Surreal

The conventional wisdom is that any day spent discussing national security is a good day for the McCain campaign. But Barack Obama's team appears to believe Afghanistan is a winning issue for them.

Building on Tuesday's news cycle, when the campaigns' respective speeches on Afghanistan dominated headlines, the Obama camp organized an early morning conference call on Wednesday. Senior foreign policy adviser Dr. Susan Rice and communications strategist Robert Gibbs were offered up to reporters. Dr. Rice opened the proceedings by calling McCain's Tuesday speech "surreal" because of the candidate's newfound emphasis on the need for more U.S. troops in Afghanistan. (Later in the afternoon on Tuesday, after his speech, McCain appeared to be trying to take some of that back, when he noted that an increased troop level could potentially be achieved by using NATO forces.)

"Up until a few days ago, his view was that we hadn't diverted any effort and attention from Afghanistan to deal with Iraq. That there was no need for additional American forces in Afghanistan. That all, in effect, was going well," Dr. Rice said Wednesday, adding: "Yesterday, he woke up and came to the sudden conclusion that indeed Afghanistan merited more strategic focus -- something the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff has been saying for months -- and that we would therefore be willing to put in additional combat brigades. But then he got confused again, as to whether those needed to be American or NATO [troops] or some combination thereof."

Gibbs also had some fun with the McCain campaign's theme of consulting with commanders on the ground before forming strategy.

"Those reporters who were traveling with Senator McCain yesterday can verify whether he was consulting with the commanders on the ground in Afghanistan multiple times yesterday that would coincide with the multiple positions he seemed to take," Gibbs said.

Before the conference call began, the McCain camp sent out a blast email to reporters repeating its criticism of Obama for not holding any hearings on Afghanistan since taking over a Senate Foreign Relations subcommittee last year. Rice, in turn, attempted to explain away that political barb -- also used by Sen. Hillary Clinton during the primaries -- by saying that the subcommittee would be the wrong venue for hearings on Afghanistan.

"Joe Biden has said that as chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, he insisted and continues to insist that hearings on Afghanistan -- such a critical issue -- be held at the full committee level, and not at the subcommittee level," Rice said. "Perhaps the McCain people will understand that and cease their senseless attack on this point." She didn't sound very optimistic.

The fact that McCain frequently gets confused on foreign affairs and domestic policy issues is disconcerting.

Yesterday McCain after taking several stands on Afghanistan finally settled on Obama's during one speech.

Over the past few days he's mentioned "Czechoslovakia" several times in the context as if it still exists. Fifteen years ago Czechoslovakia split into what are now known as the Czech Republic and Slovakia. He should know that.

McCain's idea of "victory" in Iraq is inaccurate and worse insensitive. Even General Petraeus does not use words like "victory". Victory is declared between militaries not against a population.

McCain falsely equates Obama's promise to bring the troops home from Iraq [within 16 months] with "surrender". But who are we surrendering to? The Iraqi government and the Iraqi people? They asked us to leave. Iraq is a sovereign country. Yet repeatedly McCain drives that charge against Obama. It doesn't make sense.

There can be no victory but leaving Iraq to a government that is taking responsibility for its own future is success. Success is achievable whereas victory is not.

Furthermore McCain states he knows how to win wars. What war did he win? He was a POW in Viet Nam. He has never led nor has he been in charge of making crucial military decisions.

Some will argue Obama hasn't either, but McCain is running on his [dubious] national security "credentials," Obama isn't.

McCain's moments of confusion, judgment and other considerations raise questions begging to be asked and answered.

Don't you think it is a bit ironic that McCain keeps harping on Obama's lack of experience, but Obama kicks his ass when it comes to 21st century technology? He is up to date, lucid, and with it. I totally respect my elders; however I would argue that having a contemporary leader is absolutely necessary in this era of merging technologies.

Obama is the man of experience in this scenario.

I'm not sure what his problem is - confusion - senior moments - the beginning of dementia - just know he seems to get his facts wrong way too often. What also scares me is the fact that he doesn't know how to use a computer.

"I don't know how to go online yet, but I hope to get that down soon."

His staff have been trying to teach him computer skills for months.

He's been a U.S. Senator (the government is networked with computers) for over a quarter of a century.

Scar-y!

It strikes me as odd that the so-called ‘rookie’ keeps nailin’ the economy, military and foreign policy points while the incumbents with their homeboy advantage appear three if not ten steps behind.

I was saying the same thing yesterday. If he'd screwed up on his Afghanistan position, they(MSM) would've torn Obama a new as*hole. I mean not 2 hrs after Obama's speech, McCain came on and practically mirrored Obama's comments. That was pretty sad.

Yeah.

And did you notice how everyday Bush is moving closer to Obama? AFTER 7 years to figure it out.

Is this a Fox/AP reporter? It cracks me up how they spin things....
Instead of saying that
"Rice SAID the subcommittee..... etc"

They have to throw in.. ."attempted"
Look, Obama was Chair of European affairs..... Iraq? Afghanistan?? Not in Europe the last time I checked... so get over it!

The mainstream polls are to keep Democratic candidates or anyone of any other non-conservative party firmly to the center. They do this every four years, lest candidates get radical ideas from the masses such as National Healthcare (single-payer system).

Corporate media = Corporate interests.

To paraphrase a Hemingway title: McCain is "The Old Man and the Internet". He can't log on without his wife's assistance. And we think he is capable of leading our country as we fall behind China and India in creating an educated workforce that can compete in this century?

BUT he is finally learning to 'get on', as they say. He should have it down shortly. I don't know if it's his password or his name that he's having trouble with.

Good....this needs to highlighted. It needs to be floated to the top...it needs to be picked up by the media. Every little flub and misstep.
This guy gives me the creeps anymore. He finished the academy at the bottom of his class....he spent more then 5 years being tortured (bowing head) ..............his age is an issue.....his wife seems to be holding him up going down steps and such...and he has these memory lapses...not to mention..again...the man isn't the brightest bulb to begin with.....like...here we go again....SIGH.
Then...he's stubborn...which to me means he wouldn't readily listen to advisers....and...he has that famous out of control temper.
I was watching NBC back in 2000 when Maria Shriver got in his way...nuff said.
I just don't understand why everyone worships this guy...as a hero...well, isn't that special?!
Can he be a leader ?...can he withstand and function a POTUS ?
Please....media.....heed......lol......discuss these matters, write about these issues.....this is not a popularity contest her....too much is at stake here.

There's been a lot of static of late about why the Obama campaign hasn't been MORE aggressive in attacking McCain on his obvious confusion on so many issues. I think they will start to do more if the MSM continues to give Mac a free pass.

Geez, the pundits don't even have to comment... if the MSM would just run video of McCain speaking, the guy will bury himself. The Obama campaign will be able to sit back and watch McCain destroy himself with his own inability to say the same thing twice.

But seriously, put on one of the major networks tonight and watch the evening news. What you'll get is soundless video of McCain (he's got a microphone in hand, and he's talking, but you can't hear him), with a news anchor voice over saying stuff like, "That iconoclastic maverick Senator John McCain was out on the campaign trail again today, kicking up his maverick heels and raising some VERY SERIOUS QUESTIONS about Senator Obama's credibility on major issues...."

Seriously, check it out, see if I'm not right.

You're absolutely right.

The MSM is covering for him--ignoring gaffe after gaffe that they'd be playing up 24/7 if anyone of them were said by Obama.

Obama, the candidate of change, can't get online by himsel?

Obama, the freshman senator, still thinks Czechoslovakia is a country?

Obama, the rookie, has a looonng deer-in-the-headlights moment when asked his position on health insurers covering birth control--and then (1) forgets his vote and (2) obviously and badly stonewalls the question?

The media would be like a pack of greyhounds ripping into a rabbit saying how unqualified he was.

But, instead, the flubs are McCain's--so the media ignores it all.

Clark? Biden? Can't the (few) Democrats with some teeth get together and TAKE THIS UNSUITABLE OLD GUY ON????

To be fair Dan Abrams has started to devote a lot of time to this recently, I just hope other news outlets follow suit.

Look at his eyes. He has geriatric symptons that you see in residents in assisted living and nursing home environments. It is not a critism, it is just a fact of aging. I have seen these eyes in the elderly over and over again. Ask any Internal Medicine Doctor if they look at the eyes of the elderly for these symptoms and they will say they do. His forgetfulness and confusion do not lie and are further proof that he is not up to the job.
