HUDSON, Wis. — Every presidential campaign has its hitches. For John McCain, they felt more like full-blown lurches this week, with nearly every step forward quickly offset by a misstatement or wisecrack that seemed to blow his message off course.

It was the week McCain hoped to show off his newly focused, smoother-running operation after he rearranged his campaign hierarchy and acknowledged errors in the staging of events and other matters.

But a joke about U.S. cigarettes killing Iranians, criticism of the Social Security program and word that one of his top economic advisers had called the country "a nation of whiners" suffering a "mental recession" undermined the Arizona senator's effort.

Democrat Barack Obama has had his own stumbles recently, but McCain's journey through the key election states of Colorado, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin was bumpy.

McCain said he is not worried.

"I'm very aware that, from time to time, some words of mine will be taken out of context," he told reporters Friday. "I'm not going to change the way our campaign is."

He said the people who attended his town hall meeting earlier that day in Hudson, Wis., "know my plan for the future of America. There was not a question about tobacco to Iran."

Still, the week's events seemed likely to sustain the worries of some Republicans who cringed when McCain gave a major speech in June before a garishly green background, and who scratched their heads during his recent visit to Mexico and Colombia, home to few U.S. voters.

Story continues below

A brief recap of McCain's week:

_Monday: At an otherwise well-received town hall event in Denver, McCain described the Social Security system as it currently operates as "an absolute disgrace" and said "it's got to be fixed." Liberal groups seized on the comment. McCain later said the disgrace is that young workers will not benefit from the program if long-term financing problems are not addressed. He vowed to work with Democrats and Republicans to do so.

_Tuesday: After ordering a cheesesteak sandwich at a popular Pittsburgh hangout, McCain invited reporters' questions. Asked about surprisingly large shipments of cigarettes to Iran, where U.S. exports are discouraged, McCain quipped: "Maybe that's a way of killing them." The joke seemed less funny a day later, when he somberly criticized Iran's test-firing of missiles. Bloggers, cable news shows and others replayed the sound bite repeatedly.

_Wednesday: McCain campaigned in Pennsylvania, calling for more pressure on Iran, and talked more about Social Security in Ohio, but avoided misteps.

_Thursday: In a Detroit suburb, McCain fielded questions from a partly skeptical audience of autoworkers. Things got worse with news of the "nation of whiners" comment by former Sen. Phil Gramm, a top economic adviser to McCain. McCain, who spent the week highlighting the public's concern about the economy, quickly tried to distance himself from his former colleague and longtime friend. "Phil Gramm does not speak for me. I speak for me," McCain said.

_Friday: The calmest day of McCain's week nonetheless included one of those odd moments that cause some supporters to wonder about his political dexterity. A woman at the Hudson forum denounced the Democratic Party and asked McCain if he would "hammer away at their socialist, Marxist philosophy." His "yes" response drew wild applause.

McCain later hailed the importance of bipartisanship, and even praised Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, the Massachusetts liberal. Still, his breezy acceptance of the woman's description seemed at odds with his bid to woo Democrats dubious about Obama and resentful of Hillary Rodham Clinton's defeat.

Perhaps McCain's trickiest problem is that his favorite campaign format _ freewheeling town halls where unscreened attendees can ask him anything _ make it almost impossible for him to focus on one or two key themes.

Worse, they allow anti-McCain activists to challenge or even criticize him before TV cameras, as happened several times last week.

McCain says presidential contenders should routinely subject themselves to the toughest questioning that reporters and voters can offer.

"I'm very happy," he told reporters Friday. He said town hall participants never ask about his campaign shake-ups or the kinds of quips and gaffes that preoccupy cable news. "Their questions are how they can have a better future, educate their kids, keep their jobs, have health care."

"I'm not going to change, because I think I made a lot of progress today," McCain said after the Wisconsin forum.

The only positive thing to come out of the Bush presidency, is that America has learned to get a really fast read on what is STUPID. Poor John McCain, stupidity is dripping off of him, and as much as we would like to look the other way, out of respect, we can't do it. America can no longer tolerate stupidity, and so McCain doesn't have a chance in this election for that reason alone.
4th from the bottom of his class of 899. We can't afford to look the other way a second time.

It would be an incredible week for any candidate - but the one issue that should have shut down the whole campaign is what Gramm said.

GRAMM WAS HIS CHIEF ECONOMIC ADVISER, not some distant surrogate (which is how it's been played). If that didn't kill McCain's chances - nothing will.

I am more convinced than ever that the Rethuglicans will steal this election from 0bama.

Case in point just watching HuffPo this week, moreover the comments on HuffPo. The left just does not get how to win elections. 0bama has flack coming from the media, the right and even the left. When I see over 3000 comments on the discord in the Democratic Party and only a little over 200 comments on the absolutely horrendous week McBush has had that is a huge warning sign. When I also see that the right is engineering town hall meetings to attack 0bama and the left cannot even organize a fire drill that is another problem.

I read the commentaries on Real Clear Politics every day and while the left is all over the place half attacking 0bama and half treating McBush with kit gloves that's a huge issue. The right has it down to a science, they attack 0bama with a vengeance every single day.

I hope everyone enjoys four more year of Boosh under McBush, because I'm outta here because if McBush is elected this country is doomed. This past week just shows what a disaster his presidency would be yet he is rising in the polls.

This post will probably not even get through because the left will moderate it out of existence.

Maybe the LEFT isn't really the LEFT at all when it comes to a half White-man. I've seen some ugly things from the so-called LEFT these days.

I have been saying the same thing. Even several hosts on Air America are saying lay off 0.ba.ma. I don't know if the Dems who are bashing him over FISA are young, politically naive or just plain stupid. But they do not have a clue. When he entered this process he had 3 strikes against - HUGE, HUGE, HUGE strike - RACE; LARGE strike - YOUTH; LARGE strike - PERCEIVED INEXPERIENCE.

Now lets add WEAK AGAINST TERRORISTS; which the repuks and many indies would have tagged him with had be voted against FISA. I read where at least 60% of Amerikans don't know what FISA is. Compare that to about 10% who do know and and about 5% who have problems with his vote. If you want the man in office - LAY OFF!!

I understand the frustration over the FISA issue and expressed my concern but the left needs to put things into perspective.

If you hate war - Vote for 0bama.
If you hate a candidate that would rescind Habeas Corpus - Vote for 0bama.
If you hate a system that funnels money to the rich - Vote for 0bama.
If you believe in a woman's right to chose - Vote for 0bama.
If you believe women should have equal pay for equal work - Vote for 0bama.
If you believe in reigning in unfettered capitalism - Vote for 0bama.
If you believe in affordable health care for all - Vote for 0bama.
If you think your economic concerns are real not whining - Vote for 0bama.
If you want a comprehensive energy policy rather than drill drill drill and gimmicks - Vote for 0bama.

You could not have too more distinct candidates or even more importantly have candidates with more distinct positions on every policy than between 0bama and McBush. But people are allowing themselves to be distracted. The over 3000 comments on the subject of Democratic unity is the most distressing sign that the left is doomed to lose this election. Seeing all this Democrat on Democrat violence just makes me sick.

Your not the only one that is heavily moderated.... as for the rest of what you said.... You can read as many post that get through as you want, but you don't know the people who are posting or what their actual agendas are.... or what they really represent... This site and others represent a very small slice of the real, and unreal world... Come August... you will see where Dems stand, and in Nov you will see where the country stands....

In other words.... step away from the computer for a while.... turn off the MSM, and take a wee holiday to refresh your head...........

Fortunately football season is coming so I'll have another distraction to avoid making my heart condition worse with the coverage of this election by the MSM. I'm down to watching Chris Mathews once in a while and Countdown. I cannot watch any other news without by heart rate getting out of hand.

On last comment HuffPo use to be a safe place to go but even now they have an agenda of their own. I think they HuffPo is doing a major power play to control 0bama. I never saw a site trying to tell a candidate what he should and should not do as much as they have in the last couple of weeks. They helped enable the flip flop label to stick to 0bama when the only flip flop he had was on FISA. The other issues were nonsense where 0bama has been totally consistent like on Iraq and women's right to chose but even HuffPo bought into the right wing spin.

The polls now show an even heat. In the end it will be a 50/50 race as the last two elections have been.

This country never elects a Democrat for president. The only exception since Kennedy is Clinton because of Perot splitting the Republicans, and Carter after Ford pardoned Nixon.

John McCain is dangerous - he has no idea what his platform is, he panders to whatever crowd he's speaking to, and, depending on which flip-flops he's wearing that day, hems and haws and scratches his head when asked about his voting record, and has no idea of the world around him.
I honestly think he's demented.
Question of the day: do you really want his finger on the button? I surely don't - and I also do not want him, or his party, to have control of the White House.

I can't wait for Keith to get back tomorrow and hear what he has to say about all this. He's gone a whole week, and look what happens! All these great news stories and no Keith to keep us up to date on McB's latest gaffe's or O's latest supposed screw ups over voting for FISA and about allowing HillBill as VP.

I don't know if KO can go it alone against the onslaught of the right wing and corporate media. He took a well deserved vacation but on the worse week possible. I really think McBush won the week because he had his worse week ever and no one cared. Instead we here about discourse in the Democratic Party and the right wing blasting 0bama about having his family give a harmless interview. I really am starting to think we are going to be stuck with McBush.

I agree with you.... if O had done even 1/10th of the gaffes that McC has done, people would have raked him over the coals.... but the old guy gets a free pass... it boggles my mind truly.... I don't think the repubs have a snowballs chance in heck come the election... but I can see why people might not feel that way now....

I used to say he was just old and stupid. Now I'm wondering if we're seeing signs of early Alzheimer's in the candidate. The puzzlement and confusion he exhibits are troubling.

That logic is flawed.
I don't think it's either, I think they are banking on the majority of uninformed voters, like the Clinton's did.
It took the Clinton's a long way!

They forgot his squirming and non-answers regarding his surrogate Carla Fiorini regarding birth control pills.
Obviously, he is afraid to go on record condoning birth control pills.
He's been coached that his Anti-choice stance isn't one he should bring up, and he so he steered clear of even birth control.

Obama is going to be the next President of the US in January 2009. People can huff (no pun intended) and puff all they want but the bottom line is, especially for Clinton supporters, they have to vote Obama, or they will suffer (these are not stupid people). The racist rednecks will continue to vote against their personal interests by voting republican (Hagee and Parsley love the sheep mentality of bible thumpers). Real republicans (defined as white and rich people) are laughing at the stupidity of rednecks and evangelicals, but they love their vote.

I feel McCain never knows what he is talking about. Even at his town hall events it sounds like McCain is just talking off the top of head and playing fast and loose with the facts.

All that Obama does is highly scrutinized by the media, all that McCain does is swept under the rug by the media. Polls will be more in line after the conventions and we get closer to the election.

If we push McCain's constant lies and flip flops with the media and go out and host events in support of Barack to help get out the truth, we will see Obama in the WH in a sure landslide.
