(AP Photo)

KABUL, Afghanistan — U.S. troops abandoned a remote outpost in eastern Afghanistan where militants killed nine of their comrades this week, officials said Wednesday, in another sign of the struggle facing foreign and Afghan security forces strung out along the mountainous border.

Elsewhere in the frontier region, NATO launched artillery and helicopter strikes in Pakistan after coming under insurgent rocket fire, officials said.

The violence is another indication of the growing strength of the Taliban-led insurgency, especially in Afghanistan's east, where the outpost near the village of Wanat was breached by militants on Sunday. Nine Americans were killed in the deadliest incident for U.S. forces in three years.

On Tuesday, the insurgents drove out the handful of police left behind to defend government offices in the village, but 50 more officers were deployed Wednesday and soon regained control, senior provincial police official Ghoolam Farouq said.

The militants retreated into the mountains, and village elders negotiated a truce between the two sides, Farouq said.

Omar Sami, spokesman for the Nuristan provincial governor, said American and Afghan soldiers left the base Tuesday.

NATO confirmed that the post, which lies amid precipitous mountains close to the Pakistan border, had been vacated while insisting that international and Afghan troops will "retain a strong presence in that area with patrolling and other means."

In Washington, Pentagon leaders said Wednesday they are looking for ways to send additional troops to Afghanistan this year, signaling an acceleration in what had been plans to shift forces there no earlier than next year.

Story continues below

"I think that we are clearly working very hard to see if there are opportunities to send additional forces sooner rather than later," Defense Secretary Robert Gates told Pentagon reporters. But, he added that no final decisions or recommendations have been made.

Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, who recently returned from meetings with commanders in Afghanistan, said they clearly want more troops.

"It's a tougher fight, it's a more complex fight, and they need more troops to have the long-term impact that we all want to have there," said Mullen, who also met last week with Pakistani leaders.

The Pentagon has been wrestling with how to provide what they say is a much needed military buildup in Afghanistan, while they still have 150,000 troops in Iraq.

The retreat from the eastern outpost will be considered a victory by the insurgents, and comes after a spate of security setbacks for President Hamid Karzai's government, including a spectacular Taliban jail break in the southern Kandahar province in June that freed about 900 inmates, and a spike in attacks alongside the border with Pakistan.

In response, Karzai has stepped up his rhetoric against neighboring Pakistan, whose lawless tribal areas adjacent to Afghanistan serve as sanctuaries for al-Qaida and other militants.

Karzai blames the attacks _ including suicide bombings and cross-border raids _ on Pakistan's intelligence service, alleging they are behind the insurgency in Afghanistan. Pakistan denies the charge saying Karzai is trying to create "an artificial crisis" to deflect attention from his own failings.

The accusations have pitched relations between these key U.S. allies to their lowest point since U.S. invasion of Afghanistan in 2001.

In other violence reported Wednesday, the U.S.-led coalition said eight civilians were killed when it called in airstrikes after one of its patrols came under attack in the country's west. The issue of civilian casualties has caused friction between the Afghan government and U.S. and NATO troops, and has weakened the popularity of the Western-backed Karzai.

In a separate statement, the coalition said another airstrike killed several militants after they attacked a joint U.S. and Afghan patrol in Kandahar province's Shah Wali district on Tuesday.

The governor of Kandahar said eight militants were killed during an operation in the southern province's Khakrez district in the past two days. A regional Taliban commander, Mullah Mahmoud, who controlled about 250 fighters, was among those killed, a NATO statement said.

What is O's objective in Afghanistan? Does he think we'll eliminate radical I-slamists in country forever? Will OBL's capture end the threat?

We've already crippled Al Qaeda's ability to execute outside of their pockets of strength.

Our mission in Afghanistan is almost complete. Iraq is not far behind.

Next up, Iran.

In Pretend Land having al Qaeda rebuild to pre-9/11 status in a safe haven, protected by a country harboring them is known as crippling their ability to execute outside of their pockets of strength.

Any PDB's indicating an immnent attack should be ignored. Again.

McCain wants to stay in Iraq because he says Bin Laden told him that Iraq was the focus of the war on terror. Do you think, maybe, that Bin laden was fooling ol' John? I think Bin Laden said that to keep the U.S. out of Afganistan. Looks like that ol' Bin Laden fooled us again.

Now both Bush and Macinbush are calling for versions of what Obama has called for in afghanistan to send troops from Iraq into the country. Only Barack wants the troos to come home first and rest before going back as the long term deployments are killing the troops in Iraq and they need to have time off to recharge. None of us would want to be on duty in a war zone for months without relief. There isn't enough troops to do all the work needed in the middle east and since bush and Macinbush claim the surge was a vistory then get the troops the hell out of Iraq! It is funny almost that while calling Obama naive these GOP specials think more like him on the afghanistan war every day. I cannot fathom why to this very day I still see vehicles on the road with W stickers on them like they are still proud of their support and the man after all these years.

I bet the Russians are laughing their a_s off at us. How will we get Iraqs oil to the coast? I guess we will have to go thru Turkey.

February 5, 1989
The last Soviet troops leave Kabul
In an important move signaling the close of the nearly decade-long Soviet military intervention in Afghanistan, the last Russian troops withdraw from the capital city of Kabul. Less than two weeks later, all Soviet troops departed Afghanistan entirely, ending what many observers referred to as Russia's "Vietnam."
Soviet armed forces entered Afghanistan in December 1979 to support that nation's pro-Soviet communist government in its battles with Muslim rebels. Almost immediately, the Soviet Union found itself mired in a rapidly escalating conflict. Afghan rebels put up unexpectedly stiff resistance to the Russian intervention. Soon, thousands of Soviet troops were fighting a bloody, costly, and ultimately frustrating battle to end the Afghan resistance. By the time the Soviets started to withdraw in early 1989, over 13,000 Russian soldiers were dead and over 22,000 had been wounded. The Soviet Union also suffered from a very negative diplomatic response from the United States--President Jimmy Carter put a hold on arms negotiations, asked for economic sanctions, and pressed for an American boycott of the 1980 Olympics in Moscow.

While you get tired of the same spewing points as you call them, remember this++++++++ Over 3,000 americans are dead in Iraq++++++++++++++ And over 3,000 died in the twin towers of New York. Those weren't only American, and not only Americans are dieing in that useless war in Iraq either! I enemies were never in Iraq! They were in the Hills of Pakistan and afganastan. Ok so were in iraq now! We've done our jobs, and it's time the Iraqi's took over and take care of themselfs! If they committ war toward one another, that is their bussiness! if they let Iran take them over, that is their bussiness! We gave them the freedom to choose, and how they choose to live is up to them, not us! Remember this, The President of the United states just used Obama Idea to put down nuclear weapons in Iran! The President has called for talks with Iran! Some thing they called Obama a fool and ignorant for even suggesting! Mccain has claimed this move Obama suggested ignorant of the situation! Yet, here repub's are doing exactly what Obama said needed done! So the man isn't so dumb or ignorant! He's intellilgent, and learned, and educated way beyond Mccain !

how come that when a republican even mentions his or her religion in passing, it's such a big deal and separation of church and state is brought up, but obama keeps talking about HIS religion. He shouldn't use it as a politcal tool, it's so unbecoming and insincere. also, why is he so concerned about being thought of as a muslim? what's the big deal? wasn't his father a muslim? is he not proud of his father's religion? why are there so many flags in the backround when obama speaks? is he overcompensating for something? why can't he just be himself, isn't that good enough. why is this race so darn close in a year where everything is pointing to the demacrats. does everyone here think that it would be such a close race against this mccain character if the demacratic nominee was hiilary, or gore? is it too late to change our nominee at this point?

HOME GROWN OIL
Several years ago some one discovered that the oil from the jojoba bean is an excellent lubricant for most types of machinery . Even crank case oil in your auto . It is so much better than petro oil that instead of changing oil and filter just change the filter and top off the oil . No matter how much smoke and mirrors are dangled in our faces the occupation of Iraq and Afganistan is because of OIL . In one place it is to take it and other place it is for an oil pipe line . Many people have died and lots more are going to die so the big corps can sell and monopolize the oil market and make lots of cash for their friends . They blame it on the auto drivers (smoke and mirror) while they collect the cash . How many of our LIVES will be saved using home grown oil as a lubricant ? Our law makers and Detroit have designed the auto so that it is difficult to use any fuel but petroleum products but how much money is spent changing petro oil and dumping it or reprocessing it ? This could be a new industry right in AMERICA . I just hope it wouldn't give some army ideas about invading and occupying our county .

Did we call in the gunships after the THUGS re-acquired the real estate?

I see another 'double-down' strategy change for Afghanistan now that it's worked handsomely in Iraq. McBush is already calling for it. And the Messiah has previously okayed the escalation of Afghanistan operations to include a Pakastani invasion. Will we widen the war OVERTLY into the trible areas of Pakistan? Or will we continue the JF Kerry -style forays into forbidden territory and a Nixonian denial of said operations?

Has anyone alerted McCane that he hasn’t won a war? Sitting in Congress for 26 years and cheerleading Boosh’s failed Iraq policy doesn’t translate to winning a war.

McCain also said he knows how to win a war. How does he know? What is he basing this knowledge on? He gets well-deserved kudos for surviving being a prisoner of war, but that experience does not equate into strategic wisdom in winning wars. Someone on MSNBC's blog wrote "McCain getting shot down only proves that he was a bad pilot." He's also suspiciously sensitive about his war record, which tells me that his ordeal as a prisoner is all that's there.

Buchanan is the one in that last bastion of bigotry & racism! He has completely reversed his right-winged conservative blab of anti-war, small government to support Mc in this war madness & spending outrage! I think all of his friends are deceased!!
