Conan

How old is John McCain? So old, the jokes about it are getting old.

So at a taping Friday night of NBC's "Late Night with Conan O'Brien," the host asked the Republican presidential candidate for some new material.

"We all agree on a take on you, which is your seniority," O'Brien said, as McCain, 71, pretended to fall asleep in his chair.

Speaking for all late night comedians, O'Brien said, "we're tired of this take on you," and asked the Arizona senator to give them some fresh material.

"Do you have a kooky uncle, do you have bad breath, webbed toes, anything?" O'Brien asked.

"All of the above," McCain answered before offering up alternative fodder.

"I was able to get shot down, intercept a surface-to-air missile with my plane," said the former Navy pilot and Vietnam War prisoner of war.

"People don't really laugh at that," O'Brien pointed out.

Story continues below

McCain got in some jokes of his own, poking fun at "the cable monsters," his new name for cable news networks.

McCain, who has already had one cable movie made about his life, was then subjected by O'Brien to a series of casting suggestions for another movie about his quest for the presidency and his current search for a running mate.

Playing McCain? Tim Conway. Playing one-time Republican rival Mitt Romney? "Any local weatherman," said O'Brien.

Watch clips from his appearance:

That's SOOOOOO funny! My cousin is in Iraq risking his life but I'm glad McCain can find the humor in the situation. This is only the most important election of the century and the very existence of our nation is at stake. Laugh it up.

He can 'fall asleep' and make fun of being old but, in the end he is still old.
P.S. I am older than him and I can do things strenuously for a short time but wear out quickly. That's not a shame. That's growing old. Keep moving to stay alive. His sedentary job as Senator doesn't help his health.

I missed the part where he pretended to be in touch with reality...

Very funny. Are any Republicans ever in touch with reality. Oh that's right reality only has to do with serving their own personal best interests.

TO: Senator John McCain July 19, 2008

No, Senator John McCain is asleep. Where has everybody been?

They have set up cruel and inhuman laws for job seekers and poor. In Pittsburgh, Pa they have panhandling ordinances that ban people from panhandling 25 feet from a place of religious assembly. They have panhandling ban 10 feet from bus stop, food vendors. In Houston,Texas they are considering Mayor Laura Miller's suggestion to ticket peple who give to poor since the total ban on panhandling in whole city was not effective. September 2005 In Atlanta, Georgia Mayor Shirley Franklin wants food providers to not serve food to poor in public places or parks. Though her Executive Order is not a legal sanction this has deterred many Churches and communities of faith to not serve food with their food ministries. Hawaii has a total ban on homeless ot being able to be on public property in whole state. In Fresno, Ca they have a barbed wire surrounding an area called Dunk Tank where they put homeless on public display. All this so terrible! From Dream Denied January 2006 Report on The National Coalition for the Homeless website nationalhomeless.org Also in Publications,Reports Feeding Intolerance,Myths Report it states,"In many cities there is not enough facilities for soup kitchens to feed people 3 times a day 7 days a week. Food pantries give only one foodbox a month.

I think he needs to work on his delivery - perhaps a summer working in the Poconos. Then he'll be ready for "Last Comic Standing". Which is good thing, because after November he's going to need the work. Yeah, he'll still be drawing pay for his Senate seat (mostly from lobbyists) but he hasn't shown up for a single vote on Afghanistan for over two years - do you really expect him to start showing up after another crushing defeat?

The folks at the rest home nearly wet themselves over this bit. Of course, they had to watch it the next morning, which is when McCain saw it.

I would expect anyone with more intelligence than the average kitchen sponge would like the campaign for the presidency to be conducted by serious, intelligent, adult candidates. Unfortunately, that's not what we've gotten. One candidate has the requisite character; the other would do better to paint his face white, put a red rubber ball on his nose, and join some second rate carnival.

It should be obvious which is which.

it's been loaded for barack since last winter and mccain knows it. obama is meeting substantively with world leaders while mccain is parodying himself. mccain has for a while been trying to signal that he knows he's a formality and obama's is the only real campaign. he wants to show people that he's in on the joke. further evidence: mccains virtual concession speech before the naacp, and the head of state status bestowed on obama by the sheer overkill of press coverage. since last winter, any indication that barack hasn't yet been nominated- much less elected- has appeared like a small print warning on an aspirin bottle.

""During (Johnny) Carson's tenure, the Tonight Show could be said to have created President Bill Clinton. The little-known Arkansas Governor had become a petty national joke after giving an abysmal 32-minute nominating speech for Massachusetts Governor Michael Dukakis at the 1988 Democratic National Convention that put its audience to sleep. Clinton's line that drew the largest applause: "And in conclusion…."

"Carson revived Bill Clinton's career and made him a national star by inviting him on the Tonight Show to tell jokes: "It wasn't my finest hour," said Clinton, "It wasn't even my finest hour-and-a-half."""

Clinton also played a little jazz number on his sax on that show.

You should maybe Get A Life!

clinton mostly appeared on the arsinio hall show that was very popular at the time. that's where he played the saxophone. it was a late show like carson's. it may also have been the setting for the "boxers or briefs" question.

He's got all the attributes and experience to make it a second GOP clown in a row in the White House, but only if the voters go "nuts" for him.
Jessie?... Jessie?...anything to say about that?

Ole Simple Simon, still 'acting out' with full coverage. Grown Men shouldn't revert to being simple, especially while running for President...

He's okay; I like that he has a sence of humor. That was part of Bush's appeal in the last two elections. He just seemed like a regular guy. McCain has some of the same appeal; his major problem is he's just old as hell.

Some old people when they hit a certain age, start acting like kids. McWhiney is one of them. He'll do just about anything to get attention. This behavior is very common in 2 y/os as well... the terrible twos!

The strategy is to try to get us to laugh at his age and difficultly remembering, lack of understanding economics, lack of energy when we should be very afraid of his deminished and constantly deministing mental abilities.

People still watch Conan, Jay Leno and the like?

Those jokes are so crusty and old and belong to the 20th Century.

Jon Steward, Stephen Colbert are always great and worthy of watching and everything else is crap
