The Gavel:

The New York Times reports that the Bush Administration's Department of Health and Human Services is drafting a rule that would place new restrictions on domestic family planning programs. While current law allows health care providers and professionals to refuse to provide abortions based on their religious beliefs, this provision would threaten the funding of organizations and health facilities if they do not hire people who would refuse to provide birth control and defines abortion so broadly that it would include many types of birth control, including oral contraception.

"Just pull out, that way everbody's happy."

George Carlin...

You see the really hardcore people will tell you that life begins at fertilization. Fertilization when the sperm fertilizes the egg. Which is usually a few moments after the man says "gee, honey. I was gonna pull out, but the phone rang, and it startled me."

Conservatives have ALWAYS seen contraception as abortion. They have kept this quiet because they don't want to be laughed out of office but they would LOVE to get back to the bad old days when the church set the country's birth control policy.

This is a point that needs to be hammered home about John McSame - he is all for this.

Reporters need to ask Senator McCain specifically about this - does he support restrictions on the availability and insurance coverage for contraceptives? Is he in favor of allowing pharmacist to refuse to dispense prescribed and over the counter contraceptives? His answers will wake up a lot of Americans!

Oh, and the "rhythm method" doesn't count!

The rhythm method. I could never understand where you are going to get a band at two o'clock in the morning.

This is toooo funny!

They support men getting insurance paid Viagra......then.......hahahahahahaha!! These hard men that are not too good to find will not find any woman without her knees duck taped together. Or is that an abortion too.

Will women be allowed to have their normal menstrual cycles or are they aborting?? Now is a good time to cut welfare for single mothers............

Am I living in a science fiction B movie??? Hello.....is anyone out there??

This is scandalous. Where is the outrage???

We're discussing prejudices and discrimination concerning race and religion, page up and page down, and we should. Bringing prejudices to light is the most efficient way to kill them. But Bush now shows misogyny is still alive and well, that is, it's alive and bad, in the current administration. We appearantly can't stop discussing discrimination against women either.

We don't want a society in which the only career possible for a woman is the one of the mother.
We don't want to be kept barefoot, pregnant and cookie-baking in our kitchens on one income pr. family, provided by a man working himself to death to support his growing amont of kids. We want equal rights for men and women, both inside and outside our homes.
We don't want our healths endangered by patronizing.
We don't want to be looked upon as second-class citizens, and we will not be assigned to BEING second-class citizens, locked up in homelife only.

A woman is way more than just a womb. We should not be considered just wombs.

Par for the course from the criminal GWB administration. And however much I doubt this would pass muster with the Supreme Court, with woman-haters Alito and Roberts on the bench, anything is possible.

Any woman who cares about her own reproductive freedom would do well to vote Dem this time, or else your days of controlling your own uterus are numbered.

Carlin said it best (as usual): "They're not Pro-Life; they're Anti-Woman; they hate women."

Drowning prisoners and holding them for years without charges isn't torture
But preventing pregnancy is now abortion?

Only in that upside down world inside GW's skull.

They would redefine being a registered Democrat as Abortion and then legislate against, it if they could.

President Bush's intention to assist stealth organizations in subjecting unsuspecting women to strangers designs is abominable. His proposal to do so by financially assisting groups that deliberately deceive, as well as emotionally and mentally abuse women regarding this completely private matter is despicable. This painful decision belongs solely to the woman involved. That woman is entitled, if she so chooses, to the counsel of her family, friends, personal physician and her own private faith and philosophical tenets. Neither the federal government, church, state, priest nor politician, has any place dictating policy regarding a woman's reproductive choice. What baffles me is why, since he has done and continues to do his level best to make the future beyond grim, socially, economically, environmentally, and culturally, Mr. Bush insists, without any knowledge of the individual' s circumstance or health, that an unintended pregnancy be brought to term no matter what.

The 25 women supporters of HRC who met with Fiorina won't be worried by this. They have the money to side step these "trifling" problems.

As an Obama supporter I've met many regular women who were HRC suppporters but are now fully behind Obama because they are true Democrats and believe in womens rights.

One thing that would help this kind of abomination (two can play that game) is repealing tax breaks for everything religious. If we did, we'd reduce their lobbying and influence (they'd need to work a little harder on the "faith" part of religion, instead of the "owning and controlling politicians" part), the government might spend a bit more time on actual problems we face (I'm an optimist), and we'd get fewer pandering wingnuts like Bush in office. Of course, we'd get other kinds, but still.

"One thing that would help this kind of abomination (two can play that game) is repealing tax breaks for everything religious."

Wealth WRESTLED from religious organizations could generate enough additional tax revenue to fund Universal Health Care, for starters ... thus FORCING these "right-to-life" organizations to INDIRECTLY & UNINTENTIONALLY help those less fortunate among us.

Tax payments ... and reparations to child rape victims ... should monetarily minimize their anti-gay and anti-women agendas?!

According to Bush masturbation could be considered birth control. I hope Hillary supporters for McCain are taking note.

And it's not just W. The political ideology behind this abhorrent stance is the reason McCain stammered around last week when asked about insurance policies paying for erectile dysfunction meds but not for women's birthcontrol. W is only part of the movement to roll back women's reproductive rights.

A woman's ability to prevent pregnancy, starting on a large scale with the approval of birth control pills in the 60s, empowered women to put off marriage and start careers, leave abusive and dangerous relationships, control the number and timing of offspring they had. It changed the woman's role in history forever and was instrumental in positioning women as a group to truly, finally become equal with men.

To take away or inhibit this right, especially among the poorest women--those who would be acccessing federally funded health care, is to roll wowmen's rights back half a century.

It isn't just W. It isn't just McCain. There is a quiet movement behind these rules and changes. We must stop them because this mentality will hurt all of us, not just women.
