"I've been trying to exercise a little bit, which I'm told does wonders for a person."

With that line, Sen. Hillary Clinton drew the first of several laughs from the largely female crowd in attendance at her joint appearance with a comparatively less energetic Barack Obama Thursday morning at the Hilton Towers in New York City. Hosted by Women for Obama and the DNC's Women's Leadership Forum, the event was another pit stop on the "unity" tour that kicked off in New Hampshire two weeks ago.

And, at least as a speaker, Sen. Hillary Clinton proved that she is currently in tip-top shape. After noting that Obama told her she looked "rested" at an event last night, the New York Democrat admitted to reaping the benefits of a non-campaign schedule, but also showed she is still willing to bring some partisan fire and enthusiasm whenever she is invited to join him on the trail this fall.

On issues ranging from education to abortion rights to global warming, Clinton pointed to Obama as the superior candidate for women. On climate change, Clinton took a moment to mock President Bush by accusing him of just discovering the issue months before leaving office. "Gosh, this is a problem, and I sure hope the next president does something about it," Clinton said while impersonating the president -- adding, in her own voice, "well so do I!"

But beyond the yucks and the fired-up phrasing, the former presidential candidate did also take a moment to talk about the still-raw wounds dating from the primary season.

"Now I've had countless conversations since the end of my campaign," she began. "And I know how difficult it is for people who have invested their time, energy and emotion -- just their entire being -- into any campaign or cause. ... When it is over, I know how difficult that is ... how challenging it is to turn on a dime. It is a process. It does take time for people to take a deep breath, to go forward. ... But anyone who voted for me has so much in common with those who voted for Barack. ... It is critical that we join forces. The Democratic Party is a family -- sometimes a dysfunctional family -- but it is a family. We care about what is going to happen to health care [and education], and in Afghanistan in Iraq. ... That work cannot be done if we do not have a Democratic president in the White House!"

As she wrapped up her remarks and began to introduce Obama, Clinton said, "this is the man -- this is the one -- we should be voting for. ... Do it for your children. Do it for your jobs. Do it for the education of future generations."

At which point, the crowd of women (and a few scattered men) took up the "Yes We Can" chant. With close to 2,000 people paying $250 per head to participate in the latest display of unity, that meant a cool half million dollars in one morning's work for the Obama campaign.

UPDATE: Some AP video from the event:

I wish she didn't have such high negatives with independents and Obama=leaning repupublicans because I would love to have her on the ticket.

Maybe this polling has changed since the primary?

Good for Hillary.

I truly think HIllary is going to be one of our GREAT Senators, somewhat like Ted Kennedy. And I suspect she and Barack will be working closely on health care. But I also hope she takes care of HERSELF. Her husband has not treated her well. She deserves some self-indulgence. Sometimes she seems too cerebral for her own good.

Sometimes I think it would be marvelous for her if she fell deeply and passionately in love, mutual love. Other times I think it is better if she just gets a sweet, playful, affectionate dog and focuses the rest of her life on her own interests and priorities (which will always include politics).

Kennedy, Clinton, and Elizabeth Edwards will get health care through. It won't look anything like Obama's plan. That was a farce from the beginning and was only meant to get him through the primary. Much like being anti-NAFTA.

Hey Seth,

Okay, so the Politics front page said "Clinton Outshines Obama at Women's Event,"

Where in this story does it say that Clinton outshone Obama? The phrase "comparatively less energetic Obama" is used -- but hey... do you not think Obama might have been PURPOSEFULLY understated to allow Clinton to bask in the glow of the spotlight? Did you maybe think that by letting Clinton be the "belle of the ball" it would go far to salve the still bleeding hearts of La Feminista Clintonista?

Yeah, I didn't think that you did.

More likely he was taking a back seat so she could rake in more money for him. And she did. She brought more than $4 million into his campaign coffers yesterday. Trash her and her supporters all you want. Then spend their money. You'll feel good about yourself.

I still have a nagging feeling that our Ms Hill will be pulling some tricky stuff come the August Convention. I guess we will have to wait and see...

What are you so afraid of? That she'll give him a wedgie? She is supposed to be allowed to speak. Her supporters are supposed to be allowed to put her name in nomination. That is the way it works. The superdelegates have not yet voted but that should not worry you either. Being frightened does not show confidence in your candidate. He doesn't seem to be having any trouble getting the convention organized.

I didn't during the primaries... but i'm starting to be more convinced that she should be on the ticket. She would be a force to be reckoned with and I don't see it hurting the ticket at all.

I don't see how it is possible for her to be on the ticket with the Clinton baggage. Too, the Clintons seem to bring with them a perpetual soap opera wherever they go; do we really need this?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 11:36 AM on 07/10/2008

What the same tired baggage we've heard about for years and years. No, Obama right now is giving them all they need plus whatever else they have that they won't release until after the convention.

I completely agree. I think with Webb pulling himself out of the running, she may now be the top of the class, along with John Edwards (though I'd prefer him as the next Attorney General). The only things that concern me are that she carries a high unfavorability rating and that he beat her during the primary by pointing out that she'd been in Washington too long. However, I think people generally vote for the top of the ticket more than anything else.

I also think that Clinton would make an excellent choice for the Supreme Court, but Obama could never say that publicly before getting elected, because nothing would fire up the sleeping Republican base quite like the idea of her on that bench.

Then the Repugs will feel like they are being invited to a smorgasboard for sure. I can hear McFlop and crew saying yum yum nice tender juicy morsels, would you like dark meat or white! With the Clinton past baggage and the fabricated baggage they will have created about Obama by the fall. Yea I see that ticket as no problem!

This story makes me happy - I like that women responded strongly to Clinton, and I like that women took up the Yes We Can chant. If this builds as they stump together, that unity ticket thing will start to look really good....

Sounds like she did a fine job. What she should say is:
"Any of you who plan to vote for McCain, DON"T. I will take it as a personal assault.

I am sure Bill will not endorse Barack any time soon.

It's nice to hear. It was sad to see BHO supporters' compassion and manners fly out the window during the primaries. Some of us owe Senator Clinton an apology for our rudeness. Maybe we've learned something.
