The Gavel:

The New York Times reports that the Bush Administration's Department of Health and Human Services is drafting a rule that would place new restrictions on domestic family planning programs. While current law allows health care providers and professionals to refuse to provide abortions based on their religious beliefs, this provision would threaten the funding of organizations and health facilities if they do not hire people who would refuse to provide birth control and defines abortion so broadly that it would include many types of birth control, including oral contraception.

So?

Put some eggs aside, finance it by donating some to a childless couple, and then have your tubes tied. Take TOTAL control over your fertility.

NOT YOURS, George.

Due to my (soon to be illegal?) tubal ligation 25 years ago, my husband's sperm have been going down the tubes (and falling into the abyss)...

This is so horrible. Stop him. You can go to Planned Parenthood's website and write an email or make a donation.

Well, at least we know now why McCain had a problem with the Viagra-Birth Control question. Though I think most American's think that birth control should be covered when viagra is it seems the republicans have lost any sense of equality. Maybe we should ask Jenna how she feels on this topic or Laura? How many republican women would support paying for Viagra but not Birth Control?

...until John McCain takes office.

It's at least as likely as Obama, especially with many of Hillary's disaffected working in his favor.

The main thing is getting rid of Bush. Everything else is secondary.

Contrception is a way to avoid abortion. I'm against abortion, I think it is a massive stain on our nation that we would terminate the life of unborn children, but to say contraception is abortion is just way out there.

I understand completely why Bush would take this stand. It's obvious that he and Laura have had sex only once resulting in twins - right? :)

This country is so mired in the belief that one should be ashamed of his/her own body that government policy is predicated on it. Until as a nation we get over this we will not move forward.

Why does he still try to make policy. He should just find a nice, quiet, little corner somewhere in the White House and doodle until January.

Every Sperm and Egg is sacred but after birth, poor health care, bad schools, crappy jobs and endless wars in which to find a career and then get disposed of. These people are the champion hypocrites of all time.

I wonder if the 25 disaffected Clinton supporters in Westchester are taking this into consideration or are they too emotional from their loss to be bothered?

i'd say that, although i strongly disagree with bush on this and...well, about a zillion other things, it DOES have a certain twisted 'logic' to it...after all, the Left has been defining abortion as contraception for decades

Again to all -- including the sisterhood, Taylor Marsh and everyone else in Hillary world ... It's not about "Roe." It never has been. The villian is "Griswold v. Connecticut." In world Republican, even male masturbation is unlawful, never mind IUD's. As a male, I'm sure I'll be able to find a secret hiding place to pleasure myself without the Faith Patrol finding me. However, you girls out they're are going to have a tougher time if you want to engage in intercourse with a male partner. No Rubbers, no Foam, No IUD's, No Pills ( not even to control menstrual cramps - it's the duty of a women to suffer ). Again, the white, Christian male, just like the lord Jesus himself ( who I understand spoke not unlike GWB) must, and will, continue to dominate the earth. Now will one of you broads get me a beer and cook me up some dinner?

And farther down the slippery slope is the right to procreate at all. Lost in all the controversy of terminating a pregnancy is the issue of starting one. Most of the wingnuts probably would not be shocked to learn that there is a fundamental right to procreate. However, they will be shocked to learn that it took the Supreme Court to make this the law of the land. They will probably be even more shocked, if the very fact that it took a court to establish the right to procreate does not reduce them to a catatonic state, to learn that this did not happen in the halcyon days of the "liberal, activist courts" in the 1960s and 1970s but in 1942.

You know, it is an age old tune. If women are constantly pregnant and pre-occupied with bookoos of kids, they don't have much time to think, do they? The pill liberated women by allowing them the freedom to choose their own destinies, get higher education and make their mark in the world. This administration has done everything they could to beat us down, and we are on the verge of being a third world nation. Our national debt is owned by a communist country (China), with whom we also have a huge trade defecit, we are in 2 protracted wars, our infrastucture is falling apart, we are facing wheat shortages, are in a mortgage and financial meltdown, groceries are sky high, and freight and air travel are periously close to shutting down. And what concerns this administration??? The pill??? I've said it before and I really mean it. If Obama doesn't win the election, we are seriously doomed, because McCain will only lead us down this present path of destruction. I hope Canada is prepared for the massive influx of Americans. Hell, let's just let Mexico take it all if they want it. I have always considered being born an American a gift from God. In seven and 1/2 short years, I have witnessed the greatest country on earth virtually smudged out by the arrogance of the Bush administration. And they are worried about the pill???
