CNN:

John McCain has made a recent habit of telling audiences at his fundraisers that he is "the underdog in this race."

But is he so far behind Barack Obama that he'll spend serious time and money competing in ...Nebraska?

"We are the underdog," McCain said at a finance event in Ashland, Nebraska Wednesday night. "We are not taking the state of Nebraska for granted. I'm going to campaign here and compete here and I need your help. We need to organize. We need to get out the vote. We've got a headwind because our economy's tough."

According to the CNN Electoral Map, Nebraska is solidly red, a "safe" state for McCain. The state hasn't voted for a Democrat in a presidential election since the Lyndon Johnson landslide of 1964.

As a Nebraskan I doubt we'll end up with a majority for Obama, but it will be close, and I beleive we don't do winner take all with our measely 3 electors, so we could give O something.

But this could be a year of surprises and Nebraskans may only vote Red in football season this year. We also have agood chance of electing not only a second Dem Senator, but a progressive one in Scott Kleeb.

My husband is from Nebraska, and I know many folks there that hate the wars, and will not not for McCain.

It seems likely that McCain will exhaust himself having to campaign in states once thought reliably Republican. This is not a man with an excess of energy.

Does McCain know where Nebraska is, or will he need help finding it?

Let's face it. McCain can't really afford to take any state for granted. ( Maybe Mississippi and Kentucky, we know they're 50 years behind everyone else)

And Washington, Oregon, and California. Of course, it will do him about as much good as it did to speak at the NAACP yesterday.

It should be noted that Nebraska splits its electoral votes by congressional district.

Yes, all 3 of them.

Even if we go for the big O, it won't QUITE have the power of a California.

I think they have 5 EV. 3 Reps and 2 Senators.

Sen. McCain probably thought he was firing up his base, but saying he has to campaign in Nebraska is more likely to scare the GOP more witless than they already are.

I pity the Nebraskans.

Good strategy. Every candidate should have to work for our vote.
