Bush Administration Sending Senior Envoy To Switzerland Talks With Iran

The Bush administration will send a senior envoy to international talks this weekend with Iran about its nuclear program, in what U.S. officials described as a "one-time deal," designed to demonstrate a serious desire to resolve the impasse over Tehran's nuclear ambitions.

In a significant departure from longstanding policy, Undersecretary of State William J. Burns will join a scheduled meeting in Geneva between European Union foreign policy chief Javier Solana and top Iranian nuclear negotiator Saeed Jalili, according to a senior State Department official.

They're sending a "senior envoy." Yeah. Well, ORDINARILY in such a situation - to avert war, etc - you send someone in Condi's position, Sec of State. In the past a Madaline Albright would have done it. Instead they send in the second-string.

Frankly, I think this is because they all know Condi's not up to the job.

European officials hailed the news that Burns would come to Geneva as a breakthrough, one that sends a clear message to Iran that the international community is interested in negotiating a solution to the nuclear impasse.

I fear that BUSH=MCCAIN's "appeasement" is symbolism ... not SUBSTANCE.
