I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Webb

With Reporting By Bolu Adeyeye

At an event to promote his book on Tuesday evening, Sen. Jim Webb restated his decision to remove his name from Barack Obama's vice presidential search, offering no suggestion that he might reconsider.

"Like I've said previously," Webb remarked with a grin on his face, "I am committed to what I am doing in the United States Senate and serving the people of Virginia and of the country... But thank you for your question."

The remark, which was received by an amiable audience of more than 100 at D.C.'s Politics and Prose, was the second firm denial to VP overtures that the Virginia Democrat has issued in as many days. The former Navy Secretary had been considered a strong choice for the post but claimed that an obligation to the Senate and legislative work outweighed the allure of the Old Executive Office Building.

And yet, the fact that Webb had ostensibly removed himself from the V.P. running did not preclude him from broaching hot-button political issues. At several points in the discussion he made statements that, while not instigated by a campaign-related question, went to the heart of the contest between Obama and John McCain.

Take, for instance, remarks Webb made on the cultural divisions that had infected American politics - which ended up sounding like a defense of Obama's now notorious "bitter" comments.

"[Let's say] you're somebody who's a working person in this country, trying to make a living, trying to put your kids through school," he said. "And you look at the people from both parties, and on the key issue--you really don't see a difference... This is where the Karl Rove era moved in. They've taken this group that you're talking about, they go after their fears. They go after the abortion issues. And what happens is because people don't see the difference on the issues that are really going to take care of them, then they decide alright, I'm going to vote on who's burning my flag and who's going to let gay people get married. We know all the issues: God, guns, guts, gays, abortion, flag."

Earlier, Webb was asked about his experiences and perceptions of the Vietnam War. His response was a detailed explanation for his enlistment, punctuated by a statement that, whether intentional or not, touched on the recent flurry over McCain's military service and its relevance to the presidential campaign.

"What I've said to military leaders and people in the Republican Party who tend to politicize our military is that people don't join the military for political reasons. Very few do, and my view when I was twenty two years old was that I was going to serve my country. The Vietnam War was not going to go away..."

Much of the conversation, however, dealt with the Senator's book, "A Time to Fight," as well as the underlying thesis of that work: the need to refocus political energies on the plight of the working class. And by-and-large the crowd obliged, not querying Webb on his V.P. decision save for that one question.

Only later in the Q&A session did the Senator offer a sliver of insight into what, exactly, persuaded his mind. Asked about the benefits and downsides of the growth of political blogs, Webb delivered an answer that seemed very much a reflection on the wounds he endured during his 2006 run for the Senate.

"There is good news and bad news about blogs," he said. "Anybody can say anything about someone and they don't even have to put their name on it. And the anonymity encourages irresponsibility. And it's pretty frustrating, I'll be honest with you."

But, he added, "I wasn't [initially] sure I was going to run for office... [But] there were people in the blogging community who heard that I was thinking about running and on their own, the started a draft Webb for Senate campaign. They got a thousand signatures on it. They came over and told me and I spent an hour and a half talking with them. That was a big part in terms of convincing me, I ought to step forward and do this."

While Webb's words are important, the gulf between those on the right and the left is huge, as the Democrats have basically allowed the right to establish themselves as authorities in the lives of white, blue collar Americans who do not often benefit from the very policies behind their ideological banner of abortion, gay rights, immigration, AA, and defense. Somewhere in the past 40 years, the Democrats decided that they could expand their base beyond these folks who were clearly voting against their own interests. But, after the last few unsuccessful campaigns, the Dems may now be re-thinking their short-sighted strategy of abandoning these voters who have steadily climbed on aboard of the republican ship that rarely helps them better their lives.

The Dems must push back on the idea that the republicans are the representatives of the white man, rather they support rich people; of any color. They must also push back against the republicans' punitive religious theological leaders that substitutes 'punishment' in place of 'love' which is the central message of Christian forgiveness.

It will be an uphill battle but it must begin sooner rather than later.

Damn...Webb would of been a superb choice for Obama, i hope he reconsiders. But i understand his decision to be VP, the MSM and the conservatives would stirred a fake uproar over his writings and past views which has evolved.

What a tempest in a teapot those "concerns" are--I dont think they would get much traction on them.

I agree with Senator Webb's comment that blogging anonymity encourages irresponsibility. That's why my real last name is my online identity, and I always sign my real name to my posts. Since family, friends and business associates can read what I post, I am careful not to write anything I won't be proud for anyone to read.

... We all know all the issues: God, guns, guts, gays, abortion, flag."
______________________________________________________________________________

Sure, there are real and substantive issues which exists in the white community, but when the industry itself depends on keeping white folks happy about itself and it's difficult to deal with issues that are besides thorny, are complicated and go deeply towards the demons manifested over time in white culture: fear, race and identity; upon God, guns, guts, gays, abortion, and the flag is filtered both inwardly and outwardly.

It is then, basically far more expedient to just gloss them over and describe them as something else then confront millions of whites with undeveloped social consciousness, who are at the same time very much unconscious of the forces driving their politics.

There are more than enough white social commentators like Tim Wise who could easily cut through the typical carnards passed over daily in the media, to approach the 'heart' of this matter, but it seems that those making the executive decisions have decided it is not good for business and profits. Although, those who are hurting realize they are hurting; they can simply buy into the 'fantasy' view of the republicans, and damn the Democrats for wanting to deal with the realities of how their beliefs have harmed their lives.

And, basically nothing will change.

Sen. Webb would be an excellent choice. However, if he chooses to decline, if offered, that is no indication he will not have a role in an Obama Presidency. I'm just waiting to see how the MSM spins his decision. They are already defining it as a rejection. I think we all should just make a decision to watch the convention and election coverage on PBS or C-SPAN. How's that for getting out of the spin zone?

Yes that is the beauty if the internet, you can find an ulimited amount of information, but you can also find an unlimited amount of misinformation. It is hard to determine which is which without a strong background of knowlwdge.

Sam Stein needs to examine his own Bittergate by explaining why he he has tagged a single comment about people being bitter, that has been explained to death, with 'gate'.

Sam-how has one comment Obama made that people might be bitter become, in your world, comparable to an impeachment of a president?

And how long are you going to keep this ridiculousness going?

Nothing new happening in your world? I am sure he has said many things since that you could tag with another over the top reference.

Give it a go, you seem like a bright guy. Sort of.

I know he (webb) has problems especially with some past statements about gays and women in the military, but I don't think these past issues should not stand in the way of a VP nomination.
Who says every democrat must have the same PC views that are acceptable to the most liberal wing of our party. If we behave like this, we are no better than the right wing radicals which require loyalty/religiosity tests from all Republican presidential candidates/nominees.

We need centrists and moderately conservative democrats to create or more balanced tickets.

What is the purpose of having the same old, same old Democratic ticket that loses to an intellectually inferior republican degenerate who continues to destroy our country politically and economically every election cycle?

Webb can help Obama on several fronts: Virginia, PA, WVa and the south... I hope he reconsiders

Have you met the media lately?

They would read out loud passages of gay sex and rape from a book he wrote. They would quote him on a loop about woman having no place in the military due to hormonal issues. And I am sure there is more.

They would make the Rev Wright orgy look like a blip on the screen.

He knows it and Obama knows it.

Its wrong and shameful that the media has turned itself into the bored, bitter, neighborhood gossip.

we are losing a lot of good people thanks to the media spin.
I agree with the other poster about the only places left to get truthful info is PBS or C-SPAN. If we ALL would stop watching the other channels and stopped using their sponsored products, it would force them to change but a lot of people thrive on the spin and therefore the spin keeps getting fed and spinning out of control.

I love him because he steps out and says it. His problem is the same for a national political campaign. The media will not allow candidates to say what they want and need to say, esp not in the manner they want to say it. Its a shame.

He also has a woman problem, a racy book he wrote with gay sex and most sore sure a few skeletons that the so called media wold be more than happy to humiliate him with.

I hate the media.

I am hoping that he will change his mind and take the VP post or al least another important post with Obama admin.

He is serious man. That much is clear.

For the record, I am black, African and a woman and I still think Jim Webb is the best VP fo Obama.

Me too - a white, 61 year old and I still think Webb is best VP choice. But I guess, from his statements, that's not going to happen. Although he did say a petition signed by 1,000 people persuaded him to run for the Senate.....

I am an older white female and I am currently reading Sen. Obama's first book, Dreams from My Father. I would contend that it is also about US history.

It was slow going at first, but since I got to that part where Obama moves to Chicago I haven't been able to put it down. The more I read the more convinced I become that this man will make a brilliant president.
