News circulated fast late Tuesday afternoon that back in 1986, during his initial run for the Senate, John McCain allegedly told a crude joke about rape involving a woman's affection for an ape.

The story, which was reprised on the blog Rum, Romanism and Rebellion before being blasted out by Think Progress, goes like this: In an appearance before the National League of Cities and Towns in Washington D.C., McCain supposedly asked the crowd if they had heard "the one about the woman who is attacked on the street by a gorilla, beaten senseless, raped repeatedly and left to die?"

The punch line: "When she finally regains consciousness and tries to speak, her doctor leans over to hear her sigh contently and to feebly ask, "Where is that marvelous ape?"

Eeeshh. The joke, as one can imagine, did not go over well with various women's groups, which responded with indignation. But the McCain campaign denied that he had ever said the offensive gag.

"It's pretty obvious to us that this is a politically motivated sideshow," Torrie Clarke, McCain's spokeswoman at the time, said back in 1986. Till this day it has never been proven definitively true or false whether the Senator ever said the line.

The Huffington Post reached out to the original reporter in that story, Norma Coile (who after talking to multiple sources months after it was told wrote about the response to the rape joke in the Tuscon Citizen) to find out if she thought it was true.

"I'm not sure exactly what the wording was of the joke, but something was said. Some joke involving a rape and ape was said. Enough women repeated it to me at the time and the McCain campaign had a non-denial denial," said Coile, now with the Arizona Daily Star. "It came after his 'Seizure World' joke, in which he referred to the [retirement community] Leisure World as Seizure World... I just think it reinforced this idea that John McCain is humor-challenged. Whatever his qualities, he seems to have a tin ear for how these jokes will go over."

Indeed, while this anecdote occurred more than 20 years ago, McCain has occasionally found himself with his foot in his mouth throughout his time in public office. Back in 1998, he odiously declared before a GOP crowd: "Why is Chelsea Clinton so ugly? Because her father is Janet Reno."

More recently he joked that it might be good for the United States to keep exporting cigarettes to Iran as cancer would prove an effective weapon against that country's citizens.

But venturing into the extremely sensitive subject of rape and humor is not something that - even 22 years later - will endear McCain to the women voters his campaign has sought to recruit. And organizations in Arizona that weighed in on that 1986 line see it as another example of the Senator not being sensitive to female issues and concerns.

"I don't think we can say one example like that is indicative of someone's character. But certainly I think John McCain has made lots of quotes where he says jokes like that," said Linda Barter, head of the Arizona Women's Political Caucus, which objected to McCain's joke at the time. "Our organizational purpose, however, is to increase the number of elected and appointed women, and we support pro-choice women, so there is certainly a division there. John McCain has not been pro-choice or supportive of issues related to women's reproductive health."

Unfortunately, I think McCain's (lack of) sense of humor is just an attempt to appeal to so-called "regular guys". Our culture has really gone overboard on Bad Taste humor - I'm sure you've seen the kinds of tasteless T-shirts many people (especially young people) wear these days. And the excuse for being tasteless? "It's just a joke!"

Welcome to the Dumbing Down of America. If not the world.

Did you hear the one about McCain and Bush making hot monkey love?

Do you suppose Angela Merkel prefers neck rubs or rape jokes at her Summit negotiations & cocktail parties?

I'm waiting for the KKK jokes.. because the looks on the faces of the *other civilized nations' leaders* would be priceless.

He's obviously a misogynist whether or not he told the joke (which it sounds as if he at least told some variant of). Look at his policies on abortion and birth control; remember that he called his wife the "c" word in front of witnesses; consider the Chelsea Clinton remark; and remember how he cheated on and left his first wife after her accident (and lied about it). No self-respecting woman should vote for him, and no man who cares about women should either. Let's face it: the composition of the Supreme Court is one of the most consequential implications of this election, and a McAss court would not be favorable to women.

"[McCain] gets in I get out of the country."

Yeah, yeah, we have heard all of that garbage talk from over-paid and under-intelligenced fools before. They proved to be liars then, just as you will continue to live happily under a McCain administration if he is elected.

Question to the world: Why do such inane people make such ridiculously stupid, insipid "threats" to take what marbles they have, and flee the country? And then, why do they stay to enjoy the largess of America rather than having the integrity to do what they promised and live elsewhere? It says something about their character.

"Till this day it has never been proven definitively true or false whether the Senator ever said the line."

Tell me and the world, if The Huffington Post is "brave" enough to admit that it has no way of knowing the truth of the matter, how does it have the unmitigated gall to even repeat and perpetuate it? By doing so, it grants the rubbish its imprimatur, and thereby impugns its own legitimacy. It may be a hackneyed phrase, but nonetheless true, that the truth never catches up with the lie.

In 1953, I began my career as a newspaper reporter and editor. Had any hack submitted such garbage through most of my career, they would find themselves jobless. But the respectable profession of "journalist" has changed, and now, anything goes.

Exactly - if Huffpo runs daily articles deploring the crass innuendoes leveled against the Dem candidates , perhaps they should consider their own integrity.
Even if he said it - if this is the worst ammunition we have , we look pretty pitiful.

No, you would look pitiful . . . no pretty in there . . . Obama has daughters and a lovely wife he would never refer to as a c**t... not in private, not in public. Nor would he ever allow a man. much less a candidate for the office of President, speak about the joy his daughters would get out of being rape victims.

Get a clue.

#1 Dartagnan - I agree, however, if that's the thing that can keep him out of the white house - run with it. I hope I'm right when I say Obama wins in a landslide, however, if jokes from 20+ years ago keep Mcidiot out - use it.

Oh, come on -- we're dredging up dumb jokes that he might have told more than 20 years ago?!?

There are dozens of reasons for voting against John McBush but this is NOT one of them.

Except that in this case, it shows that his recent spurt of inappropriate comments isn't just a new thing. It isn't because he's getting older, or because of the stress of campaigning, or any of the other excuses that people might want to trot out for him. He's been "inappropriate" for years.

In the matter of bad taste, or bad judgement , or bad behavior, it is amazing that he gets away with it. Where is responsibility and accountability? Clearly, someone has been following behind, cleaning up the mess as after the elephant in the parade. Whether gaffs or graft, persons of privilege seem to get a free pass. And now we propose to test again how foolproof our country is.

Dear Mr. McCain:

Please note: 1) Bestiality "jokes" are never appropriate; and 2) rape and violence are never funny.

I did not think it would ever be necessary to tell someone else this, but apparently it is.
05:32 PM on 07/18/2008
He doesn't care what you (or I) think. This is the man who called his wife a c word in front of other people. He is deranged. It boggles my mind that anyone even takes his attempt at a candidacy with any seriousness.

If I were a billionaire, I would run my dog for POTUS. I would release ridiculous quotes attributed to him every day ("a bone in every pot"). I would take him to town hall type events and have him perform tricks for everyone. I would pay TIME and NEWSWEEK millions to put his picture on the cover. And, sadly, he could beat M c C a i n in a debate.

McCain's humor is only funny to the bigoted, elitist white males who are his base. I was raised an elitist white male, but fortunately taught not to be a bigot. I am voting for Obama. Too make fun a of a young girl like Chelsea Clinton just shows the juvenile, frat boy mentality of this man. He is far too old to be making such tasteless jokes.

HuffPost,

You called this wrong. Rape is not a joke in any context.
