Just after taking the stage at Daughters of the American Revolution Hall in Washington, D.C. Thursday, former Vice President Al Gore thanked a packed house for attending his speech on how to combat climate change. And then he pointed to a couple of special guests: Libertarian Presidential Candidate Bob Barr and Black Eyed Peas rapper will.i.am (he of the now-famous "Yes We Can" YouTube video in support of Barack Obama).

Gore thanked will.i.am for making the trip from California, and praised Barr for his serious attention to the issue of global climate change.

After the crowd settled down, it wasn't long before Gore brought them to rapturous applause when he said, "We're borrowing money from China to buy oil from the Persian Gulf to burn it in ways that destroy the planet. Every bit of that's got to change."

Then Gore threw down his gauntlet: "Today I challenge our nation to commit to producing 100 percent of our electricity from renewable energy and truly clean carbon-free sources within 10 years."

The former vice president said his challenge is achievable and affordable now in a way it wasn't mere years ago, given the rising cost of oil and the impact of increased investment in new technologies. Specifically, Gore cited the fact that silicon needed for solar panels once fetched $300 per kilogram, but now only costs $50.

Perhaps acknowledging rumblings from Democrats who were reportedly worried that the speech comes at a time when Americans are more interested in lower gas prices than environmental lectures, Gore described his challenge as a necessary part of efforts to foster economic development and improve national security.

"Our dangerous over-reliance on carbon-based fuels is at the core of all three of [our] challenges -- the economic, environmental and national security crises."

Story continues below

Later, Gore claimed that exploding demand for oil in China would keep driving up the global price of the commodity, no matter how much new drilling or exploration is undertaken by the United States. "And politicians cannot bring gasoline prices down in the short term," he said.

Gore admitted that major obstacles stand in the way of his challenge. He noted that the nation's power grid is not sufficiently strong to deliver renewable energy to all parts of the country, but he said "it has to be upgraded anyway." Much more threatening to his proposal, Gore said, was our "sclerotic" politics that only takes "baby steps" instead of decisive action.

"But I've begun to hear different voices in this country from people who ... are hungry for a new, different, and bold approach," Gore said.

Outside the forum, a cavalcade of anti-Gore protest organizations lined the streets, trying to make their counter-arguments. Lyndon LaRouche's partisans handed out a glossy flier entitled "The Implications of the Gore Hoax for International Policy." Other wags took up mock-collection plates to pay for Gore's own carbon footprint. But inside the hall, Gore's references to such past government efforts as the Marshall Plan and President Kennedy's call to reach the moon tapped a vein of enthusiasm in the crowd that resulted in a standing ovation as he left the stage.

UPDATE: In a statement released after Gore's speech, Barack Obama chimed in:

"For decades, Al Gore has challenged the skeptics in Washington on climate change and awakened the conscience of a nation to the urgency of this threat. I strongly agree with Vice President Gore that we cannot drill our way to energy independence, but must fast-track investments in renewable sources of energy like solar power, wind power and advanced biofuels, and those are the investments I will make as President. It's a strategy that will create millions of new jobs that pay well and cannot be outsourced, and one that will leave our children a world that is cleaner and safer."

Gore has done a good job here in America. What he needs to do is go to Russia, China, and India and spread his message.

If we stopped buying foreign oil tomorrow - we wouldn't need to spread any message. The value of oil would drop like a stone in water and the message would be loud and clear.

Obama's speech on the Iraq war and war on terrorism was excellent, displayed a coherent and realistic vision on how to change our strategy and was probably superior to any foreign policy speech Gore gave when running in 2000.

Really? You think? I disagree. I'll bet Obama will lead the charge once in office. Problem is, he has to get in office first. If we don't put him there just imagine how bad this crisis will be four years from now. McCain will put every oil rig to turning night and day, and we'll be paying $5, $6, $10 a gallon for gas. The Republicans are totally committed to the status quo because it is their cash cow. It's how they, and their friends, keep making money and getting rich no matter what happens to the rest of us. Oil goes up and they just reset the pumps. What do they care? They're making the same amount of money regardless of the price of oil. What a deal right? Do you really think the Republicans are going to let go of this without a fight? I believe they will do everything in their power to stop Obama. Legal or illegal.

In the north, in winter, there will not be enough solar to supply all the heat needed for homes and, moreover, wind would be too erratic to provide it. The power from the desert south west would also be at its lowest, so there is a shortfall, particularly if the winter is long and cold. We need to take just a little of he heat that floods over us in summer and store it ready for the winter ... see www.dlsc.ca for an attempt to do this on a community scale and with a relatively low-tech approach.

In California, there's mayn windmill fields that have to be partially shut down from time to time, because there's too MUCH electricity being generated. All we need is the means to deliver that power where it's needed, and to increase the size of the fields. The wind never stops blowing in the Altamont Pass area...never!

Al was up to almost becoming president not only ONCE, but TWICE: 1. in 2000, and 2. in 2007, when he fetched the Nobel Prize AS WELL AS the Oscar, and everyone wanted to CROWN him president in 2008.

Yet, he quit both times, instead of standing up to his challenge.

It's going to take time to PERFECT these tweaks in our new "greeen quest". Some will work, some won't. Look at all the mistakes we STILL have with regular cars. They NEVER perfected the "standard" car, yet we still buy and drive them. There is going to be "problems" and trade-offs with anything coming up on the horizon. Al Gore may be a hypocrite, but that doesn't make a rat's ass worth of difference to me because it just deflects the MAJOR ISSUE of our time. We need to start somewhere and it might just be with someone who is "struggling" too with all these new lifestyle choices. Slowly, the "leading voices" will change, as we change more and more. So please, ALL YOU NAME CALLERS, quit trying to DEFLECT issues with the "perfection excuses".

It annoys me how people think this issue is about Al Gore. It's not. It's about the future of the United States, and the future of our whole planet. Earlier on when Gore made his announcement, MSNBC the whole time showed a graphic of how much it will cost to covert to renewable energies. How about displaying the cost of NOT converting to renewable energy? How about the longterm prices of buying oil forever as opposed to renewable energies like solar which require only the initial investment?

This issue is the reason why we're in a war in Iraq, and why we're sabre-rattling with Iran. It's all about the oil. We are terrified that Iran will block the Strait of Hormuz. We were terrified that Saddam controlled too much oil, and had stopped taking dollars as payment for Iraqi oil. That's why we don't really care about Afghanistan, and keep only a token force there. That's why we diverted to Iraq. Oil is the reason Islamic terrorists have endless funding.

I can't believe how short-sighted some people are about this issue. I mean, it wasn't long ago when Republicans thought this whole issue was bogus. They were going around telling everyone to just drive Hummers and giant SUV's, and not worry about what Al Gore said. Now, the Toyota Prius hybrid is the top selling car. The people are learning, even if most Republican politicians refuse to.

I agree with this 100%.

On the other hand, I'm still baffled and infuriated by many (probably 50%) of the people here in MT that think that global warming is bogus and that we're simply going through a natural warming period that has nothing to do with carbon emissions. They also think that oil is a limitless resource. If you drive a Prius here, you're seen as a gullible hippie instead of making a wise economical purchase.

will.i.am has been making music since the late-80's and was signed to Ruthless Records, Eazy-E's old record label.

He released three albums before Fergie ever joined the group. He is one of only two producers of the Black Eyed Peas. I don't know where you get the idea that Fergie is a "musician". As she's a singer and doesn't write any of the tunes. Actually, will.i.am writes all of Fergie's music as well.

Solar, wind etc. for electric power don't reduce the need for oil, they reduce the need for coal and perhaps nuclear power. So go for it by all means, but oil is primarily used for transportation fuel, some for heating oil. Electric vehicles could reduce the need for oil for transportation, but we have to discover the battery technology that would make the big impact. In addition the transition to the new technologies will take time and while that is taking place we will be using coal, nuclear, gas and oil. If we reduce the amount of oil we buy overseas we reduce the flow of $$$s out of the country, this is a win win.
It is a minor issue, but Mr. Gore is a venture capitalist for green energy and what he is pushing for will also make him boku dollars. That is OK, but it would be nice if he bothered to mention that, just to be on the clean side.
The currently available solar technology is pretty lousy, and if over commit to its use before the new, more efficient and lower cost technologies are developed and commercialized. Overcommiting to this will position us at the high end of energy cost in the future and this will be an economic burden. We are ready for nitche solar, for distributed power but not for a national grid.

It would be nice if Al Gore practiced what he preaches. In a report by Drew Johnson president of the Tennesse Center for Policy Research, Mr Johnson stated " Al Gore is a hypocrite and a fraud when it comes to his commitment to the environment judging by his home energy consumption".
Since taking steps to make his home more environmentally-friendly last June, Gore consumes an average of 17,768 kwh per month, that's 20 times more electricity then the average american household.
Since becoming the mostwell-known global warming alarmist, Gore saw his personal wealth increase by an estimated $100 million due largely to speaking fees and investments related to global warming hysteria.
Action speak louder then words.

If Gore can increase the value of his portfolio & do good for the environment at the same time I would call that a HUGE success (win/win is a perfect sustainable business model). I'm glad to see Obama firmly behind these positions & look forward to seeing Gore/ Kerry/ & Obama pulling together in the best interest of this Country. I know there are some damn fine Republicans out there as well who would love nothing more than to see this Country put back on the right track (even if it is under a Democratic administration). As for gas prices... Gas will begin to wane in demand as new technologies take hold & we start using common sense in diversifying our systems. We can do this if we simply have the will.

Gore purchases ALL of his electricity through special designated sources of Green Energy in a program made available by the TVA. His purchases help to develop the Infrastructure is that will eventually bring the cost down for everyone.

In other words, if every Kilowatt Hr or energy he purchased came from Windmills [ or comparable], why should should you care how much energy he consumed?

The rest of us are stuck purchasing electricity which 50% is produced by burning coal.
