New Yorker Cover Shows "Muslim" Barack With Gun-Slinging Michelle Obama

The New Yorker says it's satire. It certainly will be candy for cable news.

At a press availability Sunday afternoon in San Diego, Senator Obama was asked, according to the diligent Maria Gavrilovic of CBS News: "The upcoming issue of the New Yorker, the July 21st issue, has a picture of you, depicting you and your wife on the cover. Have you seen it? If not, I can show it to you on my computer. It shows your wife Michelle with an Afro and an AK 47 and the two of you doing the fist bump with you in a sort of turban-type thing on top. I wondered if you've seen it or if you want to see it or if you have a response to it?"

Obama (shrugs incredulously): "I have no response to that."

The magazine explains at the start of its news release previewing the issue: "On the cover of the July 21, 2008, issue of the The New Yorker, in 'The Politics of Fear,' artist Barry Blitt satirizes the use of scare tactics and misinformation in the Presidential election to derail Barack Obama's campaign."

Obama should've just said "it's typical of the kind of hijinks you see during the silly season of presidential elections but I would've expected better from The New Yorker. Even if it's satire, it seems tone deaf.'

I am ashamed of the New Yorker owner publisher and managers for putting this kind of trash out under their name in this country. Who do they think they are putting what amounts to lies and fear factors in print on the very cover of the magazine. I wish that people would boycott this magazine and send letters tot he editor to respond to this obvious slander and kisrepresentation of who the Obama's are. If anyone would sue it would be huge as this is way over the top hate filled!!! I will never in my life buy another New Yorker and those friends of mine who subscribe I will ak them to take their names off of the subscriptions and mail them to the white house.

This cartoon would have been brilliant INSIDE the magazine, accompanying an article about how the neocons and Fox are spreading lies about the Obamas.

On the cover, alone, it is an ink-blot test. You see what you already believe.

But it doesn't even do that well. I believe, of course, these images of the Obamas are lies, but my first reaction was not hahaha - it was OMG the media is spreading these lies. And I'm a New Yorker fan from way back.

I'm aghast and shocked at this cover. I thought the New Yorker was a liberal magazine? if they think this is funny as in exaggerating the rights portrayal of the Obama's, this is NOT the right way to parody the racist right wingers who believe this is what the Obama's really are.

It was a terrible decision to make this their cover. I suggest everyone who has a subscription to the New Yorker cancel their subscriptions and email them to communicate their displeasure of this attempt at "humor".

remember how back in the day ithe advertising mantra was "sex sells?" that stopped being true awhile ago -- everything is so awash in sex.. now the new idiom is the "manufactured controvers­y".. from nooses on the cover of golf magazines to this, the magazines will apologize profusely, but then experience their highest selling issue ever..

luckily, the new yorker is a total bore and any bump in sales for this cover will be short-lived.
