Troops In Iraq

The Washington Post reports that the U.S. and Iraq have abandoned attempts to forge a long-term security agreement. The focus is now on a "bridge document" that would provide for basic military operations after the UN mandate expires at the end of this year, and it would fall to the next administration to deal with any extended security agreement:

U.S. and Iraqi negotiators have abandoned efforts to conclude a comprehensive agreement governing the long-term status of U.S troops in Iraq before the end of the Bush presidency, according to senior U.S. officials, effectively leaving talks over an extended U.S. military presence there to the next administration.

In place of the formal status-of-forces agreement negotiators had hoped to complete by July 31, the two governments are now working on a "bridge" document, more limited in both time and scope, that would allow basic U.S. military operations to continue beyond the expiration of a U.N. mandate at the end of the year.

The failure of months of negotiations over the more detailed accord -- blamed on both the Iraqi refusal to accept U.S. terms and the complexity of the task -- deals a blow to the Bush administration's plans to leave in place a formal military architecture in Iraq that could last for years.

Although President Bush has repeatedly rejected calls for a troop withdrawal timeline, "we are talking about dates," acknowledged one U.S. official close to the negotiations. Iraqi political leaders "are all telling us the same thing. They need something like this in there. . . . Iraqis want to know that foreign troops are not going to be here forever."

The increasing need for more troops in Afghanistan to combat a resurgent Taliban may force the Bush Administration to accelerate the rate of troop withdrawal from Iraq:

The Bush administration is considering the withdrawal of additional combat forces from Iraq beginning in September, according to administration and military officials, raising the prospect of a far more ambitious plan than expected only months ago.

Such a withdrawal would be a striking reversal from the nadir of the war in 2006 and 2007.

One factor in the consideration is the pressing need for additional American troops in Afghanistan, where the Taliban and other fighters have intensified their insurgency and inflicted a growing number of casualties on Afghans and American-led forces there.

More American and allied troops died in Afghanistan than in Iraq in May and June, a trend that has continued this month...

...The desire to move more quickly reflects the view of many in the Pentagon who want to ease the strain on the military but also to free more troops for Afghanistan and potentially other missions.

The Washington Post reports that the U.S. and Iraq have abandoned attempts to forge a long-term security agreement. The focus is now on a "bridge document" that would provide for basic military opera...

Uh, --- We never had an agreement to begin with.

Uh, --- This said the DEAL, not the formal agreement, was abandoned.

You have to have a deal before you can progress to the formal agreement.

So, remind me, what was the point of invading Iraq. No WMD. No al Queda (until the US took over the country). No oil law. And soon no US troops to protect the oil companies when they try to exploit their meaningless oil contracts.

Who won the Iraq war? Iran. No doubt about it.

Don't worry, we'll probably have to re-invade in a decade or so when the democracy we established goes 'commie' and nationalizes their oil .

And never mind that Saudi commies also have nationalized oil.

I agree. The Shia dominated government of Iraq has decided that their long term interests lie with Shias in Iran rather than "crusaders" from the west.

We had better get serious and busy on independence from foreign oil........yesterday. With the control of oil production from Iraq added to that from Iran and Venezuela, whose leadership hates us coupled with increased demand around the globe; we may soon face a "perfect storm" of shrinking oil supply.

We may get $10 a gallon gas with or without bombing Iran.

This means defeat for Dubya and the Neo-Cons. They won't admit it of course and they can still bomb Iran.. But they lost.

Prediction: tomorrow Rush will be on the radio, explaining how Iraq's refusal to knuckle under to whatever the US was demanding they do is all the fault of us whining peace-niks and we really need to elect McCain to keep the war fires burning.

Nothing the prez has said thus far re Iraq has been credible so I'll not get too carried away with this pronouncement beyond saying the Iraqis clearly prefer to deal with the next president than with the current one on this issue. Good for them for refusing to be bullied.

Good news. We don't have to waste money building permanent bases complete with movie theatres, night clubs and golf courses in Iraq. Maybe we can pay for decent health care for veterans suffering from the physical and mental disabilities of this war.

With the help of this nation Israel will attack Iran and the democrat party leaders are very silent about starting that war. They are not silent about their support for Israel even if it means bombing Iran, but the liberals do not say a word about that because they are hypocrites and refuse to admit their leaders are bought and paid for by aipac.

You seem to be a one trick pony...or at least HAVE a one trick pony which you are beating to death with a stick.

There is much more at stake here than AIPAC and it is much more convoluted than it appears (and it appears quite bad enough, thank you very much), so you might want to open your mind and eyes and look around.

If you want to find the real villain behind the curtain, think military/industrial complex and then ask yourself the big question..."Who benefits?"

"...starting that war."?

As long as I've been around, the United States was a country known for ENDING wars, not STARTING them. Bush of course, has proven that no longer applies, we start wars whenever and wherever we please for whatever reasons we choose to make up. And not to be too blunt about it, but cowards START wars, heroes END them.

Someday people will realize that "modern" warfare is, by definition, the slaughter of innocents. It is industrialized murder, even when it's justified, because far more innocent ALWAYS die than guilty. Iraq's ratio of civilian to military deaths is between 23 and 300 to 1, depending on the sources you choose to believe. 23 to 1 is 96.65% civilian deaths, while 300 to 1 is 99.66% civilian deaths. Either way, it's slaughter. 23 to 1 is based on figures from IBC, while the 300 to 1 figure is from a statistical study from last year that put the total Iraqi deaths at 1.2 million.

Civilians ALWAYS pay the price of "modern" war with theirs, and their families, lives. In many case, entire genetic lines have been wiped out...as in, entire families murdered...in this, the latest version of "modern" war, aka butchery.
