I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Aperape

News circulated fast late Tuesday afternoon that back in 1986, during his initial run for the Senate, John McCain allegedly told a crude joke about rape involving a woman's affection for an ape.

The story, which was reprised on the blog Rum, Romanism and Rebellion before being blasted out by Think Progress, goes like this: In an appearance before the National League of Cities and Towns in Washington D.C., McCain supposedly asked the crowd if they had heard "the one about the woman who is attacked on the street by a gorilla, beaten senseless, raped repeatedly and left to die?"

The punch line: "When she finally regains consciousness and tries to speak, her doctor leans over to hear her sigh contently and to feebly ask, "Where is that marvelous ape?"

Eeeshh. The joke, as one can imagine, did not go over well with various women's groups, which responded with indignation. But the McCain campaign denied that he had ever said the offensive gag.

"It's pretty obvious to us that this is a politically motivated sideshow," Torrie Clarke, McCain's spokeswoman at the time, said back in 1986. Till this day it has never been proven definitively true or false whether the Senator ever said the line.

The Huffington Post reached out to the original reporter in that story, Norma Coile (who after talking to multiple sources months after it was told wrote about the response to the rape joke in the Tuscon Citizen) to find out if she thought it was true.

"I'm not sure exactly what the wording was of the joke, but something was said. Some joke involving a rape and ape was said. Enough women repeated it to me at the time and the McCain campaign had a non-denial denial," said Coile, now with the Arizona Daily Star. "It came after his 'Seizure World' joke, in which he referred to the [retirement community] Leisure World as Seizure World... I just think it reinforced this idea that John McCain is humor-challenged. Whatever his qualities, he seems to have a tin ear for how these jokes will go over."

Indeed, while this anecdote occurred more than 20 years ago, McCain has occasionally found himself with his foot in his mouth throughout his time in public office. Back in 1998, he odiously declared before a GOP crowd: "Why is Chelsea Clinton so ugly? Because her father is Janet Reno."

More recently he joked that it might be good for the United States to keep exporting cigarettes to Iran as cancer would prove an effective weapon against that country's citizens.

But venturing into the extremely sensitive subject of rape and humor is not something that - even 22 years later - will endear McCain to the women voters his campaign has sought to recruit. And organizations in Arizona that weighed in on that 1986 line see it as another example of the Senator not being sensitive to female issues and concerns.

"I don't think we can say one example like that is indicative of someone's character. But certainly I think John McCain has made lots of quotes where he says jokes like that," said Linda Barter, head of the Arizona Women's Political Caucus, which objected to McCain's joke at the time. "Our organizational purpose, however, is to increase the number of elected and appointed women, and we support pro-choice women, so there is certainly a division there. John McCain has not been pro-choice or supportive of issues related to women's reproductive health."

I want to thank everyone who caught McCin with his "backside" showing. The very thought I even considered him worthy makes me ill, but my late Mother who lived in Arizona quickly sraightened me out. Thanks Mom and Rest in Peace.

Bibbo It's interesting how you conservatives think a joke is a joke until the joke becomes about you. Say did you hear the one about your daddy and the sheep. It sure explains how come you're so white and fuzzy. I have more for you if you like jokes so much.

The man is a sadistic woman hater. Everything he says and does shows his total dislike for women. His wife is just window dressing. What a sorry individual he truly is with all his lying and not able to remember anything supposedly.

I have said before on this blog that this man is a miscogynist...just look at his body language when he is with his wife...you can just tell by the way he "introduces" her to others...dismissive I believe would be the word to describe his attitude...of course, another hint would be the fact that he left his first wife ( the one he cheated on repeatedly after returning from Vietnam, by his own admission) after she was injured in an accident and still recuperating, by having an affair with Cindy...and he baled with the "rich bitch"...years later he referred to her with the "c" word in front of people...I guess that's what happens when what "goes around comes around"...now, she has to chase him around to help him up and down the steps....

The chance of me voting for McCain is slim to none. Having said that, let's get some content that matters, like the fact he keeps confusing Shias and Sunnis. This is a waste of time.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 10:15 PM on 07/16/2008

Many men and women don't believe learning about a candidate's attitudes about women through their words, and yes, jokes, to be content-less or a waste of time. It is news that he mixes up Shias and Sinnis, absolutely. But it is also news that he has a blatant disregard for women and an inability to gage the appropriateness of his statements. That is important knowledge for all voters to have come Nov.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 12:15 PM on 07/16/2008

The idea that Hillary supporters will support McCain is a lie that has been cooked up by the GOP. The GOP does not speak for Democrats, especially not female Democrats. I wouldn't vote for McCain if my life depended on it, despite the fact the Obama supporters (like yourself) continuously disparage Hillary supporters.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 04:01 PM on 07/16/2008

As an Obama supporter I agree with your assessment, most of these hate filled comments from "Hillary" supporters are masked Republicans. However, you have to assume that many of the "Obama" supporters are the same just trying to keep the animosity there.

There's hundreds of people playing this game all over the net right now. Notice every article posted on the net has 5 or 6 comments by republicans (i.e.: campaign workers) and the rest are actual comments.

There's a guy named Ricky floating around the web saying "Don't feed trolls, flush weasels."
I think his point is missed by this post. Hillary supporters do not need their nose rubbed in anything any more (troll feeding) and PUMA people were never for Hillary or Obama or Democrats to begin with. Check PUMA's website. After a month they generated 938 members.

The correct punchline is "How do you think I feel? He doesn't call, he doesn't write..."

Trust McCain to blow it.

Notwithstanding, telling a joke like that in a private among-us-guys setting is a bit sick but not particularly shocking in my opinion. Not for mixed company, though. And in public? That's flat-out crazy. Lousy judgment. Lousy.

JMaster,
What you say about only telling jokes like that in male company sounds like good manners and judgement, but it also still reveals a lot about the mental makeup of the guy who tells it and the guys who are willing to listen to it.

The fact that it was said 20 years ago initially makes me want to blow it off...after all, we've all said dumb things in our past.

However, the fact that he KEEPS DOING IT shows more about his character than any policy decision or political stance he may have. He is a hateful misogynist.

Forget about the faux outrage over the supposed sexism cried during the primaries...this is a man who truly hates women. He is an old-school, "Father-Knows-Best" bigot who wants to keep us barefoot and pregnant, stoned on lithium and bringing his after-work martini to him before receiving our daily beating. No thank you.

Dirty and off-color jokes are just fine. Sexist jokes are not.

I can assure you I know plenty of fine, fine men who don't feel they have to belittle or revile women in order to be funny. I married one.

Clearly this concept is foreign to you because...? You lack the ability to discern between what's funny and what's offensive perhaps?

First of all I think this whole thing is dumb. Its one more media distraction along with fist bumps, photos with turbins, New Yorker cartoons,... Its just crap because the MSM for reasons too complicated to get into in the number of characters I have left can't talk about the real issues (read Normon Solomon and Noam Chomsky). There are so many really good reasons to not vote for and in fact to hate John McCain that the jokes he makes or his calling his sugar mama wife a C word pale to insignificance. However as long as we are on the topic, you are wrong that all men with an active libido are like this. There is a big difference between telling an off color joke and telling a joke that implies sexual assault is fun for women. I'm no priest or eagle scout but I've never laughed at much less told such a joke and none of the men that I consider true friends would either.

I have noticed a trend in America since about the late seventies, early eighties where guys have felt free to tell as filthy a joke as they pleased in mixed company, children included. They also wear t-shirts with lewd sayings on them and they exhibit behaviors that were rarely put up with years back. Not to say there weren't a few like that even then. The thing though is that often time when they do these things the women present never really express their distaste, on the contrary they either giggle or smile weakly. I think if women were to stop enabling men by doing this and actually registered some real disgust accompanied by becoming scarce that they might actually let men know that these behaviors were unacceptable. By breeding with idiots you just help to keep their kind on this earth. If you cease breeding with them then they will eventually die out as they should.

I'm Obama all the way, but this story is ridiculous. He told an offensive joke! TWENTY YEARS AGO! Oh my Gosh! He's offended our delicate sensibilities!

I see all these posts saying rape is not funny, and you're right of course. RAPE is not funny. But bad things CAN be presented in a manner which is funny, even really bad things like rape and torture and AIDS and murder and what not. Watch ANY HBO comedy special. Or five minutes of George Carlin. Or any episode of South Park. Or the SImpsons. Or Family Guy. Or Always Sunny in Philadelphia. Or the Daily Show. Or Saturday Night Live. Or 30 Rock. American comedy is FILLED with jokes about cancer, rape, kidnapping, pedophilia, infanticide, patricide, spousal abuse, child abuse, racism, killing endangered species...all sorts of things that aren't funny IN REAL LIFE. Making a joke about rape does not mean that you think an ACTUAL rape is funny.

Obviously he's a politician, not a tv writer, and should be more careful. But it is ABSURD that so many of you think that if you make a joke about rape, you MUST hate women.

If you are really as offended as you all are claiming, then I certainly hope you are OUTRAGED at the Simpsons. McCain made ONE joke twenty years ago. Homer Simpson strangles Bart in every other episode. Child abuse is certainly not funny in real life!

Oh, no doubt there ARE plenty of things that make me not like McCain's attitude towards women, specifically the fact that he is against birth control and sex education.

I'm just specifically responding to the posters who are appalled that someone would make a joke about something serious like rape.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 10:26 AM on 07/16/2008

You can't decide how other people should feel. Everyone owns their own feelings.

I feel the joke reveals something about his character. It does tell us how he thinks about women.

And Homer in the Simpsons was not mocking REAL child abuse when he strangled Bart. If there had ever been a moment between Homer and Bart when the show was mocking real child abuse and implying that Bart enjoyed it, it would have spoiled the show and you would be hearing child abuse survivors complain like crazy.
