BERLIN — German Chancellor Angela Merkel has signaled unease over the prospect of a possible speech by Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama at Berlin's historic Brandenburg Gate, a spokesman said Wednesday.

Merkel has "only limited understanding for using the Brandenburg Gate as an election campaign backdrop, as it were, and has expressed skepticism about pursuing such plans," Thomas Steg, a spokesman for the chancellor, told reporters.

However, Steg stressed that the chancellor is "very happy" for Obama to visit Germany and meet her and Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier.

Berlin city officials said this week that members of the Democratic candidate's campaign had contacted them about what permission and security issues would need to be resolved before Obama could speak in front of the monument.

The Obama campaign has refused to provide specifics on his plans during an upcoming visit to Europe and the Middle East, including the candidate's interest in a possible event at the Brandenburg Gate.

"Senator Obama looks forward to his visit to Germany and his opportunity to meet with the chancellor," Obama spokesman Bill Burton said. "He has considered several sites for a possible speech, and he will choose one that makes most sense for him and his German hosts."

The gate stood for 28 years behind the Berlin Wall in communist East Germany's heavily fortified border zone. Probably the capital's best-known monument, it was once a symbol of Germany's Cold War division and now stands for its reunification.

Steg noted that the Brandenburg Gate has become "a place with a particular exclusivity, intensity and symbolism" in view of past speeches by sitting U.S. presidents and events such as a large rally in solidarity with the United States after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.

As a result, he said Merkel has voiced "great skepticism as to whether it is appropriate to bring an election campaign being fought not in Germany but in the United States to the Brandenburg Gate."

Steg said that "no German (chancellor) candidate would think of using (Washington's) National Mall or Red Square in Moscow for rallies, because it would be considered inappropriate."

He stressed that giving permission to use the venue is a matter not for Merkel's government, but for Berlin city authorities. Berlin Mayor Klaus Wowereit said Tuesday that he would be "delighted" for Obama to appear at the Brandenburg Gate or elsewhere.

In a famous 1987 speech that used the gate as a backdrop, President Reagan urged Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev to "open this gate" and "tear down this wall."

In 1994, four years after German reunification, President Clinton spoke on the other, formerly eastern, side of the gate _ declaring that "Berlin is free."

Organizers of Obama's campaign have said he is planning two foreign trips this summer, including stops in the Middle East and major European capitals, in an effort to boost his foreign policy credentials as he prepares for the November election against Republican John McCain.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Jens Ploetner said there had been contacts with the German Embassy in Washington regarding Obama's trip. He said that, while German officials suggested that he could visit landmarks such as Berlin's Holocaust Memorial, the Cold War-era Checkpoint Charlie border crossing and the Brandenburg Gate, they had made no recommendations on any venue for a possible Obama speech.

Settle down, Chancellor. Obama isn't planning to nationalize Germany. It's a speech not an invasion. Feel free to come to America and use the Big Hole in NYC where the towers used to be as a backdrop for a speech about why the world has nothing to fear from a failing democracy like the United States.

You know, if Merkel or Brown or Sorkozy wanted to come visit Texas while they were running for office and they wanted to give essentially a campaign speech in front of the Alamo, I don't think I'd be enthusiastic about that. Now, if they wanted to rent the AlamoDome and do so, why go right ahead. I really think that Mr. Obama is sending the wrong message by wanting to speak where only US Presidents have spoken in the past. Say, isn't there a parable about the guy who doesn't choose to sit at the head of the table in that Good Book that is the basis for his Christianity?

ScandalousCandice

Yes, the world loves Obama, but some powerful people do not like Obama. That is why it was pertinent to make this trip as part of his campaign. Most Europeans do not agree with Obama's view on FISA, faithbased politics, etc. Nov. is only new months away and when Obama will be the president of the United States, the world will receive him well.

let him stay home and win the presidency.

What you just said is all the more reason he should go there and give a speech. We need the world back on our side and our image and relations on good standings. The original and true message of the gate is an excellent place for it.

Most Europeans could give a sh... about FISA. They have their concerns I am sure but the war in Iraq, and the possible wars with Iran are more pressing matters for the Europeans. Our weak economy due to the wars are causing some instability in their markets.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 02:47 PM on 07/09/2008

That's true. Europeans don't even know, what FISA is. And if you would explain it to them, they would tell you that's the way they have assumed it works anyway.

Candice, your point is well taken. Stay home and win the presidency before throwing his weight around overseas. Obama, to me, is sending the wrong message about many things right now. His plans for his nomination acceptance speech are ridiculous - he is not a rock star, he is just a candidate for president at this point. I am a Hillary supporter and was ready to go over to Baracks side at her request, but right now honestly don't have the stomach for it. It appears his ego has become larger than his campaign pledges,

The Brandenburg Gate ploy is as lame as the presidential seal ploy. He should forget it right now! For the record I am an Obama supporter.

HuffPo, I don't usually criticize this site. I love it to death. But I have to say that some of your headlines - this one included - is really starting to take the cake. "Ire" is a work that evokes something even stronger than anger, and even implies that the person experiencing ire dislikes the subject that has caused that ire.

Look. I understand you're pressed for space. But I think you need a refresher course in grammar. Maybe you could read Sin and Syntax, a pretty excellent book that does a great job showing you just how you could've avoided this kind of headline. Off the bat, here's a couple:

German Chancellor "Uneasy" Over Obama Speech Locale

Potential Obama Speech Could Cause German Gaffe

--Seriously. The one about his kids made me think that something horrible had happened during the interview. You had one a while ago that talked about alien video footage released, when really, it was about a guy saying he might release it to some journalists.

Try a bit harder to be on the mark, otherwise, you just become another unreliable news source, or at least appear to be one.

Merkel knows a million Germans will come out to see Obama speak and she's very uncomfortable that it will offend the Republican administration in Washington. The City of Berlin will give the permission and it will go ahead. End of story.

Obama represents a clean break from the American foreign policy arrogance that has cost thousands of lives in Iraq and all those millions who marched in Europe before Bush invaded deserve to hear him speak. They will be there.

Why is she getting her panties in a bunch over the Brandenburg Gate? First of all it is true that it was used as a part of the wall. But what the gate was originally built as a symbol of peace in 1791. The twisted meanings that dictators have placed on this symbol are one thing, but now is the time to remind everyone what this symbol was originally about. Bill Clinton had a rally there and spoke about post cold war Europe.

She needs to get over it. The world loves Obama and they want to see him. The Brandenburg Gate is a classic symbol of peace. When I first heard he wanted to do that, I thought it was an excellent idea. I have personally been to the gate and it's beautiful. The German people are anxious to move on from their sinister past. And bringing a message of hope like that is a good idea.

IF I had three wishes and they could come true # 1 would be to take my Afro-American people and get out of American. #2 I would never want to know
that people like Sean H, and his racist buddies exist. #3 I would build a high
fence to make sure that Sean H and his racist buddies could not come near us.

Instead of taking your people out of America think about this. Stay and we become allies. Sean H is an idiot. If you watch his show you will notice he takes the same line as his guest. He can say one thing and within 30 seconds make a 180. Look for his exchange with John Bolton. Bush one a victory, 30 seconds later North Korea won a victory. Bolton led him by the nose as is always the case with this fool.
This is how Sean H makes his money. It's all he knows and he's not very good at it.

Hey, Edwarvir. I'm "Afro-American" and while I can appreciate the sentiment, I don't want to go. Here's why:

My family suffered here, died here, slaved here. They helped build this country, and they bled for it. Maybe way down my family line there was someone who was brought here against his/her will, but once they were here, they became a part of the bloodline of this country.

I pay my taxes, I follow the laws, and I vote. I'm a good citizen, born out of other good citizens, born out of people who worked just as hard or harder than anyone else to make this country what it is today.

I belong here.

This country is MINE.

I don't want to leave it. No one can make me leave. And occasionally some a-hole tries to suggest that I should "get out" as if he or she has more claim to it than I do, but screw that. MAKE me. You can't tell me to get out of a place where I am part-owner.

And I am allowed to criticize this country as much as I freaking want to. I'm allowed to be as proud or not proud as I want to. I can say or feel whatever I want to about this country because it's mine, and I have every right to.

Don't let people like Sean H. make you give up what rightfully belongs to you.

Well, I actually agree with Merkel here. Obama is billing this trip as a way of getting to know foreign leaders, getting some feedback about foreign policy, etc. He's not president yet and using this site in order to have some sort of campaign rally is inappropriate. It feeds into the Republican line that he is a national security lightweight who is better at making speeches to adoring crowds rather than at being experienced and informed about foreign affairs. I support him, but his campaign would be better off with a lot of photos of the Senator having serious meetings with world leaders, the majority of whom are just dying to see the age of strategically ineffective cowboy diplomacy end.
