American actress Angelina Jolie poses at the photo call for the film "Changeling" at the 61st International film festival in Cannes, southern France, on May 20, 2008. Angelina Jolie's doctor says the actress has given birth to a girl and a boy. Dr. Michel Sussmann told The Associated Press Sunday July 13, 2008 that Jolie, the babies and Jolie's partner, Brad Pitt, "are doing marvelously well." Sussmann confirmed a report in the local Nice Matin newspaper that Jolie gave birth to a boy, Knox Leon, and a girl, Vivienne Marcheline, by Cesarian section on Saturday night. NICE, France — Brad Pitt was emotional but calm, Angelina Jolie laughed and chatted. The world's most famous celebrity couple were joined in emotion during the birth of their twins _ a boy and a girl _ and all "are doing marvelously well," the doctor who delivered the babies in a seaside hospital on the French Riviera said Sunday.

The newborns _ Knox Leon and Vivienne Marcheline, born one minute apart Saturday evening _ are the ultimate million-dollar babies, with experts estimating their first photos will fetch a fortune.

"In the celebrity world, it seems to be the double second coming," said Darryn Lyons, owner of Big Pictures, a photo agency in London.

For now, mother, father and newborns are resting out of the public eye on the fifth floor of the Lenval hospital, behind blue mirrored windows that provide sweeping views of Nice's sun-drenched beaches, but specially treated to deflect the prying lenses of paparazzi.

Jolie's obstetrician, Dr. Michel Sussmann, said the 44-year-old Pitt was at Jolie's side during the delivery, looking on as the doctor performed a Caesarean section to deliver Knox, weighing in at slightly over 5 pounds, and Vivienne, who weighed 5 pounds.

"He was my assistant," Sussmann joked.

"He was very happy. ... The emotion was very strong for him," Sussmann told reporters on the hospital steps. "I felt the emotion of both the mother and the father. Angelina Jolie was speaking, was laughing with her husband. They were happy."

"The mother, the babies, the father are doing marvelously well," he said.

Sussmann said the Caesarean was moved forward from its originally planned date "for medical reasons" so the babies could be born "in the best conditions." The doctor did not elaborate.

He said Jolie, 33, is expected to stay in the hospital for a few more days and that she now needs rest. The four other Jolie-Pitt children _ Maddox, 6; Pax, 4; Zahara, 3; and Shiloh, 2 _ have not yet seen their new sister and brother, he said.

The doctor said he believed the baby girl's middle name was chosen in honor of Jolie's mother, actress Marcheline Bertrand, who died in January 2007 after a 7 1/2-year battle with cancer.

News of the births attracted a small crowd of fans hoping to snap a photo of Pitt _ or any of their celebrity friends stopping by to pay a visit. None appeared, but the mayor of Nice delivered the twin's birth certificates, which he later displayed to reporters, with the family's approval, showing Pitt's scrawling WBP, for his full name William Brad Pitt.

"The father is having one of the happiest moments of his life, like any father, especially when they have the joy of having two children from such a wonderful wife as Angelina Jolie," Mayor Christian Estrosi said after the brief official visit, which spared Pitt the gauntlet of paparazzi that would accompany any trip to City Hall.

"The mother is doing fine. She is smiling a lot. She is as happy as the father," Estrosi said.

The twins' arrival has spurred a rash of speculation about the price of the first "official" snaps.

Nice Matin, the hometown daily in the Riviera city in the south of France, put the worth of the twins' photos at more than $11 million. It first broke news of the birth and reported Sunday that the couple have sold the rights for the first photo of their newly expanded family to a U.S. publication, which it did not name, and that the proceeds would go to charity.

"I've never known a set of pictures to be worth this amount of money," said Lyons, the owner of Big Pictures. He estimated that the twins' official photos will be worth between $15 million and $20 million.

The only other photos that "would possibly come that close is Britney Spears giving birth to an alien," he said.

Veteran London-based celebrity publicist Max Clifford estimated the first photos could fetch 10 million pounds _ roughly €12 million or $20 million, "which would make it the biggest baby deal ever."

"These kind of pictures sell lots of magazines," he said. "It's a 10-million-pound ($20 million) gamble as to whether the ends justify the means. But obviously it's a very calculated risk because whoever lands the photos will have a lot of experience with the popularity of mum and dad."

Paparazzi have been following the couple through southern France since the Cannes film festival in May, snapping shots of the family on an outing to Eze beach and sticking close as they set up household in Correns, 60 miles from Nice. But so far the couple has evaded the paparazzi when it counted, arriving undetected at the Lenval clinic two weeks before the birth.

I am the oldest of six children in my family and the Jolie-Pitts have my sincere congratulations. If those children enjoy each other and have as much fun together as my family did, they will have fond and great memories of their youth, as I have. This is worth more than gold.

If they stick to their announced plan of action, the next adopted child will be African (or of African descent). Any bets on how long before they announce the next (7th) addition to the family?

I know what you mean.

I wish they both would back out of the spotlight now, & concentrate on quietly & responsibly taking very good care of all of their kids (inc. the babies, of which there are 4 now with the twins).

But frankly, I'm afraid it won't be long before they decide to surprize/shock the public once again with adopting another child (maybe from India or China next time? LOL) or getting pregnant in another year or two ... it is almost like an addiction. You are right to wonder, CK.

Let's hope this famous newer mother is flexible and grateful enough to accept good help, and is content with the many riches/gifts God or the gods or nature, etc. have given her. Jolie is indeed very, very lucky, but (arguably) not very smart to push herself, Pitt & her kids constantly into the spotlight, I feel.

They really are so lucky. The mother (Jolie) was able to afford excellent prenatal and obstetric care for her twin pregnancy, and was probably delivered prior to 40 weeks gestation by CS because her doctor determined the twins were sufficiently developed to survive OK.

My heart goes out to these twins parents of newborns (both DZ and MM) who aren't so lucky, and who try very hard to get the rest they need before delivering twins ... but cannot afford extended hospital stays, like celebrities Jolie & Lopez & Roberts, etc. & have to work to support their families.

Sometimes, too, once the 'honeymoon period' is over and the new mother (Jolie in this case) is getting her weight down & trying to feed two crying infants & dealing with incredible hormonal drops that can result in problems w/ postpartum depression, it will be SO tough ... even with skilled nannies & eager extended family.

I hope that Jolie take really good care of her fraternal twins, and is flexible and grateful enough to let others help her care for the kids. She & William Brad Pitt have several babies at home now; and it wouldn't be easy for anyone in those circumstances. Let's hope they do their very best! Thanks.

Just caught my typo here:

DZ/dizygotic twinning is for fraternals twins ... but it's MZ for monozygotic (not MM) for identical twins. There's also a large increase in fraternal twinning rates due to fertility treatments/drugs. That may have been the case with Angelina Jolie (as there was speculation this was how she became pregnant the first time around, with her baby Shiloh). If this were the case, though, I'm not sure she'd own up to it.

This is a tired, old ploy, hope. Let it go. It's not your business who read what, when, or why any more than it is mine. Just be happy for these people. The mother was extremely fortunate to have twins with good birth weights (at least 5 lbs. each), in part due to being able to afford high quality maternity care & being taken care of in an attentive, excellent hospital! Not all twin births turn out as successfully, as this one did. That's the unfortunate reality ... take a look at mortality rates among twins versus singletons (single baby births) sometimes. It's frightening. And not all women in the U.S. or elsewhere can afford to take time off from work or older children or various obligations to go on extended bed rest ... or to be hospitalized for several days ahead of giving birth. Jolie & her partner are very, very lucky people. They are not to be put on a pedestal, though ... anymore than other celebrity parents like Jennifer Lopez and her husband.

Wonderful! Congratulations to all.

Why in France?

Maybe, because most in health care agree that France, yes, France!, has the best health care system in the world. No one in France can lose their life savings and/or home due to a health care need. There are no uninsured. We in the US can choke on this fact along with our 'Freedom fries.'

If somebody is as rich as those two, it doesn't matter where the birth takes place. They can bring in the best doctors money can buy. Shiloh was born in Namibia, of all places. Perhaps they go abroad to give birth because the adopted kids are all from "someplace else." This way the biological ones won't feel less special.
What I'm curious about is why all the boys' names end in x.

Good observation & question. I didn't catch that particular trend. Makes me wonder, too. At least now ~ as Kathy Lee Gifford said on NBC this morning ~ everyone can now 'get on with our lives.' The Jolie/Pitt family drama is finally over (at least for the present ... until, that is, they decide once again to push themselves back into the celebrity spotlight over another interesting development between these two movie stars). Ha, ha.

A couple has their babies. The experience is awesome on a personal level. The miracle of life. It happens every second of every day all over the world. We seem to think, though, that these two infants born thousands of miles away to people we don't know are different. More special. ok, their parents are rich and pretty. They made a few movies and done a few nice things. So?

I'm glad they're healthy and wish them well. But I bet my grandkids will be cuter and smarter. And they'll be able to live normal lives.

I'm with you, Mort. I've never understood why childbearing causes such a fuss. I also say, so what? And I'm an Obama supporter.

As for the why France question from other folks...my theory is that they're going to try to birth or adopt a baby on every continent in the world!

In honor of the happy couple, I may have to rent "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" for the umpteenth time.

John Smith: [at marriage counseling] Ask us the sex question.
Jane Smith: [whispers] John.
John Smith: [softly with his fingers out for ten] Ten.

They have chosen really contrived and/or ugly names for most of their kids. Maddux and Knox Leon really grate on the ears. But Vivienne Marcheline is truly a lovely name.
