Jon Stewart Measures Candidates' Success Wooing Hispanics With Dobbs-O-Meter: "The Angrier Lou Dobbs Gets, The Better You're Doing"

On Thursday night's "Daily Show," Jon Stewart instituted a "Dobbs-o-Meter" to measure the presidential candidates' success in wooing Hispanic voters. "The best way to measure success in wooing the Latino community," Stewart says, "is by using the Dobbs-O-Meter: the angrier Lou Dobbs gets, the better you're doing." Stewart showed clips from the past week, during which the candidates reached out to Hispanic voters through the National Council of La Raza, and with each statement showed Dobbs' head growing larger and redder until it eventually exploded.

I guess it's in the eye of the beholder. I find Stewart to be consistently hilarious and right on target and can't understand how you don't. I know people snap and jab at each other on this site and I'm frequently guilty as charged, but not this time...I'm genuinely interested here... what pulls your personal giggle chain?

I agree with about 85% of what Lou Dobbs says...I find him difficult to take when he goes on rants against the southern border/yes­..its needs to be regulated.­.but he goes OFF...and the other day - he jumped on the GOP mantra of Off shore drilling blaming democrats/­Gore...etc­...all the while NOT saying that this is in no uncertain terms NOT going to lower our prices any year soon. ....I did not care for that BS...as Lou should know....AM­ERICA NEEDS ALTERNATIVE ENERGY SOURCES...­NOT OIL OR NUCLEAR.

Been watching Dobbs on and off for awhile now. As it gets closer to the elections he certainly seems to skew towards the right wing side of things and your point about alternative energy is a very good example. The man isn't stupid and he knows full well that drilling for more oil isn't going to put a dent in gas prices in the next 15 years. He's basically a liar.

Doesn't speak well does it? How even his colleagues on CNN show him the slightest bit of respect is also beyond me. Guess they like bigotry and hatemongering as well. When Dobbs and people like Limpballs lose their show, I'll feel better about some of my countrymen and women.

Can't say as I'd agree about Dobbs being a racist. As a legal immigrant, I see his point. I obeyed the law and got the correct paperwork, jumped through the correct hoops, pay my taxes. His words are usually carefully chosen to include "illegal" in his rants. As far as I can gather he has nothing against foreigners, Central American or otherwise, but he does have a problem with people breaking the law. Whenever I hear somebody defending illegal immigration I have to ask, "What part of the word 'illegal' are you not understanding?"

Undocumented workers are here because the corporations want them here. They want workers who are afraid of being deported on a whim and who will work long hours at dangerous jobs for little pay, with no health care, no benefits. They want to turn America into Saudi Arabia -- an elite class that employs guest workers and treats them as little more than slaves.

I do think we need to concentrate on teaching the English language to the citizens of this country, tho. I mean, even our president can't speak it. Let's try, modestly, for English and a good public school system again before we take the bull by the horns about learning other tongues! At this point, almost everything in America is a disgrace.

I wish someone would ask the American citizens who are Hispanic what THEY want instead of assuming that they all want to move their country people up here to take their jobs. You might be surprised at what I hear from the legal immigrants I know.

I've noticed here at this somewhat liberal blog that most of those who I recognize as Progressive are also against amnesty or other schemes. They are, in short, against illegal immigration and have spoken out with clarity on this matter. From their other posts I know that they aren't just right wing nuts or xenophobes, they despise Bush, the War and the corrupt Republican philosophy as much as anyone. Thus this subject is not as simple as for the undocumented good, against the undocumented xenophobic, bad heartless scum.

What everyone must recognize is we have come to this point by "Free Trade" causing as much economic despair in Mexico et. al. as it has caused here and by the Bush Administration for 7 years failing to enforce the laws concerning the hiring of the undocumented. Prosecutions fell by 95% for these unscrupulous employers thus we have 12 million here illegally.

This situation has caused great harm to those Americans at the bottom of the economic ladder. Employers have not had to pay real wages or offer benefits because of an endless supply of slave labor. Many trades that once paid livable wages, meat packers and construction, have seen their wages fall by half with business putting the difference in their pockets.

Thus there is a Hobson's choice. Which group do you throw under the bus? My choice is to send those here without legal status back. The source of their desperation lies in their home countries not here.

He also blames the Dem Congress for everything like he truly doesn't understand you need a majority of votes for most things and actually there are not enough dem to override the Rep's.

Thank you sir, you hit it right on the head. His show is indeed futile. Especially because of its biased one sided bent. He nor his show is credible. This debate has largely been one-sided, unfortunately people are being manipulated into thinking immigrants are the sinister ones. They're doing what anyone would do if they lived in a dire situation but there was opportunity elsewhere to climb out of that legal morass of incompetence on both sides of the border. E.g. if a CEO loses his job, he's going to go lead the next company who pays him the most and wants his services. Why? because he still has bills to pay, a family to provide for, and also because he wants to sustain his lifestyle. It's human nature to just survive in this world whichever way you can. But I digress, there is an eloquent side of the story that nobody is telling in the media that needs to be addressed and heard because too many people are being hoodwinked and continuing to perpetuate xenophobia, racism, hatred, and prejudice by Mr. Dobbs and his show (and most others - on all major 24hr news shows i.e. fox news, cnn, msnbc) is very disgusting and appalling.
