CHICAGO (AP) _ Comedian Bernie Mac endured some heckling and a campaign rebuke during a surprise appearance Friday night at a fundraiser for Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama.

Toward the end of a 10-minute standup routine at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in downtown Chicago, the 50-year-old star of "The Bernie Mac Show" joked about menopause, sexual infidelity and promiscuity, and used occasional crude language.

"My little nephew came to me and he said, 'Uncle, what's the difference between a hypothetical question and a realistic question?'" Mac said. "I said, I don't know, but I said, 'Go upstairs and ask your mother if she'd make love to the mailman for $50,000.'"

As the joke continued, the punchline evoked an angry response from at least one person in the audience, who said it was offensive to women.

"It's not funny. Let's get Barack on," a man shouted from the crowd, which paid $2,300 each to support the Illinois senator.

About 15 minutes later, Obama tried to smooth things over with a joke of his own.

"We can't afford to be divided by race. We can't afford to be divided by region or by class and we can't afford to be divided by gender, which by the way, that means, Bernie, you've got to clean up your act next time," Obama said. "This is a family affair. By the way, I'm just messing with you, man."

The incident drew response from Obama's campaign, which criticized Mac for his choice of material.

"Sen. Obama told Bernie Mac that he doesn't condone these statements and believes what was said was inappropriate," spokeswoman Jen Psaki said in a statement after the event.

Mac, a Chicago native, said he's a longtime Obama supporter and called the presumptive Democratic nominee a "man's man" while offering him advice for the duration of the campaign trail.

"People like rumors. They're going to say things like you was at the club with Lil' Kim, and you and Kanye West got into a fist fight," he said. "You can't get upset. You've got to keep hope alive."

Mac's appearance was Obama's first celebrity event of the evening. Later at a Lincoln Park nightclub, Obama spoke to a raucous crowd of music fans, who paid up to $500 per person to see a performance by Wilco lead singer Jeff Tweedy, and two other band members.

"Before these guys go, I want them to know that I had heard a rumor that they had suggested that I had nothing by them on my iPod," Obama said. "That is not true. I love Wilco."

You mean he says he likes Wilco.

In his Rolling Stone interview he talked about the other musicians that he enjoyed and listened to, but reading the story I could not tell if it was real or just playing to the readers of the magazine.

Well...I'm 60 and thanks to my 22 year old daughter, I've got Wilco on my iPod (Jesus, Don't Cry is a great song).

Matter of fact, my daughter drove to Boston for a Wilco concert and she called me from the concert, said "Listen to this dad", then held the phone up so I could hear, "Tall buildings shake, voices escape singing sad, sad songs...."

A real special moment.

Maybe I can vote for this guy after all.

Great. Now O will, of course, be blamed by the MSM for these comments as well, even though he did not do anything to cause them.

Meanwhile, the MSM will explain away Phil Gramm, McLumpy's chief economic advisor, who commented that Americans were "whiners" about the economy.

Exactly. They really glossed over Gramm's comment. All McCain has to do is say "So-and-so doesn't speak for me" and it's over, the MSM leaves him alone about it. Barack, on the other hand, is stuck with the guilt by association curse for at least a week any time someone else makes a comment.

You're being generous to the MSM when you say at least a week. Hell, they're still to this day playing clips of Rev Wright and Pfeifer.

Well, I've only seen the media playing up the tension that Gramm's comments have caused in the McCain criticism, even showing a tape of McCain extolling Gramm's preeminence in economic matters back when McCain tapped him for the campaign.

Obama used the Gramm gaffe well, "American already has one Dr. Phil...."

Then again, McCain helped himself out by musing that he'd consider Gramm for an ambassadorship to Belarus.

Obama should "scold" him for what? Making a not-so-funny joke that got to a couple of overly sensitive people? I'm sure your uptight sensibilities are the definition of 'class'.

There is no excuse for classless poor taste in any venue. Mac should be expelled from any and all future appearances for the campaign. Is he an idiot? Anyone with taste and brains would not give any material for the GOP to use against their candidate. How stupid can this guy be?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 10:15 PM on 07/12/2008

It wasn't material for the GOP until humorless ninnies whined & reported on it.

The material the GOP will use is all the politically correct whining about a tame comedy bit. Trust me, most Americans hate this kind of prissy authoritarianism, whether it's from the religious right or the PC left. The difference is that when the right does it, they're at least smart enough to target factions in OUR coalition, e.g., gay rights, abortion rights, etc. But when WE do it, we're just as likely to cannibalize ourselves. Which makes us both obnoxious AND stupid. How wonderful to be "liberal."

How would the Republicans use this against Obama? There is no story here. A comedian makes a lame joke that was ill-fitted to the forum. How on Earth is this anything to whine over? Why don't we just cover everyone's eyes and plug their ears so that they can't experience reality and instead live in your politically correct bubble?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 11:52 PM on 07/12/2008

Yes, the most important thing Democrats can do is make sure Republicans never say anything bad about them.

BS

All Democrats have to do is wait for the Reps to say something, then give them the finger either actually or verbally.

That's what Americans want.

Bettysdad, I know that's what I want, unfortunately the presumptive Democratic nominee just wants harmony. I must be old school, I want payback.

The man is a comedian. What else would you expect from him? This incident will further his career and he will go on and perform at some nightclub with a sold out audience, for all will want to know what he will say next. This was probably a publicity stunt. My question is why have comedians or entertainers speak at these events? Oh, I think I know the answer, they draw crowds and make the candidates seem real and hip.

I'm a lifelong pro-feminist liberal Democrat. This kind of political correctness is nauseating, and it has nothing to do with the values or principles we stand for. Make no mistake about it, it's a perfect example of what turned the country off to us for more than a generation, and if we don't stand up to it now, it will guarantee that our term in power this time will be a short one.

My gosh. I am a feminist. But this is political correctness gone awry.

Think about this: If the joke were reversed to say "go ask your father" would people be up in arms? I doubt it. It isn't a gender thing.

There is no story here. The joke was mildly funny, at best. It wasn't the best choice of material for the forum, but it wasn't a scandal in the least. Who cares?

If you invite Bernie Mac, do you not know what is going to come? O's ambiguous remarks after Mr. Mac's exit might have served only to piss off Bernie. It was a meaningless rebuke. Come on, O, either apologize or tell your audience (donors) to get over it and give the man a hand (which is what you should have done). This is another example of the continued disassociation/unattachment Mr. O. shows to all that he should own.

To me, one of the signs that Obama is so young politically is that he never seems to know what reactions will be to various things. Experience teaches you to have foresight and what to anticipate. He always seems surprised to me and then has to scramble to explain or justify or whatever he does everytime something doesn't go the way he thinks it will. He just never sees it coming.

Well if experience teaches foresight, then why didn't Hillary have the foresight (considering she has so much experience) to demand that the votes in FL and MI should count before the primary election started, because you never know, right??

"He always seems surprised to me and then has to scramble to explain or justify whatever he does everytime something doesn't go the way he thinks it will."

Kind of like how Hillary was trying desperately to justify the reason why FL and MI votes should be counted, even when the Democratic party in those states knowingly violated DNC rules? I'm sure she didn't see it coming when Obama surpassed her in the delegate count, she should've thought twice about remaining mum when she could've spoken up and demanded in the beginning that the votes should be counted, right Pup?? ;) Instead, she tried to chance the rules in the middle of the game. What's that called? Oh yeah, CHEATING.

Experience doesn't naturally teach one they have the fore-sight and what to anticipate, it varies with the individual. This constant pouring over everything Obama is turning the HuffPo kids into mini-analysts; rather than informed voters. Politicians do this sort of thing regularly, simply blaming Obama for not reacting perfectly to this event or any other future event is absolutely ridiculous.

ANOTHER example of the Obama Bus Ride . . . you INVITE a COMEDIAN, then chastise him forgiving his trademark standard routine . . Obama did the "FISA" and jumped out of the way and let it go, rather than having the smarts to THANK Bernie and tell the CROWD to" lighten up" . . .

Bernie, I'm sorry you had to endure the "Obama SLip'n'slide Two Step Shuffle" up close - for me it is more of the reason the "Messiah" is NOT . . .
