Freedom's Watch, the conservative advocacy group that has vowed to spend millions against Democratic congressional candidates this fall, will be running robocalls this week in 16 congressional districts where Democratic incumbents seem vulnerable, or where an open seat has given rise to a competitive election.

The robocalls will focus on the issue of high gas prices. Ed Patru, vice president for communications at Freedom's Watch, said the group sees this as an especially hot issue for voters: "We believe that energy, and specifically the high price of gas, is the number one issue in the country right now."

There are two scripts for the robocalls: one that runs against congressional incumbents, and another that runs against challenger who hold state elective office.

Democrats should not be popping any corks yet. After all, Congresses approval is lower than the most unpopular president in recent history. Could it be that congress continues to rollover to the republicans and let them set the agenda? or the failure to deliver on the issues that swept the new majority into power - like unfair trade and ending the war?

Overconfidence will once again be the dems achilles heal. Obama moving to the cneter will be his undoing as well

Do not "misunderestimate" the rights capacity for smear politics. They are like cornered animals and will be turning the slime machine all the way up to eleven. Sadly smear and fear works among the less educated and willfully ignorant voter.

And frankly many of the weak spined democrats should go - lets start with Reid, Pelosi, Emanuel, Rangel and Hoyer. they need to be replaced with more populist leaning progressives more in tune with the will of the people and deliver on ending the war and economic fairness

I would like to think the media would actually educate the public about such political tools. Yes, I'd like it, but realize it's not going to come from the corporate media that benefits from it. And most of the public is not watching Bill Moyers and/or NOW.

All you 'pubs go right ahead and spend all your money on old-style smear tactics. The 'pubs tried it in Mississippi, running commercials and placing robocalls linking the Democratic candidate to Barack Obama - the Democratic candidate won handily in a district which had voted solidly Republican for decades. The American people can see the man behind the curtain and he's a corrupt, morally bankrupt fraud.

So their policies (soft dollar, saber-rattling, economic slowdown, low mileage standards) cause gas prices to skyrocket and then they want to use it as an issue to get themselves elected in order to create policies that will enrich the oil companies further and won't do anything in particular to solve the problem (more drilling) and enrich the oil companies.

Vulnerable Dems? Is there such a thing as invulnerable dems I dont believe so. For the most intelligent of the two party system Dems sure have been acting dumb and when you act dumb you become vulnerable because then you are playing on Rethugs turf. They thrive where there is ignorance and dumbness thats their strong suit. You dont believe me think about it they are attacking them on GAS PRICES. Who's more responsible for high gas prices in this country Dems or Rethugs. I rest my case.
