McCain Divorce Account Contradicts Court Documents

LA Times:

McCain, who is about to become the GOP nominee, has made several statements about how he divorced Carol and married Hensley that conflict with the public record.

In his 2002 memoir, "Worth the Fighting For," McCain wrote that he had separated from Carol before he began dating Hensley.

"I spent as much time with Cindy in Washington and Arizona as our jobs would allow," McCain wrote. "I was separated from Carol, but our divorce would not become final until February of 1980."

An examination of court documents tells a different story. McCain did not sue his wife for divorce until Feb. 19, 1980, and he wrote in his court petition that he and his wife had "cohabited" until Jan. 7 of that year -- or for the first nine months of his relationship with Hensley.

Although McCain suggested in his autobiography that months passed between his divorce and remarriage, the divorce was granted April 2, 1980, and he wed Hensley in a private ceremony five weeks later. McCain obtained an Arizona marriage license on March 6, 1980, while still legally married to his first wife.

Question: If he was married before his divorce was final, then legally he isn't married to Cindy McCain? So he committed bigamy and has been living in sin for many years? There are all sorts of legal ramifications if the post marriage divorce nullifies their marital status.

He got the marriage license in March but his divorce wasn't final until April. He got married again 5 weeks later. The question is, did the marriage license have a statement affirming that he was already divorced? If so, would that make the marriage license void?

Most sate marriage licenses are only good for 30 days after filing for one. I wonder what Arizona allows?

Well, it was Ross Perot who paid for all of Carol's medical expenses after John left to marry Cindy.

Ross was sincerely committed to helping the returning vets from Viet Nam.

That's wrong. Perot paid for Carol's medical expenses while McCain was in Vietnam, because Carol did not want McCain to know about her accident.

Perot did not pay for Carol's further care once McCain returned. And McCain stayed with Carol for seven years after he came back from Vietnam. He didn't just take off when he saw how injured she was -- which seems to be the impression some posters have.

But when you either lie when getting a second marriage about a pending divorce, or forget about ythe 1st marriage, that is fair game. Maybe old sparky was just having too much fun to remember his soon to be ex-wife. Or maybe he is so callous that he did it in spite. Or maybe it was early alzheimer's.

A marriage is a legal contract. When you lie on a contract, you are committing a civil or criminal wrong.

If he forgot his wife or did it out of spite (who you would think would be as important to him as anyone else excepting kids), you can imgaine how he will feel about you as a citizen. If he forgot bc of alzheimer's, well then that's something different too.

Third, different issues have different effects on people. I suspect many middle aged 1st wives (though not all) would find this subject very helpful in making a voting decision. And maybe some of them had no problem with the infamous philandering in the prev admin, or at least found it not important enough to impeach.
