Washington Independent:

In a sign of continued weakness in his home state, an online poll shows Sen. John McCain trailing Sen. Barack Obama by 3-percentage points in Arizona. The poll also shows the candidacy of Libertarian Bob Barr is having a significant impact on McCain's campaign by siphoning off conservative voters nationwide.

The Arizona poll was part of nationwide Zogby International poll that put Obama ahead in total electoral votes with 273 to 160 for McCain. The poll found 11 states with 105 electoral votes too close to call -- including Arizona. McCain's campaign in June included Arizona among its list of swing states.

(Matt Mahurin) McCain not only faced problems with Independent voters, he is losing a small, but potentially lethal voting block of the GOP right to Barr. The former Republican congressman from Georgia is pulling just enough voters in many states to shift the balance to Obama. Whether this bloc will remain in Barr's camp on election day could determine the outcome.

All signs and historical patterns suggest a "LANDSLIDE" this cycle. I seriously doubt that the G E L D I NG is gonna be the victor. Imagine the energy that would take not to mention an enthusiastic base - The crads are just not there for the G E LD I N G. As an Arizona resident there aren't enough citizens in Sun City nor Sun City West nor Youngtown nor El mirage to "pump-up" the Arizona vote. Furthermore, THE G E L D I N G is NOT AN ARIZONA FAVORTE SON!!! He's not from ARIZONA - heck, as far as I know he's not even a NATURAL BORN CITIZEN - THE PANAMA ZONE his pkace of birth was NEVER a US TERRITORY!!! (It was leased land from a soverign nation!!)

One additional FACT: At the time our seated and beloved "republican" Governor Jane Dee Hull endorsed George in 2000 NOT Johnny. Go figure.

Well, I have to disagree with you. I saw McCain at a Diamondbacks game a month or so ago. He has a good pair of seats. He was introduced to the crowd who gave him a very loud, long ovation with very few boos.

McCain is also strong in Phoenix, Mesa and among LDS voters who tend to vote family values and among militray veterans of all ages. Obama may possibly make inroads there, who knows.

McCain has a weak spot, his immigration reform plan cost him a tremendous amount of support among conservatives. Will he make that up? Maybe.

I would not underestimate McCain. His candidacy was declared dead in the primaries. Now he is the nominee.

Oh I know very well! I wanted to drop laughing when I saw his commercial about how he was so "for the enviroment" all while thick smog covers the city, and he votes against expanding solar power and recycling programs ( no such animal in Phoenix) and slacks on corporate /commercial immisions. He's a joke...

The last president to win the White House while losing his home state was Woodrow Wilson, the only other one ever was James Polk.

But when you start to talk about Barr as a 'spoiler' consider this. If so many Arizona Republicans are willing to dump their favorite son for someone with limited name recognition and no really standout accomplishments from an entirely different region is it because Bob Barr is doing so well or because McCain is doing so poorly with his core? Common sense would say the latter.

To those making noise about the unreliability of Zogby or online polls generally, just imagine this:

Illinois: McCain 47 : Obama 44

Can you honestly say thaat all hell will not let loose? The MSM will discuss it to death. This is not about the source. The fact that Obama can beat McCain in AZ is HUGE news at the present state of the campaign.

As an AZ resident I am fed up with the MSM pandering to both McCain and Obama. Both have warts and Johnny Mc being the oldest has the bigger and older warts. We don't need another old rich white man in charge of this country. Give someone else a chance. Vote them all out. Follow the money. Why do you think the Obama and McCain both voted for the FISA bill. How about 350K and 220K respectively in this election cycle. We don't need more politics as usual and that is what McCain is and Obama is turning into.

To be fair, McCain was AWOL for the vote, yet he still had the temerity to criticize Obama's decision to change his mind.

Not saying that you aren't right on one level, but it's unrealistic to expect that every incumbent be voted out, or that neither Obama or McCain will be elected.

How did McSlimey win in Arizona? Not once but several times?

If he doesn't do his job, if everybody can't stand him, what's the attraction?
Why does he get elected over and over again?

You have a good point. McCain seems to have a consitituent base of support that is deep and wide. He has been challenged, and survived every time.

The more the guy is belittled the better he does.

How about the voters being too "busy" and just plain lazy? My youngest daughter refers to the voting public as sheep. I've always called her on it, but maybe she's right. One of the reasons this country is in sad shape is because we have been lazy and let others do our thinking for us (the news media). I am so afraid we're going lose what little we have left of our rights as citizen. Please people, keep yourselves informed and GO VOTE!

You have to understand that years ago the dems made a cowardly deal during redistricting. They agreed to being uncompetitive at the state level in return for receiving safe seats. There really isn't a democratic party at the state level. In my district, for example, the dems won't even field candidates for state house or senate. The races are decided during the rep primaries so your choices are to register rep or be disenfranchised.

Every once in awhile someone like Napolitano wins despite having no party base but it takes an exceptional candidate to do that. There simply is no party to field serious democratic candidates for Senate.

it's because the AZ citizens know what he's all about. I know people who live there. They can't stand McCain. They said he doesn't do anything for AZ he only does for himself. The fact that McCain has missed 60+% of the votes really pisses them off too. Who can balme them. I'd be so pissed off if my Senators did not even show up to vote -what the hell are we paying him a six-figure salary for????!

Since I was born and raised in Arizona I can add something of substance. I have yet to vote for McCain in the last 20+years. My mother worked for Senator Dennis DeConcini (D) and his campaign.

McCain has always been a mixed bag in the state with the larger metro area of Phoenix heavily supporting him and the more liberal Tucson area not so much.

I can tell you that this Zogby poll is not reflective of his actual support. The Phoenix metro area has a strong base of support for McCain in its retirees and in the north part of the state among rural voters.

No other poll in Arizona has Obama ahead or even close

This one is probably no more than wishful thinking.

You said the a very magic word.....paying him. We pay all of them. They are our empolyees that we have hired. Their resume is their campaign speeches.....if they lie on their "resumes" we should be able to fire them (impeach). The people have the power through the vote. We've forgotten that and have been to busy and lazy to keep up with things. See what it's got us? GO VOTE! And learn the issues!!

I think the Huffington Post should hold a fundraiser for Bob Barr. It would be like giving more than the maximum amount to the Obama campaign.

Good point, he was sweating bullets over a question.
Really good point, I'd hate to find out he reacts with a war situation,
like going and starting another one.
Just what we need another war prone president.

That is a great idea. Maybe we should start our own "operation chaos" and start blogging about the fact that Barr is the only true conservative in the race. Any votes we can pull away from McCain will only help Obama.

Man, I saw McCain sweating as he tried to answer the viagra question and I really don't know how anybody could vote for him over Obama. He looked and sounded pathetic. In the 21st century, that is the face you want to represent this country? I don't think so.

And Rasmussen has Obama whooping McDubya in Wisconsin by double digits. REmember, Wisconsin is a state both Gore and Kerry barely carried.

What did McDubya say about the Packers today? Didn't he confuse them with the Steelers?

Off subject a little. Packer and Bears. This is the oldest NFL rivial in history. Most Cheese headz (I'm a huge Bears fan) I meet hate the Bears yet respect the team. The same is said about the Bears fans we hate the Packers yet we respect them. Since Obama is a huge NFL fan and has first hand experience on this by being in Chicago he can relate to them on that level. Packer fans respect that and like him a lot for that. Obama might do well in Packerland in Nov.

Yeah. Obama's only character flaw is that he's a big Bears/Cubs fan. I suppose he can't be perfect. Other than that, I agree with your post.

Arizona helped carry Bill Clinton to his second term, and Arizona will negate McCain a first one.

The sense of entitlement McCain claims when denying his handicap at leading, is trickle-down arrogance from the most inept, incompetent, and worst president of the USA: George Bush.....McCain is wearing it well.

Zogby polls are questionable.

Online polls are questionable.

This is a Zogby online poll.

I agree with you about the Zogby polls but even if AZ is close that speaks about how weak a candidate McBush is.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 03:38 PM on 07/11/2008

McCain will probably retain a 15-20 point lead in Arizona. Rassmussen was not an online poll and you have to remember McCain has tremendous strength among lots of retirees in Arizona. Rasmussen is as independent as you can get in a pollster. Their stuff usually turns out to be close.

Bill Clinton did carry Arizona in one election. He carried it because he did exactly what Obama is now doing. Moving very much to the right.

Your statement about him being weak in Arizona is probably wishful thinking.

You can say what you want be even the right leaning pollster Rasmussen has McBush slipping from a 20 point lead in AZ in April to a 9 point lead in late June.

This spells big trouble for McBush.

Trouble for McBush can also be seen in Texas polling. If Obama runs close in Texas look out. It could be an Obama landslide.
