There is a sense of elation in the Obama campaign as it was announced that their candidate raised $52 million in June. It's a massive haul for the presumptive Democratic nominee -- $3 million short of the historic mark he hit earlier in the cycle but much larger than the $22 million that John McCain brought in this past month.

The majority of donations, Obama's campaign manager David Plouffe wrote in an email to supporters, were of the small variety, with the average amount being $68.

An aide to the Senator was ecstatic when asked about the June numbers and said of an earlier Wall Street Journal report that Obama had raised "only" around $30 million: the paper is "embarrassed."

Greg Sargent at Talking Points Memo noted that the June haul puts Obama on track to achieve his goal of raising $300 million during the entirety of the general election - a total needed to match the likely loot of McCain and the RNC. And yet, Obama and his allies at the DNC still lag behind their counterparts. The Democrat has $72 million on hand, compared to the roughly $100 million brought in by the GOP.

"We remain at a massive disadvantage to our opponents," Plouffe wrote in an email before asking for additional $25 donations. "As I mentioned in my video message earlier in the week, the McCain Campaign and the Republican National Committee finished June with nearly $100 million in the bank.

We can't stop now. It's going to take everything we've got to defeat John McCain and his allies in November."

UPDATE: The DNC follows suit and releases its fundraising figures. They're not quite Obama-esque, but they are fairly impressive for an organization that has been criticized over its lack of cash. Overall, in June, the DNC brought in more than $22 million and has more than $20 million on hand.

This means that, combined, Obama and the DNC have $92 million to spend at this point in time -- $3 million less than GOP.

Will someone please post WHY all you goofy-eyed people are SO CRAZY about a man who knows so very little about our government. He is familiar with Africa! His allegiance is to AFRICA, NOT THE United States. How much of your money do you think he will send to AFRICA, Kenya and all those other countries that he loves? IF he gets elected, look for your money to disappear QUICKLY, because he is going to raise your taxes as soon as the Congress will let him, and of course the Congress being mostly Democrats, he will have NO problem getting ANY of his ideas passed. Does that sound a little like the last 7 1/2 years with a Repuclican Congress? I hope you agree with everything he says and does, SO you cannot complain about a person YOU VOTED FOR!

The major reason that no one's talking about that McCain has so much in that war chest after going broke last year is because he's feasting on the public financing system. It accounts for almost 90% of McCain's war chest. That money comes directly from the taxpayer's pocket, proof that unless both candidates are publicly funded, it's nothing more than an up-front money injection. Sure, he now falls under public financing limitations, but people can keep on donating to the RNC and all those conservative 527s that are springing the worst personal attack ads across the country. At least with Obama, his campaign is funded by individuals who are donating because they choose to. I didn't choose to donate to McCain with my tax dollars, but I have no choice in the matter.

That is why the public financing system is completely broken. McCain is gaming the system just like he did when he took public financing in the primaries, then opted out illegally half way through when he realized he needed to raise more money in order to win.

I was ecstatic too! Obama Family, you had me worried for a minute. I donated earlier today. Hope to see us break a record for July; like 70mil. Oh yeah! Last time we hit 55mil was in March, if I am not mistaken.

It does not appear that Obama's team manipulated the press! The article states that the WSJ got it wrong and perhaps was trying to manipulate the public. Maybe they were guessing, projecting or speculating. And it begs the question, what the hell else are they misleading us about in this insane financial climate? Are they underestimating the depth and breadth of this recession or the number of banks that will fold or the
FDIC's ability to cover depositors??

remember, these figures are for June. that's not press manipulation, it just doesn't reflect the most recent trends, because verifying these sorts of figures takes time.

He was supposed to bring in 100 million a month. The proper headline is Obama fundraising 50% lower than expected.

So you say she's not going to be on the ticket, in any position?

Anybody else care to weigh in?

Maybe a lot of people unhappy about some of Sen. Obama's shifts on FISA (which makes me weep), campaign financing, support for (the secular portions only) of faith based initiatives, and Iraq (according to canards from McCain camp picked up by MSM) are aware of the First World War cartoon of (forgot first name) Bairnsfather "If yer knows of a better 'ole - got to it." A very small copy of the cartoon is shown in this article:

http://www.firstworldwar.com/poetsandprose/bairnsfather.htm

Bairnsfather was one of Bill Mauldin's precursors and may have influenced his Willie and JOe cartoons from WWII. [Until I checked this out, I had thought the line was Mauldin's but apparently not.]

On a list of a dozen reasons why Obama will win in November, #5:

5. The Money Factor: A corollary to the Organization Factor. Obama will have lots of it and will be able to raise more and more of it. To those who say that money can"t buy love or office, agreed, at least in terms of the former. But money can certainly help win office. It is especially helpful if you have a good candidate, a good brand as they say, to sell. Obama is such a brand.
