There is a sense of elation in the Obama campaign as it was announced that their candidate raised $52 million in June. It's a massive haul for the presumptive Democratic nominee -- $3 million short of the historic mark he hit earlier in the cycle but much larger than the $22 million that John McCain brought in this past month.

The majority of donations, Obama's campaign manager David Plouffe wrote in an email to supporters, were of the small variety, with the average amount being $68.

An aide to the Senator was ecstatic when asked about the June numbers and said of an earlier Wall Street Journal report that Obama had raised "only" around $30 million: the paper is "embarrassed."

Greg Sargent at Talking Points Memo noted that the June haul puts Obama on track to achieve his goal of raising $300 million during the entirety of the general election - a total needed to match the likely loot of McCain and the RNC. And yet, Obama and his allies at the DNC still lag behind their counterparts. The Democrat has $72 million on hand, compared to the roughly $100 million brought in by the GOP.

"We remain at a massive disadvantage to our opponents," Plouffe wrote in an email before asking for additional $25 donations. "As I mentioned in my video message earlier in the week, the McCain Campaign and the Republican National Committee finished June with nearly $100 million in the bank.

We can't stop now. It's going to take everything we've got to defeat John McCain and his allies in November."

UPDATE: The DNC follows suit and releases its fundraising figures. They're not quite Obama-esque, but they are fairly impressive for an organization that has been criticized over its lack of cash. Overall, in June, the DNC brought in more than $22 million and has more than $20 million on hand.

This means that, combined, Obama and the DNC have $92 million to spend at this point in time -- $3 million less than GOP.

There's a serious problem with our electoral system when 92$ million is not enough for the DNC. It's a horse race between the two parties-- and the only people who can bet are the fantastically wealthy. NOT the majority.

Don't get excited about Obama's huge number of small-scale donations. Though most donors have given small amounts, most of the ACTUAL MONEY received has been from large sums, from corporate and wealthy donors. A bunch of small donations doesn't equal a few huge ones.

The trend is that 0bama will win the election, getting more than twice as many votes as McCane. McCane's best will not be good enough. :-)

Yes, because--despite all evidence to the contrary--the public recongizes and respects the smarter, better candidate. That's why Gore and Kerry swamped Bush.

Clearly, the public won't stand for an inept fool who doesn't know his stuff.

It helps, too, that the average voter relates so intimately with Obama. His Regular Guy cred is very, very high.

We're in great shape. We may as well relax as we coast to, and through, November. We've got it in the can.

For those who might have hit the direct contribution limit ($2,300/election), you can still contribute to 0bama through a political committee (such as Moveon.org) at least an additional $2,700.

Limits can be found here:

O began campaigning saying, "We"re not going to take PAC money. We"re not taking special interest money. We"re not taking lobbyist money. We are going to be funded by the grassroots we"re going to set up a grassroots organization, and all across the country people have responded like never before". Clever and duplicitous. Is O a populist or (the ultimate in shutting the people out), a "Unitary Executive"-loving proponent of the "republic" part of "democratic republic"?

O said small donations would enable him to say "No" if a large donor wanted something in return for that donation. We presumed that meant he would be beholden to us small donors. How could that be? How would that work? Our vote? We vote based on what he says, & before he became the presumptive nominee, his speeches were general, no details, ambiguous. Everyone (left, right, center) thought he was promising their ideology, the left especially: "I WILL END THE WAR IN IRAQ, conditionally, and those conditions are in fine print and seldom make it into sound bytes".

He still needs money, & the left has shut him off. They caught on, with his "refining". While his speeches imply liberal, his record is conservative Democrat. He's just another politician. It's business as usual in Washington and America. The people, once again, are getting hosed.

Typical republican response. In a republican's screwed up world it ok for their candidate to have two, three or five time money advantage when you factor in the RNC but when a democratic candidate for the first time beats them at their own game, they cry foul.

SweatBetty,

"Mac's adviser points out that Mac said, when the war was not going well, he'd rather lose an election than lose a war. "

You keep posting these talking points, but you apparently haven't received an addendum memo.

What exactly is "winning the war"? How does one "lose the war"? When there isn't a person in the nation who understands why we're even there, how can you win or lose it?

Again... please define, for the rest of us, by what measure the US "wins" or "loses" this war.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 01:10 PM on 07/17/2008

A stable, independent Iraq with secure borders and a democratically elected government.

Next up, Iran. Winning there merely means no nukes.

Eventually, President Mac may turn his attention to South America.

Uh huh... So your definition of winning a war is "A stable, independent Iraq with secure borders and a democratically elected government."... meaning that this was the justification for going to war.

Which means there are no less than 40 other countries on this planet that fit that category.

Your belief is that, at the cost of 4000 American and 150,000 civilian lives, we should do this again 40 more times?

Tsk tsk, so this means O wasn't on the corner with a tin cup in hand? Oh where are those folks who were gloating about the story on Plouffe asking for donations? You know the ones stating "I'm not giving him dirt because of FISA?" OUCH! And Mr.Stein you are truly pathetic, interesting that in your bottom feeding story last week you didn't indicate anywhere that the message by Plouffe was a monthly one sent out to O's supporters who are on his mailing list, your "dirt digging" article tried to pretend that because Plouffe had created a video verses an email message that O had "cash woes" now your trying to save face, shame on you! I urge O's supporters to split their donations in half to help the DNC as well as O.

Hardly surprising that an elitist like John McCain with seven homes and a wife who inherited a brewery fortune isn't short of cash for his campaign. Very surprising that someone like Barack Obama without the connections and the money can play just as hard with nothing but small online donations.
