two groups. One fundraiser for Obama told the Huffington Post that "the integration of national fundraising teams" always has some turbulence, but that, contrary to press reports, the current friction was "a tempest in a thimble."

"When you move to a new town you learn the culture and the cadence," he said. "There are meetings happening all the time. I have a meeting tonight in my region. We are working to get all the Hillstars involved."

Another donor said she fully expects the issue to be resolved in time with the majority Clinton backers falling in line.

And yet, in interviews with four separate fundraisers (for both Obama and Clinton) there was no shortage of explanations provided for why animosity between the two camps still exists. One individual claimed that the Obama campaign was simply not putting pressure on his donors to help Clinton with her debt.

"They don't feel any penalty for not doing it," she said. "And they won't donate to her if there isn't an incentive to do so."

Another individual stressed that the fact that much of the money would be going to the pockets of Mark Penn -- and that Penn had recently teamed up with former Bush adviser Karen Hughes -- was stymieing donations.

Hilliary was bragging about her 18 million supporters . . . if each one gave her a dollar, her troubles would be over. The reason those poeple are not sending her a dollar is because . . . . a huge part
of those "supporters" were Republicans wanting her to be the "easily beatable nominee".

JennyJay, this is my sentiment exactly. The Clinton's are in the process of 'gleaning' America. None of this 'debt' would have occured if they had not been pandering to the racists of this country.

Anyone else notice, that Obama was not having problems, until he brought the Clinton's to his table... They are destroying his campaign, his program, and his presentation, not to mention the gray hair he's sprouting.

Russ Feingold is not too worried about it. It can all be changed when we rule.

Calm down.

Is Hillary more important than America?

The 220, 000 to Obama and more to each of McCain and Hillary (would she have voted against the bill if she was the nominee?) is in the video which clearly explains why the FISA bill passed so easily. They are all on the take except a few.

Maybe you can find out how politics works, and stop embarrassing yourself.

There are people alive today that smoked pot legally. Laws change.

Yup, there is something going on behind the scenes that has yet to come out to us. Both sides are withholding funds to the other. It doesn't take a genius to figure out that something big is being battled that the average person doesn't know about.

Obama and his Clinton-loyalist infused campaign should be VERY cautious about encouraging Obama donors to help retire Clinton's debt. Contirbutons to Hillary only help Hillary. Enough of the Clintons.

Obama will be fine.

Even if a smattering of Hillary Clinton's supporters don't want to support Obama, Obama will win because his fortunes don't hinge on snaging the full support of her followers.

In the end, he'll be the president, and people will forget about Hillary Clinton.

In case you had trouble reading this, it is about the big donors of the campaigns, not the average voter.

That aside you keep telling yourself that it doesn't matter, let me know how that works out for you. Sorry but Hillary Clinton is here stay in some form or fashion.

Most of her 18 million said they wouldn't vote for her given another chance. Why are we surprised no one wants to pay off her debt?

his fundraising sucks because he's selling us out by his "move to the center" . he capitulated to the traitor bush on fisa and he's doing the same on abortion rights. why should we donate to "obama lite"?

To say the least about the your kids should learn spanish speech as well. That just pissed off tons of people. There is a big donor fight about something we don't know about, yet.

"Spanish speech?" Translation please. Seems to me you could use a bit of tutoring in "English speech." More Faux News talking points. During his townhall the other day he was asked by a woman why Americans kids are so lacking in foreign language skills, in light of the global economy. He echoed her concerns. Using Spanish as an example, he stated that in order to compete in this global economy Americans need to start early on in their academic lives, grade school, learning another language, LIKE THE REST OF THE WORLD! My parents are both emigrants, from Norway and Sweden; my husband came here at age 6 from Japan. They ALL came to this country equipped with basic English language skills, taught to them in school from an early age. Americans on the other hand are incapable of even ordering a cup of coffee in a restaurant while vacationing abroad, assuming arrogantly, that of course EVERYONE speaks English. Oh btw, O also says that it is imperative for Hispanics and Latinos to learn English!

What I want Hillary to do is set up a website for all the non-millionaires who helped her with her campaign. I'll help retire that debt. But until then, I am not contributing a dime. Mark Penn is a dimwit who was constantly putting his own interests above the best interests of the campaign. And he's still doing it, teaming up with an ex Bush aide. Yeah, I can tell he is really hurting for money. Thanks, but no thanks. I'll save my $5.00 for the gas tank.

Well 0bama has already indicated he doesnt need or care about his small donors who support the Constitution. He can always go to the telecoms. They have lots of money, as evidenced by todays vote to kill the 4th Amendment.

Good luck Barack.

He voted three times to remove the immunity provisions today, so it's hardly reciprocity. Caved, maybe, but you can't see anything sinister in his motivations. Given the choice of leaving the Protect America Act in place or removing it and allowing telecom immunity, he sided with the latter. A failure, but nothing evil.

Yeah but then he voted for cloture, which he vowed to not do, and then voted for the bill, which he vowed not to do if it contained immunity. Hes a coward and a liar in my book, and hell never see another dime or minute from me.

I don't give a flying FIG about Clinton, OR her self-indulgent debt! She can fade away and swim in all she owes for all I care. I've contributed twice to Obama's campaign, and my dollars aren't going to some erudite snob who insulted, slammed, and outright LIED about Barack throughout her campaign. I can't stand her. Not a frickin' penny will she get from me or mine.
