The Gavel:

The New York Times reports that the Bush Administration's Department of Health and Human Services is drafting a rule that would place new restrictions on domestic family planning programs. While current law allows health care providers and professionals to refuse to provide abortions based on their religious beliefs, this provision would threaten the funding of organizations and health facilities if they do not hire people who would refuse to provide birth control and defines abortion so broadly that it would include many types of birth control, including oral contraception.

What are they trying to do? Think about it.

Outlaw contraception, but continue to have insurance-funded Viagra. People won't stop having sex, we'll just produce a lot more babies.

A country of serfs to cater to the needs of the ultra-rich. God forbid they should have to wipe their own a$$e$.

I'm sure his plan will certainly cover Viagra though. Yeah, insurance will pay for the men to have their jollies, but won't pay for women to have birth control. It's the same with with post-cancer reconstruction. Women get hardly any benefits for reconstruction (or have to fight with the insurance companies to get coverage,) but men get nearly 100% coverage with no issue.

Please, someone convince congress to impeach this guy & take Cheney with him.

Viagra is not a problem at all in their mindset. The Good Book says "to be fruitful and multiply," and it seems to matter very little to these people that an 80+ year old man "plants his seed" with very little chance of being able to effectively raise the ensuing "child, not a choice."

But then we should remember that "responsible parenting" is the message they seem to reserve exclusively for poor and working class minorities.

Just Bushie's way of sticking it to the country (in this case women) before he leaves office. Add it to the list.

I guess his fawning over the Pope brought about another religious conversion for Bush and the need to outlaw birth control came directly from God. The lunatics are running the asylum and calling it a government.

Well, that's why they've insisted that A HUMAN LIFE begins **at the moment of conception**, and defined THAT as the fertilized egg starting to divide. They know the Pill doesn't prevent that, it prevents attachment to the uterine wall. Therefore they can claim that it's A HUMAN BEING GETTING KILLED by not attaching to its source of nourishment. So shouldn't they also have some of their symbolic funerals for all the fertilized eggs that naturally don't attach, and demand that medical science find a way to make sure they all do? All human lives are sacred to these guys, until they're born. Then they're just whiners.

"They know the Pill doesn't prevent that, it prevents attachment to the uterine wall. Therefore they can claim that it's A HUMAN BEING GETTING KILLED by not attaching to its source of nourishment."

In Biblical times, girls would be married at the beginning of puberty and would remain almost continually nursing and/or with child until menopause, and therefore would seldom, if ever, experience the Curse.

In today's world, however, the Monthly Visit is all too common, and the resulting waste of innocent life is heartbreaking. President Bush's Prayer Squad holds solemn memorial services each morning for every last discarded tampon and maxi-pad, and prays fervently for an end to the unholy slaughter.

George's mother Barbara should have used contraception, we would have a better world had she done so.

THIS IS A RED HERRING.

The administration is setting up a straw-man position at the extreme right to make McCain look comparatively moderate when he comes out "fighting" for women's reproductive rights --- albeit on a ridiculously limited basis.

I can't wait for a reporter to ask Mccain if he agrees with this? That's the best part of the president still running around being the decider. We sort of get explanations by proxy through McCain....or incoherent rambling verbiage, which is sometimes more fun than any actual answer.

Now we know what the Pope and Bush talked about during their last visit. The Catholic Church has recently published articles in their right leaning publicans claiming that the lack of priests is due to contraception.
