Just after taking the stage at Daughters of the American Revolution Hall in Washington, D.C. Thursday, former Vice President Al Gore thanked a packed house for attending his speech on how to combat climate change. And then he pointed to a couple of special guests: Libertarian Presidential Candidate Bob Barr and Black Eyed Peas rapper will.i.am (he of the now-famous "Yes We Can" YouTube video in support of Barack Obama).

Gore thanked will.i.am for making the trip from California, and praised Barr for his serious attention to the issue of global climate change.

After the crowd settled down, it wasn't long before Gore brought them to rapturous applause when he said, "We're borrowing money from China to buy oil from the Persian Gulf to burn it in ways that destroy the planet. Every bit of that's got to change."

Then Gore threw down his gauntlet: "Today I challenge our nation to commit to producing 100 percent of our electricity from renewable energy and truly clean carbon-free sources within 10 years."

The former vice president said his challenge is achievable and affordable now in a way it wasn't mere years ago, given the rising cost of oil and the impact of increased investment in new technologies. Specifically, Gore cited the fact that silicon needed for solar panels once fetched $300 per kilogram, but now only costs $50.

Perhaps acknowledging rumblings from Democrats who were reportedly worried that the speech comes at a time when Americans are more interested in lower gas prices than environmental lectures, Gore described his challenge as a necessary part of efforts to foster economic development and improve national security.

"Our dangerous over-reliance on carbon-based fuels is at the core of all three of [our] challenges -- the economic, environmental and national security crises."

Story continues below

Later, Gore claimed that exploding demand for oil in China would keep driving up the global price of the commodity, no matter how much new drilling or exploration is undertaken by the United States. "And politicians cannot bring gasoline prices down in the short term," he said.

Gore admitted that major obstacles stand in the way of his challenge. He noted that the nation's power grid is not sufficiently strong to deliver renewable energy to all parts of the country, but he said "it has to be upgraded anyway." Much more threatening to his proposal, Gore said, was our "sclerotic" politics that only takes "baby steps" instead of decisive action.

"But I've begun to hear different voices in this country from people who ... are hungry for a new, different, and bold approach," Gore said.

Outside the forum, a cavalcade of anti-Gore protest organizations lined the streets, trying to make their counter-arguments. Lyndon LaRouche's partisans handed out a glossy flier entitled "The Implications of the Gore Hoax for International Policy." Other wags took up mock-collection plates to pay for Gore's own carbon footprint. But inside the hall, Gore's references to such past government efforts as the Marshall Plan and President Kennedy's call to reach the moon tapped a vein of enthusiasm in the crowd that resulted in a standing ovation as he left the stage.

UPDATE: In a statement released after Gore's speech, Barack Obama chimed in:

"For decades, Al Gore has challenged the skeptics in Washington on climate change and awakened the conscience of a nation to the urgency of this threat. I strongly agree with Vice President Gore that we cannot drill our way to energy independence, but must fast-track investments in renewable sources of energy like solar power, wind power and advanced biofuels, and those are the investments I will make as President. It's a strategy that will create millions of new jobs that pay well and cannot be outsourced, and one that will leave our children a world that is cleaner and safer."

"You dupes are beyond belief."

Actually "dupes," in my book, would classify anyone who would parrot or fall for any of the four (out of four statements) fallacies you just posted.

I'm curious as to how you are made to feel so strongly about something you can't argue for.

The American Physical Society, an organization representing nearly 50,000 physicists, has reversed its stance on climate change and is now proclaiming that many of its members disbelieve in human-induced global warming. The APS is also sponsoring public debate on the validity of global warming science. The leadership of the society had previously called the evidence for global warming "incontrovertible

This was today, you insufferable, pompous twit.

A month ago, there were 31,00 scientists including 9,000 PHd's that rejected this scam.

I repeat - when are you dupes going to wake up?

I like your "flat earth" comparison.
Those who believed the earth was flat believed so religiously. Those who didn't were vilified, ridiculed, lost their jobs and treated like fools, or worse.

Sounds very very similar to what is happening now. Those who question global warming are vilified, ridiculed, lose their jobs and treated like fools, or worse.

On the one hand you have people willing to question current hysteria and firmly held beliefs and then you have folks like you. All someone has to do is come on one of these blogs and state he has doubts about the validity of global warming and you people become unhinged.

You mentioned "irrational fear and name calling", while calling the doubter names. Do you not see the irony and projection in your own remarks?

I could be wrong on this, but I think G_ore just introduced a massive and much needed national initiative that would be followed by an 0bama Administration.

Look for a Global Warming Czar heading up a "Space Race" type program for energy independence and job growth, while dramatically reducing CO2 emissions.

I swell with pride to be an American whenever he speaks and speaks of lofty goals that actually bring our nation together, protect it, and put her to work.

I admit I wept like a child the day he gave that speech that handed our nation to the idealougues who were out to profit by dividing Americans and 8 years has proven that...I truly believe Bush will not be allowed to go overseas and that he will be censored he will be spared prison only because of the mercy of an Obama administration but he will be secluded on his ranch and told to keep his mouth shut which will not be hard ....now Rove is a different story he will be hounded like hell and even his own side will deliver him up to escape the heat.

Take a look at the German program for solar power. They have it structured so that just about any installation can make a profit over the 20 year program. I think that makes a good jumping off point. We know that we can do it better.

I want the Moon shot program. That being said i want offshore drilling too. Every tool is needed to get this country back on its feet.

The fact that there is going to be a greater need for oil as China grows is a reason for increasing the drilling for oil and natural gas... not decreasing it. It may not decrease the price, but it wil help hold it down until alternatives are available. And of course we will need oil for its other uses.

The rising oil and gas prices is causing a rise in the use of dirty coal around the world to be used in its place. And 50% of the oil is used not as fuel but for plastics, insualtion and fertilizer , asphalt and lubricants.

Everyone who is against offshore oil... should drive 50% less immediately... so you can show your commitment.. and dont heat your homes this winter with heating oil.

And Canada tar sand oil recovery is far worse for the envornment as is coal mning. And there is no clean coal!

DEMs can lose the election on this one!

Regards

77% of the people now favor lifting the offshore ban. Even a majoirty in California and Florida.

Ten other copuntries are drilling in our Gulf. We have 2200 platforms there. No spills in 40 years.

Stampeding to try to produce more oil won't help the economy. It'll only destroy what's left of the habitats that haven't already been destroyed by global climate change and overfishing.

I'm already wearing 4 layers of clothes to keep my heating bill down all winter and don't run my a/c. I hope you join me.

I'm not about to put up with burning any more carbon-based fuel than we can help. My children and grand children are way more precious to me to sit idly by while you want to get this country back on its feet with carbon fuel. Solar. Wind. Tidal. Geothermal.

I'd love it if we were doing as well as the Germans!

Au contrare- drilling in the US creates jobs, increases the tax base, strenghtens the dollasr and our trade deficit by displacing imports. It is a good thing- ask Al how many millions of dollars he made on his Oxy stock but I guess that was needed to heat and cool his 20,000 + square foot mansion in Tn. But wait he bought green credits to offset it. Is it just me or does Al seem just a tad hypocritical? I'm just thankful that he invented the internet or he would be totally worthless.

And you can use those forms of energy to drive Trucks, freighters, barges, trains today or in the next ten years... Not likely...

Your way will hand your kids even more debt and less food... a broke government.. with broken schools... and llkely a lot more coal being mined and burned....a far dirtier alternative. And thats whats happening today. And whether we add to the 2200 Platforms in the Giulf that are ours... 10 Other countries are doing it right now. Your Unilateral approach does save anything for your kids.

The goal is correct, its just how we can get there.... and 77% of the people dont share your desire for a depression and economic collapse... leaving no funds for the change and when people are hungry., cold and unemployed... they will burn what ever they can... things much worse than natural gas and oil.

More importantly extremism will end up getting a Flat Earther being elected and us making no progress like the past 30 years.

No Argument there. MSM never talks about BUSH helping to kill the California mandated Electric cars... just 4 years ago. And ist that tecnology that GM ( also one of the killers) is using in the Volt, my next car!

But high oil prices are reducing the use of Oil... but unfortunately it means more far dirtier coal is being burned in its place.

Again .. if you grow energy, you need low cost fertilzer and that also come from oil.

1. Obama will accept the challenge
2. The US will acheive the goal
3. 100 years from now my great great grand children will be taught in their history classes about the challenge put down by one great man to a country.... a challenge that was picked up by the nations first black president... a challenge that was made into a reality.

Right now history is watching. If Obama picks up the challenge then the events of the next days, weeks and months will be forever imprinted into the fabric of the US concience. If this is to happen then people will look at this time as being one of America's defining moments.

History is watching.

100% of the people want ta major switch to solar, wind and alternative and the Chevy Volt and higher Cafe stds. They want increased use of nuclear.

77% of the Amercian people want the offshore drilling ban lifted in the latest polls.. They want all tools used and developed.

DEMs will lose this and it could cost an election.

There s/b a trade off... they get offshore drilling with all oil having to be used in U.S.. DEMs get the royalty share and lease revenue for developing Solar and wind power. increased CAFE stds sooner, credits for Solar and wind installations. Upgrade of the GRID. The MOON Shot program. A great compromise. You might get them to agree not to drill in ANWAR... which is a barran waste land... hardly pristine.

There are 2200 US platforms in the gulf... 10 other nations are drilling... you are protecting the Gulf... or killing our country? The Gulf waters are fine.. i fish out there all the time. the rigs is where the sea life gathers.

Somehow my post was censored or garbled.

Anyway, Al Gore lied on two counts

(1) He claimed that exploding demand for oil in China would keep driving up the global price of the commodity and that flies in the face of what House Democrats said weeks ago when they claimed that it was speculators, not increasing demand that was to blame for the higher gas prices.
(2) Gore states "And politicians cannot bring gasoline prices down in the short term," but that is not true since Bush reduced the price of a barrel of oil 7% ($10/barrel) just by removing the presidential ban on drilling. If Congress decides to jump on the bandwagon, then we may see further short term reductions.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 07:04 PM on 07/17/2008

No lies from Gore, but definitely some confusion on your part.

(1) The most fundamental reason for oil's price rise is indeed more demand than supply. That is in no way mutually exclusive with the speculators piling more cost on top of that. Both dynamics contribute.

(2) Bush only removed the presidential ban on offshore drilling. He hasn't yet become so brazen as to declare the Legislative ban defunct. He'll have to sharpen up his Evil Emperor stance to pull that off unilaterally.

Mighty harsh of you to call Al Gore's statements "lies", even if you were correct that he was wrong on the facts. Too used to Repugs' spin, eh?

But, everything is a distraction, a noise level category unless we start talking about over population. Yeah, within the last year I made an off-topic comment about this on a relatively large email list I'm on - as a part of a good overall response on something on-topic. All I can say is WOW was it a CONTROVERSIAL thing to say!

So many retarded people took it as a personal attack on them because they have families of 6+.

As a result, the noise apparently drove hundreds of people away from the e-list and now others are pissed off at me for having brought it up. -shrug- What's a person to do?

Frankly, though, I think that the reason they responded so violently is that deep down in their hearts, they know I was right....
