Just after taking the stage at Daughters of the American Revolution Hall in Washington, D.C. Thursday, former Vice President Al Gore thanked a packed house for attending his speech on how to combat climate change. And then he pointed to a couple of special guests: Libertarian Presidential Candidate Bob Barr and Black Eyed Peas rapper will.i.am (he of the now-famous "Yes We Can" YouTube video in support of Barack Obama).

Gore thanked will.i.am for making the trip from California, and praised Barr for his serious attention to the issue of global climate change.

After the crowd settled down, it wasn't long before Gore brought them to rapturous applause when he said, "We're borrowing money from China to buy oil from the Persian Gulf to burn it in ways that destroy the planet. Every bit of that's got to change."

Then Gore threw down his gauntlet: "Today I challenge our nation to commit to producing 100 percent of our electricity from renewable energy and truly clean carbon-free sources within 10 years."

The former vice president said his challenge is achievable and affordable now in a way it wasn't mere years ago, given the rising cost of oil and the impact of increased investment in new technologies. Specifically, Gore cited the fact that silicon needed for solar panels once fetched $300 per kilogram, but now only costs $50.

Perhaps acknowledging rumblings from Democrats who were reportedly worried that the speech comes at a time when Americans are more interested in lower gas prices than environmental lectures, Gore described his challenge as a necessary part of efforts to foster economic development and improve national security.

"Our dangerous over-reliance on carbon-based fuels is at the core of all three of [our] challenges -- the economic, environmental and national security crises."

Later, Gore claimed that exploding demand for oil in China would keep driving up the global price of the commodity, no matter how much new drilling or exploration is undertaken by the United States. "And politicians cannot bring gasoline prices down in the short term," he said.

Gore admitted that major obstacles stand in the way of his challenge. He noted that the nation's power grid is not sufficiently strong to deliver renewable energy to all parts of the country, but he said "it has to be upgraded anyway." Much more threatening to his proposal, Gore said, was our "sclerotic" politics that only takes "baby steps" instead of decisive action.

"But I've begun to hear different voices in this country from people who ... are hungry for a new, different, and bold approach," Gore said.

Outside the forum, a cavalcade of anti-Gore protest organizations lined the streets, trying to make their counter-arguments. Lyndon LaRouche's partisans handed out a glossy flier entitled "The Implications of the Gore Hoax for International Policy." Other wags took up mock-collection plates to pay for Gore's own carbon footprint. But inside the hall, Gore's references to such past government efforts as the Marshall Plan and President Kennedy's call to reach the moon tapped a vein of enthusiasm in the crowd that resulted in a standing ovation as he left the stage.

UPDATE: In a statement released after Gore's speech, Barack Obama chimed in:

"For decades, Al Gore has challenged the skeptics in Washington on climate change and awakened the conscience of a nation to the urgency of this threat. I strongly agree with Vice President Gore that we cannot drill our way to energy independence, but must fast-track investments in renewable sources of energy like solar power, wind power and advanced biofuels, and those are the investments I will make as President. It's a strategy that will create millions of new jobs that pay well and cannot be outsourced, and one that will leave our children a world that is cleaner and safer."

I've been in mourning for eight years.
Having said that, he would never take the job. He doesn't need the sliming again from the media, the right and the uneducated numbers of Americans who don't vote for what matters.

Finally. I’ve been waiting for someone to come out with a “moon shot” challenge to the climate/energy crisis. Now we need a similar “moon shot” challenge to create a viable, affordable alternative to the current automobile engine technology. We need to eliminate the need for petroleum products to run our cars/busses/trains/airplanes and create a renewable energy source. Until we do that, we are going to continue to have to rely on foreign oil to our economic detriment. That challenge is the boost Detroit needs to revamp the automotive industry and put US back on top. Granted, there will always be some dinosaurs (pun intended) who refuse to give up their gas guzzling, smog belching, environmentally incorrect vehicles. Let THEM pay whatever the going rate will be for gas. Give the rest of us an alternative.

I was just there and it was pretty awesome. The former veep is a tremendously electric speaker, both passionate and clear-eyed about the issues. He was like a rock star, getting standing ovations both entering and exiting, people cheering all over the place.

I was particularly struck by the flood of young faces packing the hall all the way back, their enthusiasm for the man and the message palpable, impatient to get started and change the world. According to the book Millennium Makeover this is the generation that will put problem-solving over partisan politics, who will bring about a new civic political realignment to meet the challenges of this age. I think I felt a small measure of that energy this afternoon. It's clean, renewable, and unstoppable, baby.

From Rasmussem:

However, McCain fares better against Obama than he does against two other prominent Democrats. New York Senator Hillary Clinton leads McCain by eight points, 50% to 42%. Former Vice President Al Gore, the Democratic presidential nominee in 2000, leads McCain 50% to 43%.
These numbers help explain why Election 2008 is competitive even though events so heavily favor the Democrats -- because the Republicans are on course to nominate their strongest possible general election candidate but the Democrats are not. Perhaps even more importantly, the data suggests that voters don’t see a potential McCain Administration as the third term of President Bush.

"Most of our security problems with other nations come from the US putting our resource needs ahead of other countries. Would the US have anything to do with the Middle East were it not for its large supply of oil?"

Of course not, all you have to do is look at our uninterest in Africa...

Gore is right of course, we need changes, and we need them quickly...

The whole problem is that the best policy is not really going to be politically popular. The best way to deal with current gas prices and energy is actually to dramatically raise the gas tax and couple it with a canceling tax cut to workers who earn under 150k or so. You also would need to protect industries such as airlines, taxis, and trucking by making them exempt from the tax. The result should be a significant drop in demand, a net zero change to the budget of every day Americans, and lower shipping prices that lead to lower food prices. In addition, you should have a spill over fund from those whose earnings are to high to receive the tax cut. That money could be used as a fund for alternative fuels. If you combine that with Gore's plan and additional standard budgetary funding for alternative fuels and you should rapid change in how we power our country.

Of course in the short term this type of plan should see negative impact on the auto industry, but most already have long term plans that would fit into this reality. Since alterations in government policy would be causing their struggles you could conceivably consider a small bail out of sorts to try to negate the impact they will feel.

If America wants to reduce energy costs, they're going to have to sacrifice. Not just in driving less to use less oil (some can't afford to drive to work), but must be willing to sacrifice now for the goal of energy independence. Personally, as a grandparent, I consider it an honor to do anything I can to be a part of the solution -- to leave a safer, cleaner planet for my grandchildren and future generations. It's time WE look beyond to something bigger than ourselves. Obama is right and is our BEST HOPE to lead us forward to meet the challenges we face.

To briefly address this: the oil crisis is not a national security crisis! Unless you are Washington politician bent on turning it into one - and treating the legitimate demands of every other nation for access to the resources necessary to human life as a threat to your survival.

Conservation is easier than nonsense phrases like public investment, and does not require $150 billion dollars over the next ten years to realize.

All the United States government has to do to achieve massive conservation of energy, and reduce its output of greenhouse gasses, is reduce the work week to four or even three days - bing! No crisis.

Wow Charley2u you just seem to know everything, except thre oil problem here in America. Oil is a national seurity crisis for America. How much briefing on security have you received? This is not just hot air. America is a ticking time bomb.

To call the oil crisis a national security crisis, is to give Washington the power to kill people for oil. It is to give Washington the power to dictate to you how you live your life.

If you want to give them that power, that is fine.

I prefer to live in a nation where we don't kill people for oil.

Just a personal preference.

"How much briefing on security have you received? "

Oh, I did not realize I had to be "briefed" on security before I could have an opinion on what our elected officials should be doing.

In that case, I take everything back.

Charly2u there will always be the flat earth mentality trying to hold back the march of progress. You are a prime example. The cruelest irony is that this country went to war to steal Iraqi oil fields at the very time in history we should have been forging ahead on weaning ourselves from fossil fuels. It is fitting that at the dawn of the 21st century we must look to new technology for survival and abandon the old fossils of every kind. Bring it on Gore!

Each day the US work week is shortened, saves 8 million barrels of oil on commuting alone.

8 million barrels is equal to a tenth of daily global consumption.

It can be implemented tomorrow.

When you can produce those saving with "new technologies" tomorrow, not in ten years, I will stop believing in a flat earth.

I couldn't disagree more. Our oil crisis IS a national security crisis!! We are emboldening tyrants in Saudi Arabia, we've invaded Iraq for oil, etc., etc.

Yes, we need to conserve. But conservation alone will not fulfill our energy needs. We do need to become energy independent.

"conservation alone will not fulfill our energy needs. We do need to become energy independent."

Read again what you just wrote, as it makes no sense. If you use less, you need less. I you need less, you become less dependent. If you become less dependent, you don't need to kill people for oil!!!!!!!>
