WASHINGTON — The AFL-CIO is mobilizing union members who are military veterans to work against Republican presidential candidate John McCain and other office seekers it opposes, officials said Thursday.

John Sweeney, the president of the labor federation, announced the creation of a Union Veterans Council in a teleconference Thursday. The union, which endorsed Democrat Barack Obama for president last month, plans to form state councils of union veterans in key election battlegrounds, including Wisconsin, Minnesota, Colorado, Ohio and West Virginia. Later, it plans to organize in Pennsylvania, Michigan and Virginia.

The new council will include close to a dozen state affiliates and will also coordinate other veterans groups "to raise the profile of veterans issues and lead the way in securing an economy that works for all," he said.

"With the formation of the Union Veterans Council, veterans will be front and center in the effort to put our country back on track," Sweeney said.

Key issues will include money for the Veterans Affairs Department, health and education benefits for veterans, and job growth, he said.

The union also launched an ad that will air Thursday that features a Vietnam combat veteran criticizing McCain's stance on the war in Iraq and on veterans issues. The ad will air for three weeks on national cable and in Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Wisconsin, union officials said.

The outreach effort will include door-to-door canvassing and visits to worksites by veterans to talk to union members about issues in the election. The union also plans to identify and track union veterans.

The AFL-CIO estimates it has 2.1 million members who are either veterans or are serving in active duty in the military.

The Union Veterans Council will be active beyond the 2008 elections. "We're starting our work with a push to elect leaders who will put working people's concerns first," Sweeney said.

Mark Ayers, president of the Building & Construction Trades Council, will chair the council.

"As veterans we respect Sen. McCain's military service to our country, but we don't respect his record in the United States Senate," Ayers told reporters on the call.

"Not only has he voted the wrong way on veterans issues _ such as opposing increased funding for veterans' health care the last four years in a row _ but he also doesn't support middle-class workers' issues," Ayers said. "He wants to tax workers' health care benefits and supports unfair trade deals, including NAFTA, CAFTA and others."

In response, the Republican National Committee said, "It's no surprise the AFL-CIO is now coming to Obama's assistance and attacking McCain."

Thank God! Mc Same does NOT care about our vets - his own voting record is being used against him - I hope all vets stand together and realize this man has voted against vets for the past 7 years.

As a Vietnam Veteran (DaNang-1969), I cannot accept the rationale of John McCain regarding his recent votes against improving the lot of veterans, especially Iraq and Afghan vets. You cannot put debits and credits when comparing recruiting and retention. To me that it too simplistic. The quality of today's US soldier is the best in the world. They are the best trained. The sophistication of today's weaponry demands that we retain those men and women but not at the expense of others. .

I have to say how proud I am to know a few of these Viet Nam vets that have the passion and fortitude to just keep on fighting for not only their Veterans Benefits but those after them.

Here in SD are the 'Veterans for Peace'. They are all over this country.
Take the time and give a donation to this wonderful group of Veterans who work so hard.

I am so proud to know them!

Lets hope that the dumb average union members, especially the Vets, who've been stupid enough to vote for Bush, who sent their kids to die in Iraq for nothing and did all in his power to bankrupt the country with debt while lining the pockets of the rich with tax cuts, will finally wake up and vote their interests, instead of being conned yet again by Republicans to vote for McCain. If these dumb people had consistently voted Domocratic for the past thirty years, we'd have a totally different country, and no wars in the Middle East. NONE. It's the "hard-working, WHITE" union guys who hold the balance of power in PA, OH, MI, etc. Will you guys please stop voting in such a stupid way?!

I'm not sure calling them "dumb average" or "stupid" is the best way to convince them...

What I don't understand is how and why are our factories being traded to Nafta countries? I can understand removing tarrifs, but how can American Cororations get away with shipping the entire factory there thus avoiding income tax, social security payments, workman's comp and corporate taxes. If this line of reasoning is carried to the extreme there will be none of those payments being made by American Corporations. I think that is as unAmerican as it gets.

The reason Tariffs exist are to prevent companies from sending their factories to a country with fewer regulations and cheaper wages from undercutting local production.

NAFTA removed that tariff, so there was nothing left to even out the cost of the Mexican factories.

McCain't opposed the new GI Bill (saying it's too generous !!), and he wants to talk on behalf of Vets ?
Being a war hero doesn't qualify McCain't to be commander in chief and president of the USA.

Being a POW for 5 1/2 years does not automatically make one a hero.

Note to RNC: The AFLCio is supporting Obama, and not McCain ,because McCain has no integrity!
McCain turns his back on fellow military people!

My son in law is a veteran of the Iraq war and he says that it's hard to get military people to speak up against this administration. He says that when anyone is interviewed, it's usually the higher ranking vets and they always go along with whatever the administration is spewing. He thinks that if someone really got a chance to speak with the lower ranking people, it would not be a bee line for the likes of John McCain. I really don't think it will be real hard for the Unions to find Vets that will not be for McCain.

How is it , Olivia that you have have been on the Huffington Post for last 15 hours straight? And how are you getting all these comments posted while we whoa re questioning Obama are being thoroughly censored so that most of our posts are not appearing?

You have made so many comments attacking anyone who doesn't agree with you --Check her profile-- that the profile space only goes back till noon before it is full.
I've been watching it since morning. And there isn't even room for your first posts

How many Olivia's are there really and who is paying them?.

What exactly is going on here?
