Just after taking the stage at Daughters of the American Revolution Hall in Washington, D.C. Thursday, former Vice President Al Gore thanked a packed house for attending his speech on how to combat climate change. And then he pointed to a couple of special guests: Libertarian Presidential Candidate Bob Barr and Black Eyed Peas rapper will.i.am (he of the now-famous "Yes We Can" YouTube video in support of Barack Obama).

Gore thanked will.i.am for making the trip from California, and praised Barr for his serious attention to the issue of global climate change.

After the crowd settled down, it wasn't long before Gore brought them to rapturous applause when he said, "We're borrowing money from China to buy oil from the Persian Gulf to burn it in ways that destroy the planet. Every bit of that's got to change."

Then Gore threw down his gauntlet: "Today I challenge our nation to commit to producing 100 percent of our electricity from renewable energy and truly clean carbon-free sources within 10 years."

The former vice president said his challenge is achievable and affordable now in a way it wasn't mere years ago, given the rising cost of oil and the impact of increased investment in new technologies. Specifically, Gore cited the fact that silicon needed for solar panels once fetched $300 per kilogram, but now only costs $50.

Perhaps acknowledging rumblings from Democrats who were reportedly worried that the speech comes at a time when Americans are more interested in lower gas prices than environmental lectures, Gore described his challenge as a necessary part of efforts to foster economic development and improve national security.

"Our dangerous over-reliance on carbon-based fuels is at the core of all three of [our] challenges -- the economic, environmental and national security crises."

Later, Gore claimed that exploding demand for oil in China would keep driving up the global price of the commodity, no matter how much new drilling or exploration is undertaken by the United States. "And politicians cannot bring gasoline prices down in the short term," he said.

Gore admitted that major obstacles stand in the way of his challenge. He noted that the nation's power grid is not sufficiently strong to deliver renewable energy to all parts of the country, but he said "it has to be upgraded anyway." Much more threatening to his proposal, Gore said, was our "sclerotic" politics that only takes "baby steps" instead of decisive action.

"But I've begun to hear different voices in this country from people who ... are hungry for a new, different, and bold approach," Gore said.

Outside the forum, a cavalcade of anti-Gore protest organizations lined the streets, trying to make their counter-arguments. Lyndon LaRouche's partisans handed out a glossy flier entitled "The Implications of the Gore Hoax for International Policy." Other wags took up mock-collection plates to pay for Gore's own carbon footprint. But inside the hall, Gore's references to such past government efforts as the Marshall Plan and President Kennedy's call to reach the moon tapped a vein of enthusiasm in the crowd that resulted in a standing ovation as he left the stage.

UPDATE: In a statement released after Gore's speech, Barack Obama chimed in:

"For decades, Al Gore has challenged the skeptics in Washington on climate change and awakened the conscience of a nation to the urgency of this threat. I strongly agree with Vice President Gore that we cannot drill our way to energy independence, but must fast-track investments in renewable sources of energy like solar power, wind power and advanced biofuels, and those are the investments I will make as President. It's a strategy that will create millions of new jobs that pay well and cannot be outsourced, and one that will leave our children a world that is cleaner and safer."

Al Gore is not the solution. I believe we learned that 8 years ago. Why oh why, can't the Obama camp ever say "No Comment?" This is just another disaster waiting to happen. I've read posters on this and other threads that this election is going to be a landslide for Obama? Maybe they were joking? It's not going to be a cake walk, and it should BE! But here we are again.................

There is absolutely NO proof of Mr. Gore's global warming theory but even if there were, what are you going to do for us in the next six months? And, on top of that, Al's a loser; politically speaking of course.

Al has no windmills nor solar panels on his house. How many people reading this have their air-conditioners on?

It's so darn frustrating -- I'm telling ya'll, I have a bad feeling about November. Somebody in the Obama camp, please wake up!

Lots of flaws, lots of mistakes, even hypocrisy in alot of these new ideas for energy. There is just so many tweaks yet....SO WHAT"S THE POINT? Look at all the flaws and imperfections we have with standard cars, you'd think after all this time...Look at all the money and hassle just to "maintain", and the "recalls" because the industry is still "tweaking" ideas etc. etc etc. We cannot just jump into the "ideal" perfect alternative, we're gonna have to do it the hard way folks, just like with EVERYTHING else on this earth-through trial and error! Look, as time goes by, new and better "leading voices" will slowly emerge to reflect our higher standards in "greener" issues. Right now though, this is where we are... somewhere all flawed and risky...and that's okay because NOTHING can CHANGE if we don't accept some pain to reach the payoff.

By pain, do you mean the millions of families throughout the northern parts of this country, earning under twenty or twenty five thousand dollars a year that will be paying in the neighborhood of $1200 a month for home heating oil? Or the poor and fixed income elderly , some of whom will freeze to death this winter?

Based on your comment, Jessegirl is on your side . . . I know the 80's created a lot of terrible things, but if you don't like the song complain to your radio station, don't bash the comments

Nonsense!

Wind Solar and plug in hybrids can solve our energy problems sustainable forever.
Wind is cheaper to install and the fuel is free.

Hopefully rooftop solar will also soon be cheap.

With in improvement in the environment, cheaper and more convenient.
See my profile for details.

It's the Right who believe that NOTHING should be for free, that life is a zero sum game.

Gore is proposing to make energy cost even more when its price is currently skyrocketing and edging the world towards a global recession.

The differences between McCain and Obama are minimal, when you consider that both believe big government can save you from yourself, and that we can save other nations from themselves as well. I will not play along with the game of lesser of two evils, as I believe that is part of what has plunged this nation into the mess we find ourselves today.

Has anyone seen the national T.V. ads by T. Boone Pickens? He funded the Swiftboat Veterans for Truth. He has a plan for energy independence that he will tell us about later. Watch your pocket-books. The man is a thief.
Since Obama supporters jumped on his bandwagon against Hillary Clinton, I was afraid they would fall prey to his current scheme.
The major donors (62%) to this PAC are energy trader T. Boone Pickens, who funded the Swift Boat campaign in 2004 against John Kerry as well as the Progress for America Voter Fund PAC and the Straight Talk America PAC, with homebuilder Bob Perry, investor Harold Clark Simmons, and Richard Collins, a Dallas County, Texas newspaper publisher; totaling over $10 million. Since 1978, Pickens has funneled over $5.5 Million into various PACs.

Well thanks for announcing that, not that anyone who had any sense couldn't look it up. Did you watch the interview with V. P. Gore on Meet the Press? He was asked about him. Did you hear his answer? Apparently not. Pickens is coming at this financially where V.P. Gore is looking at it as climate change. Actually Pickens in this instance is how you will sell it to Americans, financially. V.P. Gore actually said what he was doing with his wind mill project was good. He didn't like the natural gas for cars too much but said it would still be a step in the right direction over using oil.

I think there's some sort of user error with this sight. I could have sworn someone actually tried to offer up Michelle Malkin as a legitimate counter point.

Most folks on this board would agree that it is Bush's fault that oil prices are so high. But, you've got to take the good with the bad. As a result of high oil prices it is now profitable for companies and individuals to move to other energy platforms.

So, while Gore's going to run around taking credit for the sea change in attitudes towards renwable energy, we'll all know that this claim falls in there with the "I invented the internet" boondogle.

Where's he taking credit? He explicitly said in the speech that it's the high oil prices that's making investment in alternative energy more feasible than ever before. He's urging America to seize this opportunity. And "I invented the internet" is a lie. Do you always pull facts out of your posterior or is this a one-time thing?

Hey Sleeperd where did you disappear? Look what I have for you.
from The American Physical Society:

APS Climate Change Statement
APS Position Remains Unchanged

The American Physical Society reaffirms the following position on climate change, adopted by its governing body, the APS Council, on November 18, 2007:

"Emissions of greenhouse gases from human activities are changing the atmosphere in ways that affect the Earth's climate."

An article at odds with this statement recently appeared in an online newsletter of the APS Forum on Physics and Society, one of 39 units of APS. The header of this newsletter carries the statement that "Opinions expressed are those of the authors alone and do not necessarily reflect the views of the APS or of the Forum." This newsletter is not a journal of the APS and it is not peer reviewed.

Blees you hume for exposing one of these evil agents of disinformation. They dare to post their heresy in the hope that uninformed dullards will fall for it. Expose them all. (I would say burn them at the stake but of course that would create carbon emissions and do further damage to our sacred orb)

I see lots of people still are being guided to think of record gas prices + record profits as a supply/demand issue. A sucker every minute the saying goes.

Did you notice the 4.5% oil price drop a couple of days ago? Demand must have dropped or supply shot up suddenly in a 24 hour period.

There is no way to justify an almost 6 fold price increase since 2002 based on global supply and demand.

Nope. You didn't watch all of it, did you. Gore insisted that those who attended should ride a bike or take public transportation to it.

Around back of the venue was Gore's caravan of Towncars and Chevy Suburbans, which sat idling to make sure the big gas guzzlers were all comfy cool when Gore and Co. got in.

This is good news, in that it will pressure politicians to rise to the occasion.

It's telling that we are seeing Al Gore in a suit & tie, with all those flags behind him again. To me, this says to me that he feels that it's time to become political again, if only to put this issue on the front burner. He has spoken previously as a political outsider, as that best suited his ability to be effective... but now he's upping the ante, and will be speaking to a national audience throughout this campaign, with a level of gravitas that is arguably higher today than that of any former president.

It should be mentioned that Al Gore would be an awesome, unstoppable Vice Presidential candidate... though in some ways, it would be a demotion. If he gets his way on global warming efforts, he will arguably be more influential than whoever else might become Vice President.
