Today, John McCain's campaign debuted a slickly produced, nearly 8-minute long video that shows what they perceive to be Barack Obama's constantly shifting positions on Iraq. Featuring selected soundbites from various cable TV appearances that are smash-cut next to inconsistent-sounding other soundbites from speeches or debates (and even local media appearances from before he became a Senator), the video is intended to show that the Illinois Democrat routinely puts political expediency before national security concerns.

And while some of the juxtapositions do indeed show Obama taking different positions -- such as on troop funding, or whether or not the "surge" strategy could be expected to reduce violence -- the overall claim that the presumptive Democratic nominee always subordinates national security concerns to political expediency would seem to be undercut by his initial opposition to the war at a time in which many Democrats thought of military action as a fait accompli, and therefore safe to support.

Asked after the official debut of the video whether Obama had ever shown any courage on the issue of Iraq, or if he'd ever risked political capital to stake out a national security position, McCain's senior foreign policy adviser Randy Scheunemann declined an opportunity to sully Obama's entire record, telling the Huffington Post that Obama's calculations on Iraq began "when he started running for president."

Asked whether it was fair to note that McCain has also flirted with inconsistency, such as on the matter of how much he supported President Bush's leadership, Scheunemann scoffed "I don't think you're gonna find many" pro-Bush statements from McCain on Iraq dating after 2003.

But, as Think Progress reported in April, McCain took to a popular conservative radio host's talk show to claim that "no one has supported President Bush on Iraq more than I have" -- a position at odds with McCain's more routine line that he was unafraid to take political hits for opposing the president's previous, failed strategy after 2003.

And of course, this week McCain has been accused by the Obama campaign of flip-flopping on the question of whether more U.S. troops are needed in Afghanistan. But Scheunemann fought back against that claim, saying: "He always been open to more [U.S.] troops. He's never said he was opposed to additional forces. He's been calling on NATO to send additional forces. ... But the situation has deteriorated to a point where we need to send additional forces. The preference is to work with NATO to get 'em. But clearly there's gonna be a mix of U.S. and NATO forces."

And while it's true that McCain has never directly "opposed" sending more U.S. troops to Afghanistan, before this week he was in the habit of saying that the surge of troops in Iraq had not hurt America's effort in Afghanistan -- and that NATO troops were the only kind of additional forces required. Considering that troop deployment between Afghanistan and Iraq is something of a zero-sum game given the over-stretched military, supporting a surge in Iraq is, practically speaking, very much like opposing sending more troops anywhere else. As Joint Chiefs Chairman Mike Mullen said in June: "I don't have troops I can reach for, brigades I can reach to send into Afghanistan until I have a reduced requirement in Iraq."

The bottom line, of course, is that in the course of winning a primary and then campaigning in a general election, both candidates have shaded and emphasized different statements and parts of their respective records, some of which can be embarrassing when cut together. But at the debut of the new McCain video, it was clear that at least one Republican surrogate thought the party had caught Obama cold. McCain's fellow Arizona Senator John Kyl stood at the side of the room at the Capital Hill club as the video played for reporters, a sly grin spanning the length of his face.

What is it that McCain and Co. don't get about a candidate who opposes the war from the outset wanting to end it. The surge is working.(?) Okay, and? The war is borderline illegal, still violent and too damn expensive. The surge is working! Whatever!

So much for integrity. McCain announced earlier, no dirty tricks. Maybe he thinks these smash cuts are just satire.

Take a second to study the video frame (featured at the top of this page) that disproportionately lingers on the letters "A AL QD." Doesn't this seem a bit fishy? It appears to function as an anagram, subliminally associating to the words "Al Qaeda," while superimposed over Barack Obama's gloomy-horizon profile.

It reminds me of the subliminal ads they ran against Gore in 2000, in which they flashed the word "rats" over his image.

McCain's whole campaign has been about Iraq..I am wondering is he running for the president of Iraq...all you hear is War or the threat of war. Without war McCain is an empty suit.

I would take it a step further and say that without war, McCain is a fish without water. He breathes war, he sleeps war. War runs in his family's blood, and without it, he lacks a sense of purpose and familial fulfillment.

Wait a minute...are you telling me that the candidate who adamantly opposed the GI Bill until it became clear it was going to pass anyways, and then shameless postured himself as its champion, even going so far as to say that he regrets that Webb and others didn't take it even further...are you telling me that that candidate now has the utter audacity...the unmitigated gall...to throw something like this in my face?

Is this what you're telling me?

This was really boring. Obama's campaign can answer this by putting out an ad on all of the stupid things that Mccain has said which is everything that has come out of his mouth. That would be entertaining.

Like we say in the 'hood, "Don't start nuthin', won't be nuthin' " Now these clowns want to put out videos?!? On YouTube?!?! Are they INSANE?!?! That's like ASKING for a butt-whuppin'!!! There is so much footage of inconsistent McCain that you can make a full-length movie and still have footage left over. I'd just say to the millions of Internets-savvy Obama supporters, let 'er rip and show these McCain knuckleheads what an ole school YouTube video beat-down looks like!

What an absolutely dumb piece of advertisement. I do hope that the republicans air that crappy video and waste their money.

I can't believe I wasted about 8 minutes watching that.

If that is all that they have on O'bama they are in a serious world of hurt. If viewers watch it and get the same response from me, I know it won't be anything effective against O'bama.

McCain is a waste of money and time. Wake me up when it's time to vote the Repugnicans out. This does not include the Republicans who had sense enough to put their country over party by moving to Obama.

Only a right-wing fanatic would be impressed with this video. The objections are trivial, sophomoric. I actually hope the RNC eats huge holes in their budget with this ridiculous ad. Bring it on, I say.

You must be joking. This only confirms what moderate dems have been saying all along. BO is a fraud, he was waffling all over the war, painting HRC as a warmonger and promising a withdrawal plan he had no intention of keeping. HRC may have voted for the war (which BO said he would have done as well in conflicting statements) but at least she stuck by every vote with conviction. BO has no convictions. He says whatever it takes to keep you in his pocket.

Keep your heads in the sand. The majority of the American people won't be excusing this as readily as you do.

Please stop the lies - BO has NEVER said he would have voted for the war. He said he did not know what he would have done politically but he DID say that in his opinion the case for war with Iraq wasn't there. And he said this in the way he did to avoid detracting from Dem nominee John Kerry since he was asked this question during the 2004 convention. You claim she stuck by every vote with conviction?!? On the very Iraq issue, she said "had I known then what I know now, I wouldn't have supported the war." Doesn't sound like conviction to me, particularly for someone who did not read the NIE.
The stats don't lie - moderate Dems have been applauding Obama and voted for him in the primaries. Not to sound condescending but it's the undereducated crowd that he has problems with and that's not surprising.

As usual, the picture you paint is far from accurate.

Remember when you said Hillary's debt would be paid off by the middle of July? ("Oh and BTW, her debt will be gone by mid-July. Then she won't have to suffer your powerful scrutiny anymore". Posted 03:13 AM on 07/10/2008) Today is July 17 and her web site is still running their same old, usual plea for money: "Hillary needs your support. Contribute today to help us pay down the debt from one of the hardest-fought primary races in history." Looks like you were wrong!

And remember when you said June wouldn't be a successful fund raising month for Obama? ("You'll be even sicker after you see O's June fundraising totals." posted 07/16/2008 at 17:43:59) Well it seems he raised $52 in June, which is pretty damn good by anyone's accounting. Wrong again!

You have been dead wrong about both of your claims and this is a case in which two wrongs definitely do not make a right! If one was inclined to be unkind, one might point out that you do not seem to know what you are talking about. But I think I will just let people draw their own conclusions.

Obama double-talks and thinks we are too stupid to figure it out. And some people are.
I loved the ad--They need a video with his statements about Iran being no threat then a grave threat, that he'll vote no on FISA, comments about Israel, ban on guns, abortion...no wonder he voted present 129 times--he can't take a stand on anything.

Nader/McKinney/McCain--all more qualified than Obama.
