NAHARIYA, Israel — Thousands of Israelis prayed and cried at funerals Thursday for two soldiers whose return from Lebanon in black coffins touched off a nationwide wave of anguish.

Across the border, a second day of celebrations swept Lebanon for the five militants freed by Israel in exchange for the soldiers' bodies. The five prayed at the grave of a slain Hezbollah military commander and vowed to keep fighting Israel.

The contrast in moods was tangible. In Israel, sorrowful pictures and sounds of the funerals of the two soldiers, Ehud Goldwasser and Eldad Regev, dominated TV and radio broadcasts through the day, the tears of the widows and parents shown over and over.

"Saying farewell to Udi and Eldad," read Channel 2's on-screen banner under video from one of the funerals as the station played a sad song of the death of a soldier usually reserved for Memorial Day.

Soldiers carried Regev's casket, draped with the blue and white Israeli flag, into the military cemetery in the northern city of Haifa. A military rabbi chanted as Regev's father leaned on another family member, who comforted him. Thousands of other mourners trailed behind.

Regev and Goldwasser were captured two years ago in a cross-border raid by Hezbollah fighters _ an attack that led to a 34-day war between Israel and the Islamic militant group in southern Lebanon.

Regev's brother, Ofer Regev, bitterly denounced Hezbollah for refusing to say during the two years whether the two men were dead or alive.

"Our enemy has been exposed as the complete opposite of us, a cruel mirror image of everything that is human and acceptable among human beings," he said.

Earlier in the day, soldiers from Goldwasser's reserve unit, who asked to be called up to duty for the day, carried his casket to the grave, lowering it into the ground in Nahariya, another northern town.

His widow, Karnit, held on to her father-in-law as each wiped away tears. "Maybe time will allow the bleeding wounds to heal," she said.

In keeping with Jewish tradition, Goldwasser's father, Shlomo, wore a shirt ripped at the front to signify mourning.

Over the past two years, Karnit Goldwasser had led a campaign to secure the release of her husband and Regev, frequently traveling abroad and meeting with world leaders, even confronting Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad at a New York news conference last September. The campaign made her one of Israel's most recognized faces.

The prisoner exchange with Hezbollah closed a painful chapter from Israel's 2006 war against the militant group.

Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, whose handling of the 2006 war was widely criticized, did not attend either funeral, although he was present at a ceremony Wednesday when the soldiers' remains were returned.

The swap with Hezbollah raised questions in Israel about its policy of bringing back its soldiers, dead or alive, at almost any price. Critics argued that the uneven exchanges with militant groups only encourage more abductions.

But Defense Minister Ehud Barak, his voice breaking, told soldiers at Goldwasser's funeral that if "the worst will happen to any" of them, Israel would "make every possible and legitimate effort" to bring them home.

"To our enemies, I say today that Israel seeks life and peace but will not be deterred from waging fierce war against cruel terrorism," he added.

In Lebanon, attention centered on Samir Kantar, who spent nearly three decades in an Israeli prison after being convicted of killing a father, his 4-year-old daughter and a policeman during a 1979 attack. He denied killing the little girl.

He and the four other freed militants visited the grave of Hezbollah commander Imad Mughniyeh, who was killed in a car bomb blast in Syria in February. Hezbollah blamed Israel, which denied playing any role in his killing.

"We swear by God ... to continue on your same path and not to retreat until we achieve the same stature that God bestowed on you," Kantar said. He referred to Mughniyeh's "martyrdom," saying: "This is our great wish. We envy you and we will achieve it, God willing."

Later in the day, hundreds of people welcomed Kantar in his hometown of Abey, a mountain hamlet 10 miles south of Beirut.

"This time yesterday I was in the hands of the enemy. But at this moment, I am yearning more than before to confront them," Kantar said of Israel.

As part of the exchange, Israel also returned the bodies of 199 Lebanese and Palestinian fighters killed over the past three decades. The remains were taken to a Hezbollah facility near the Beirut airport Thursday, and officials said forensics experts began DNA tests seeking to identify the bodies.

The convoy of eight trucks carrying the remains was stopped often along the way in Lebanon by throngs who showered the coffins with rice and rose petals.

Israeli government spokesman David Baker denounced the celebrations in Lebanon, particularly the warm welcome given to Kantar.

"Kantar is a brutal child murderer who instead of being rejected upon his return was cheered and greeted like a rock star, and this is disgusting and deplorable," Baker said in a statement.

Any reading of the news, on any day, of the Middle East and reading most of the comments here, only serves to confirm the dismal truth that the status quo between Israel and its neighbors, including the nascent state of Palestine, is doomed to continue along the same path it's been on for more than sixty years for at least another sixty and, probably, multiples of sixty beyond that.
No matter how many reasonable people there are on both sides, it only takes a few psychopaths from either one to start the blood flowing. And, it seems they'll run out of blood before psychopaths.

No Moncar, Israel merely has to pull back to its borders. A forty some-odd year occupation is more than enough. It is illegal. That's where peace has to begin.

Meanwhile,
Nobody but the families mourned the last two American troops killed in the pointless Iraq War, which receives as little press coverage as possible.

The commandments state *thou shalt not MURDER*. This applies to muslims as well as christians and jews. It applies to everyone under international law. If one invades a nation, abducts two citizens, even if they are soldiers, and then murders them, it is murder. Jews fought alongside Arabs to free Palestine from British colonial occupation. The Arab received 72% of the territory (now Jordan) and Israel, created by UN decision, was 28% of that territory. If a nation (Lebanon) celebrates a murderer it has serious problems, religious, spiritual and legal. A-Sharq il-Awsat mocks Hassan Nasrallah, who came out of his bunker to celebrate a murderer and then, like a mole, moved back into his underground abode. Israel was created after WWII, and jews were allowed to repatriate to a country they were chased from by the Roman Empire. That same Roman Empire created a religion and hegemony that attacked nations (crusades and colonialism) all over the world. After WWII there were uprisings against colonialism all over the world, a.o. in Indonesia, in Africa, and yes, Israel belongs in that same category. The creation of Lebanon followed from that same movement, which had an earlier start, like Zionism, in the 1800's.

As an Arab, I would like to extend my sympathy to the families of the Israeli soldiers killed. War is ugly and the ME conflict will never be solved by war. The Lebanon war was orchestrated by Olmert with the help of the U.S and other European countries. 1200 Lebanese civilians and over 160 Israeli soldiers were killed. The outcome was more deaths and everyone was back to square one. Israel has to understand that just like you mourn your dead, Arabs too have feelings for having their lands occupied and over 10,000 Arabs imprisoned in Israeli jails. Hizbullah "the Party of God" has won the war and proved it's a powerful force that accomplished what no other Arab army accomplished. I pray that the Israeli public stop pushing for war with Iran cause the consequences will be 10 times worse. Peace

The war in Lebanaon was caused by the Hezbollah terrorists kidnapping an Israeli soldier, not by W-Bush. You were dishonest with your reason for the hostilities.
Israel did not lose to Hezbollah, another lie.
As for your sympathy, thanks, but no thanks. Folks like you have one goal, the elimination of Israel.

ME conflicts would also not be solved until Arab nations cease promote psychopathic hatred of Jewish culture and peoples; stop teaching Protocols of Elders of Zion in schools and stop glorifying Jihadists.
There will be no peace for Arabs, until Arab peoples will throw off the shackles of oppressive religious leaders and oppressive and thieving political leaders, stop believing the neurotic propaganda that Jews are the cause of all their suffering; begin educating their populations and decide to join the rest of the world in peaceful and productive activities.

Now that we've heard from the trolls of Wendover Baptist Church, may we proceed with mourning the dead men, women & children from both sides of this 60 year old conflict in a bit of quiet grief?

To GZLives:

The arabs rejected the UN partition of 48' because it awarded more than 50% of the Ottoman Province of Palestine to a small minority of Jews.

Christians, Muslims and Jews co-existed there as one state, just like they did in the arab world before Israel's creation, there was no need to divide Palestine and confiscate Palestinian homes to make way for incoming immigrants.

It's the state of Israel that immigrated, not the other way around.

Israel was restored i 1948, not created.
The population of Jerusalem did not include a Jewish minority. IN fact, since around 1880 the city had a Jewish plurality.

Oh Wykle, you are a victim of Arab propaganda

Yes I know, you believe they lived and co existed there as one State just like in the fairie tales

Are you really going to sit there with a straight face and deny the rabid anti semitism of Arab leader in Palestine al-Husayni and his followers the Palestinians ?

November 2, 1943 Himmler's telegram to Mufti: 'To the Grand Mufti: The National Socialist movement of Greater Germany has, since its inception, inscribed upon its flag the fight against the world Jewry. It has therefore followed with particular sympathy the struggle of freedom-loving Arabs, especially in Palestine, against Jewish interlopers. In the recognition of this enemy and of the common struggle against it lies the firm foundation of the natural alliance that exists between the National Socialist Greater Germany and the freedom-loving Muslims of the whole world. In this spirit I am sending you on the anniversary of the infamous Balfour declaration my hearty greetings and wishes for the successful pursuit of your struggle until the final victory.' Are you serious!? To associate the Palestinians as friends of Hitler is not accurate at all, in fact its so ridiculous. Just because one obscure Mufti was friends with him does not represent the Palestinians at the time. The Palestinians are not responsible for the Holocaust nor did they have anything to do with it.

There was virtually NO ANTI-Semetism in the Arab world before the creation of Israel and that is a fact, to even suggest that they were onpar with the Europeans brutal treatment of its Jewish citizens is absurd.

Please, stop going on to your Zionist conspiracy theory websites for your facts.

Fair enough, but consider:

1) The Ottoman Empire was on the losing end of WWI. Their territories were controlled by Britian and France, and they could divide them up as they saw fit.

2) European and Asian borders were redrawn after WWII. The Mid East was no exception.

3) 60 years and 6 wars later, Israel's still here, they're Jewish, get over it!

More propaganda to bring out Israel's fullness of humanity. Palestinian funerals happen on a daily basis, just FYI. When they're not hunted down like rabbits, they die of malnutrition, lack of medical care, psychological problems due to an environmental stress from living in a brutal occupation.

Israel recognizes its natural inhabitants as "temporary citizens."

This is an Israel propaganda piece designed by Israel-Firsters to highlight Israeli anguish at the expense of Lebanese anguish.
From the earliest days of Zionism, its European leaders had designs on Lebanon (then part of Greater Syria as was Palestine - and all in the waning days of the Ottoman Empire). They proposed taking Lebanon for the Jewish 'homeland' as far north as the Litani. Their French/British sponsors nixed the idea. Ben Gurion proposed it again to the British in the run up to his 1956 attack of Egypt, and was again rebuffed. When the Jewish colony in Palestine conducted its ethnic cleansing campaign from '47-'49, many Palestinians were expelled into the surrounding nations, including Lebanon. (Lebanese villages too, were cleansed by the Jews.) Other Palestinian refugee victims of Israel fled first to Jordan and were later evicted to Lebanon. Israel has since invaded Lebanon repeatedly and occupied it for more than 2 decades - and still occupies Shaaba Farms.
So blaming Lebanon is like blaming Kuwait for the Iraqi invasion in 1991.

And that's the faction that will eventually drive the Jewish vote away from the Democrats unless the Party disavows this faction and does so strongly and loudly - not because they are anti Israel but because much of it tends to morph into something much much more nefarious.

The Jews here know exactly what I'm talking about.

"Report American soldier funerals first."

Tell me Jews ... how does this post make you all feel?
Does it make you cringe?

The Left won't allow you to have any opinions if it disagrees with their own.

And if you try, they will begin to adopt all the classic slogans and signs your parents told you about. You can't tell me you don't see it everywhere.

Here we have the typical "Jews are disloyal" or "American Jews are more loyal to Israel then America" motif

Once they are dead and maimed and mentally incapacitated everybody turns away from them. Support the troops is only to trick them to join the military. There are so many homeless, mentally ill and destitute veterans on the streets of my town. Shame on the U.S.

I always get upset whenever I read the comments on any news from Israel. Of course Palestinian mothers cry - so do wives and sisters and children. We mourn our dead on all sides of every conflict and all over the world.

This was a sad, very sad, day for the families of these two young soldiers and for the people of Israel. Why can't we just leave it at that and be sorry for these families.
