Gen. Jeffery Hammond told The Associated Press on Friday is the greatest threat facing American troops in Iraq now. (AP Photo/Robert Burns)

CAMP LIBERTY, Iraq — U.S. forces may be close to unlocking the mystery of who is behind a deadly innovation in Iraqi insurgents' weapons, a "lob bomb" now being used in Baghdad to target U.S. and Iraqi combat outposts, a senior American general said Friday in an Associated Press interview.

Maj. Gen. Jeffery Hammond, commander of U.S. forces in Baghdad, called the weapon "the greatest threat right now that we face," and he likened the shadowy group behind it to the American military's elite Delta Force.

The weapon is particularly worrying because it is designed to cause catastrophic damage and cannot be stopped once it has been launched, Hammond, commander of the 4th Infantry Division, said in an interview in his office at this U.S. military headquarters compound just west of the capital.

U.S. forces detained a man on Thursday who Hammond said could provide valuable insights into the group behind the bombmaking. "We think we have defined the network," he said. He would not elaborate, although other American officers said in interviews that the group is Shiite and may have links to Iran.

"We think we might have picked up a guy that could lead us _ could be a big lead in this," Hammond said.

It's not clear whether this small group is related to efforts by anti-American Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr to revitalize his Mahdi Army, which had held sway in the Sadr City section of Baghdad until U.S. and Iraqi forces wrested control after seven weeks of fighting that ended in May.

Arguing against a link to such an al-Sadr initiative is the fact that the group that Hammond described has been operating since at least late 2007, although it has become more active in recent months.

The 107 mm rockets that are used in the improvised bombs _ which some call an airborne version of the roadside bombs that through the course of the war have been the leading killer of U.S. troops _ are manufactured in Iran, officials said. But some officers cautioned against assuming Iran is directly involved.

The weapons are launched from small trucks and are fired in multiples of four to nine rockets at a time. The detonation is sometimes triggered by a signal from a cell phone, other times by a washing machine timer.

Brig. Gen. Will Grimsley, deputy commander of U.S. forces in Baghdad, said in a separate AP interview on Thursday that for lack of a better term he refers to the group as "the evil militia." He said it is small and exhibits a high degree of technical skill in assembling the weapons and executing attacks.

The military calls the weapon an "improvised rocket-assisted mortar," or IRAM.

Grimsley on Thursday went to the Sadr City section of eastern Baghdad to visit a joint U.S.-Iraqi military outpost that suffered an IRAM attack on April 28. The building was heavily damaged, and 15 U.S. soldiers were wounded, none seriously enough to prevent their return to duty, said Lt. Col. Steven Stover, a military spokesman.

The weapon innovation has gained relatively little public attention because it has yet to kill in large numbers.

So far, in 11 attacks, three U.S. soldiers have been killed, Stover said. The three were killed April 28 _ the same day as the Sadr City assault _ in an attack on a larger U.S. base in eastern Baghdad.

At the Sadr City base, Grimsley consulted with Lt. Col. Brian Eifler, commander of 1st Battalion, 6th Armor, 2nd Brigade, 1st Armored Division, inside a newly constructed combat outpost a stone's throw from the damaged one. Eifler said he is focused heavily on the IRAM threat and how to minimize it.

Eifler estimated that a U.S. soldier who might be in position to witness the approach of a potential IRAM-bearing vehicle would have less then two seconds to decide whether the person emerging from it has just set it for firing or is simply an innocent driver getting out to change a tire.

"That's a call our young soldiers have to make when potentially 200 lives are at stake," Eifler said.

Hammond said the perpetrators are so skilled that he has likened their organization to the U.S. military's secretive and elite Delta Force. He said they have demonstrated an unusual degree of military skill and cunning.

"They don't leave a forensic trail, and that just means we're going to have to work a little bit longer" to eliminate them, he said. "Of everything we've had to deal with here, this is a tough one. They're sort of the Delta Force of this enemy we face out there. They are very good" at covering their tracks, picking out targets and preserving secrecy about their membership and movements.

The Busheviks may be patting themselves on the back thinking they've won the war, when all they've done is sow the wind with their avarice-driven folly.

They will reap the whirlwind accordingly.

Most powerful military in the world $100,000.00 of equipment on each troops back. That's just the start.

Up against a washing machine timer.

Vietnam all over again.

Just proves that this Republican War mania has gotten us nowhere except to get our GIs maimed or killed. But obviously Bush cares less about that statistic than proving he can outdo his daddy in Iraq. I guess he is so stubborn that he is unaware that his daddy's Iraq war was a rousing success a truly international coalition not only sending military but also footing the bill. Once again, GW fumbles around in his attempt to outdo his daddy and makes a total mess of things. SAD SAD!!!!!!

This is just more propaganda to get sympathy from the American people so they can attack Iran....

Yes. And they should've titled the article - PROPAGANDA for American Consumption Only because people in other countries recognize information warfare when they read it.

Just ridiculous.

Some of you are missing a glairingly obvious point, proven this past week as events unfold:

It was never the intention of Junior and his administration to win.

They want perpetual war.

Proof, I said? Yes; the Iraqis have handed us victory and we refuse to accept it. Victory was re-defined as "As they stand up, we'll stand down." That is, victory is when the Iraqis are ready to continue without us.

Yet, Junior and McSame refuse to acknowledge that they are handing us victory on a platter!

Just proves the point: It was never about victory (or about oil); it's always only ever been about money.

Just more spin from the "Green Zone"!
We had SURGES for 15+ years in Vietnam & they all played out the same;
The NVA/VC would be active in an area and we would "SURGE in.
Enemy activity would taper off, and the Generals and Politicians would declare success.
The New York Times & The Washington Post would write that VICTORY was right around the corner.
Then the NVA/VC would become active someplace else.
Then the Politicians would trot out the Generals who "won" the first SURGE and they would say "All we need is more troops and a little more time, and we can win this surge too!"

I think I would prefer that our troop were making Washington DC safe for Democracy.

In the USA, gang stalkers openly and notorikously poison whomever they like while the government and often corrupt police watch.

You make an interesting point.

So we stand for liberty and democracy and Washington DC is our capital.

Very interesting.

I was in DC for a vacation and a policeman saw that I had made a wrong turn. He saw that I was lost and he told me that I really didn't want to be in XYZ neighborhood. Without asking, he offered to escort me out. I'll never forget that.

Another time, this time after 9-11, and I do happen to be very brown and sport ''profile-able'' physical ''features of interest'', I couldn't find a parking spot, so I parked in a temporary spot and walked over to some officers to ask for where I might be able to park. Suddenly, I was surrounded by rifles pointed at me from many directions. At some point they must have felt I was benign and stopped pointing them at me. They then told me where I'd likely be able to find a parking spot and wished me a nice day. Got to admit that was pretty darn scary. I felt like I was in some kind of police-state. YIKES!

"They don't leave a forensic trail,...."
So why are they saying they are made in Iran?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 02:05 PM on 07/12/2008

Because Bush/Cheney told them to say that!

Scene before the war, the "Professonal Officer Corps" has been lying through it's teeth for these psychopathic NeoCons! And the Generals got shiny new stars for it! And the Troops got to come home in boxs.

Probably because the forensic trail is similar in nature to the one for WMDs in Iraq.

Another thing,so what if iran is helping them,is the coalition not helping america destroy lives and livlihood.

if iran stands around and watches silently while america destroys the middle east, the whole middle east will spit in irans face for not giving support for people destined for the grave.

GET AMERICA AND ITS PARTNERS OUT

America will never win this war or any other war

the main problem i america underestimates others.

America's greatest threat..ha
how about iraq'a greatest threat ( america)

Well the best solution for america is to get the hell out of other people's countries, and mind itsown business, then the dove of peace will start flying higher and higher.

Maybe we should give the insurgents some old Soviet tanks and MIG aircraft.

We can beat those...

Why is anyone surprised that the Iraqi Insurgency has clever and innovative people in it.

Iraq fought an 8 year war with Iran using some of the more sophisticated weapons of the day. They had numerous cadres trained in every facet of of every weapons system of the day.

Where do you think all those people went?

They may or may not have ties with Iran. But Civilization developed in the region of what is now Iraq and Iran maybe 10,000 years ago.

And the art of smuggling was invented the next day.

Underestimation has been the hallmark of this whole fiasco. Our troops have suffered because of it.

Don't forget, we were on the Iraqi side during that 8 year war. We provided, weapons and "expertise".
We did the same thing with the Taliban...when they were called the Mujahadine (sp).
It is to a large degree, American "expertise" that is coming back on us.

Actually, they have stockpiles of these rounds that they got from Saddam's ammo dumps that were left unguarded by Donald "Stuff Happens" Rumsfeld & crew.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 11:42 AM on 07/12/2008

Funny you should mention that.

Shortly after news reports that one of those dumps had been looted, I asked a Brig General who had just returned from Iraq how such a thing could happen, and if he was worried the missing munitions might be used against American troops in the future.

His (off the record) response?

There hadn't been enough troops to post guards on the bunker, and he didn't want to speculate as to any danger the missing munitions might present in the future.

I then asked him why a demo team hadn't simply blown the bunker up.

He looked perplexed for a moment before saying, "I guess no one thought about it.".

Sadly, so true. We may not have had a Hitler ... but instead, we had some of the worst leaders imaginable these past long 8 years.

Thanks to the U.S. & some of its allies, Iraq is now a nation of uncontrolled violence & cold-blooded killings, human suffering, terrorism & constant fear. It outrages me how such (previously, unaccountable) greed, lust, and power from certain political leaders (eg., Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, etc.) easily & quickly moved into the suppression of important human rights at home & abroad (Iraq) ~ such as commitment to safety of others, appropriate treatment of others/detainees, not abandoning negotiations and respect for Muslim country's ideologies & lifestyles, etc.

If Barack Obama wins ~ which I'm hoping ~ he will have to come up with an incredibly savvy plan/program that will enable troops to return home, as well as leaving war-ridden Iraqi society alone but with ample financial support for rebuilding. There are too many Americans, British & others stationed in Iraq (outside the military), waiting to see which way the Iraqi oil will flow.

There is no way to un-do the mistake of invading and occupying Iraq. It was a mistake to go there and it is a bigger mistake to continue to stay. There is absolutely nothing that our military can do by remaining in Iraq that can un-do that mistake. Every day that we remain, we perpetuate the same mistake, over and over and over again.

Leaving next year is a bigger mistake than leaving this year.
Leaving next month is a bigger mistake than leaving this month.
Leaving next week is a bigger mistake than leaving this week.
Leaving tomorrow is a bigger mistake than leaving today.

Iraq is an ongoing failure that cannot be un-failed by staying there.

So we must leave.
