BERLIN — German Chancellor Angela Merkel has signaled unease over the prospect of a possible speech by Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama at Berlin's historic Brandenburg Gate, a spokesman said Wednesday.

Merkel has "only limited understanding for using the Brandenburg Gate as an election campaign backdrop, as it were, and has expressed skepticism about pursuing such plans," Thomas Steg, a spokesman for the chancellor, told reporters.

However, Steg stressed that the chancellor is "very happy" for Obama to visit Germany and meet her and Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier.

Berlin city officials said this week that members of the Democratic candidate's campaign had contacted them about what permission and security issues would need to be resolved before Obama could speak in front of the monument.

The Obama campaign has refused to provide specifics on his plans during an upcoming visit to Europe and the Middle East, including the candidate's interest in a possible event at the Brandenburg Gate.

"Senator Obama looks forward to his visit to Germany and his opportunity to meet with the chancellor," Obama spokesman Bill Burton said. "He has considered several sites for a possible speech, and he will choose one that makes most sense for him and his German hosts."

The gate stood for 28 years behind the Berlin Wall in communist East Germany's heavily fortified border zone. Probably the capital's best-known monument, it was once a symbol of Germany's Cold War division and now stands for its reunification.

Steg noted that the Brandenburg Gate has become "a place with a particular exclusivity, intensity and symbolism" in view of past speeches by sitting U.S. presidents and events such as a large rally in solidarity with the United States after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.

As a result, he said Merkel has voiced "great skepticism as to whether it is appropriate to bring an election campaign being fought not in Germany but in the United States to the Brandenburg Gate."

Steg said that "no German (chancellor) candidate would think of using (Washington's) National Mall or Red Square in Moscow for rallies, because it would be considered inappropriate."

He stressed that giving permission to use the venue is a matter not for Merkel's government, but for Berlin city authorities. Berlin Mayor Klaus Wowereit said Tuesday that he would be "delighted" for Obama to appear at the Brandenburg Gate or elsewhere.

In a famous 1987 speech that used the gate as a backdrop, President Reagan urged Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev to "open this gate" and "tear down this wall."

In 1994, four years after German reunification, President Clinton spoke on the other, formerly eastern, side of the gate _ declaring that "Berlin is free."

Organizers of Obama's campaign have said he is planning two foreign trips this summer, including stops in the Middle East and major European capitals, in an effort to boost his foreign policy credentials as he prepares for the November election against Republican John McCain.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Jens Ploetner said there had been contacts with the German Embassy in Washington regarding Obama's trip. He said that, while German officials suggested that he could visit landmarks such as Berlin's Holocaust Memorial, the Cold War-era Checkpoint Charlie border crossing and the Brandenburg Gate, they had made no recommendations on any venue for a possible Obama speech.

You have to come back and check every hour here at Huff Po for the "changing of the headline," i.e. not getting enough views. So, now it's "Obama's German Problem?" LOL What would it be without a "Barack's problem du jour" meme by the MSM.

Why attacking Huffpost? Because it reported what looks very big rebuke for sen. Obama? I am not a paid PR butI could tell from the moment Obama's trip to Eyurope was announced that this trip was a bad idea. His handlers have failed to see the traditional protocols between being a candidate for and being the President of the United States. second, they have failed to take him to friendls places such as UK, Ireland, etc rather than neocons lands of France and Germany. Obama has no one to blame but his PR people and his inability so suppress his desire to taste the pleasures that comes with being the president of the United States until winning the election!

Angela Merkel would have never made this comment if Barack Obama was the president of the United States and this comment is drawing negative press Obama does not need. Obama needs to hire people with global vision behind Chicago. He needs experts who can see pitfalls before they become problem for his candidacy.

Perhaps sarahjan should apply for a job you, it's a wonder he's managed without your advice. If you knew a bit of history you would know that it is common that leaders from all countries who are running for the leader role in their countries most always visit countries abroad and are treated as if 'THEY were already that countries leader.

Was Angela Merkel put in power by Haim Saban? He owned Germany's largest television network I believe in the run up to the German elections that ousted Gerhard Schroeder.
Has anyone noticed the media isn't a "free press" anymore...?

What does that have to do with the fact that O, who's not even the nominee yet, tried to use a this symbolic site that only respected sitting presidents have spoken at, to make a petty campaign speech?

Because the symbol of the Gate is peace despite what past dictators used it for. And the world wants peace and Obama offers that. Ask the people of Germany what they think and they will agree that Obama is their guy. And using the Gate is an awesome place for that kind of rally. Unless you have been there or been to Germany, then you don't know what they eff you are talking about. You are just an useless hater at this point.

HuffPo - what is with the histrionic titles? Seriously, a little editorial restraint is needed here. You're fast becoming just another hyperventilating voice in the din, instead of a liberal oasis of reason. Chill.

How is that offensive? She is being uptight. Ask the people of Germany what they think.

Perhaps my earlier comment didn't appear because of a technical glitch, since as far as I can tell there wasn't anything verboten in it. So I'll try to reconstruct it.

The purpose of Obama's appearance is to stage an "Ich bin ein Berliner" moment. Perhaps he'll bring along Caroline to underscore the parallel, since younger Obama supporters won't get it.

You can believe that the corporate media will, though; they just LOVE these ersatz Symbolic Moments. Remember the frenzy at HuffPo and elsewhere when Caroline came out in support of Obama? Someone, don't remember who, rhapsodized at the news that JFK's "ONLY LIVING BLOOD descendant" had anointed Obama.

OK, here goes-- second time's a charm!

So is Obama---I( just read something in the Times of London about how, just hours after he gave that family interview that is out on video, he regretted it and wished he hadn't done it. Doesn't he think things through?

Whatever else Obama exhibitis, he has no shortage of bad taste. From the mock presidential seal, to proclaiming his "victory" (by a hair's breadth, if that), exhibiting small children on TV, and now coopting a site which is for one of our allies sacred. Imagine a German candidate proclaiming he or she would come to the US and, uninvited, make a speech at the Lincoln Memorial.

Please the gate has been used by Bill Clinton for a rally. The gate was built as a symbol of peace. The chancelor reminding everyone of Germany's sinister past when it's people care only to move on, is what is in poor taste.

"Imagine a German candidate proclaiming he or she would come to the US and, uninvited, make a speech at the Lincoln Memorial."

First off they "asked for permission. And I do recall the now current French President and Gordon Brown from England visiting here BEFORE they were elected and were given all the same pomp and pageantry from Bush. It very common for people in McCain and Obama's situation to be treated in this manner around the world at this point, because one or the other will be the next president.

Note the "possible" part?

Whether or not you like it, he's probably going to become Prez. And not just any Prez, a pretty historical one, for a variety of reasons, in a country that sorely needs a lot of things, including the good will of the rest of the world.

Behaving in a Presidential manner is fine, and EVERY candidate does it, he's not just randomly delusional.

Fine something real to criticize him about.

I started reading HuffPost as an alternative to the major media sources that seemed to specialize in hyping up stories, especially the Murdock sources. But I'm getting tired of reading headlines in HuffPost that exaggerate the real point of the story. Does the body of this story really reflect that Merkel is experiencing "ire" about the speech or just unease? It really isn't the speech "plan' but the site.

It's time for HuffPost to start toning down these tabloid headlines about both of the candidates.

Obama speaking at the Brandenburg Gate BEFORE he is even the official nominee is so arrogant I can't even wrap my mind around it.

My god, Reagan and JFK were both president when they spoke - what are they thinking?!

This is the same Angela, Bush was accused of groping back when? I think since Bush and ANgela just had that bg meal at the G8 then we must not take her thoughts seriously.... Obama should visit Iraq but the rest of the tour should wait until later. He should pick a VP with experience and let the tour go. It looks like he is trying to play make up when he should not to make the GOP have more ammo.

You're comparing apples to oranges. As our political structures are completely different you can't compare our political parties one to one but only in relation to the parties they are surrounded by.

Merkel is to the x as Obama is to the left.

Yeah. Its really funny when somebody else put him in the league of a german social democrat.
A german social democrat would join the Communist party of the USA if he were to live in there.
I dont like Merkel for her politics but i definitely like her for treating the US as an ally and a friend again. Blame it all on Bush never worked for me, because i was live witness to see how my old chancellor Schroeder was stirring up hate and resentment.
She deserves credit for setting things straight.
