On Thursday, John McCain communications director Jill Hazelbaker raised eyebrows when she appeared to make a frontal attack on Barack Obama's supposed purpose in visiting Iraq and Afghanistan, describing it as a "first-of-its-kind campaign rally overseas."

Upon initial review, it proved too spicy a riposte for the spokeswoman's own boss, who told reporters aboard his Straight Talk Express that he was personally "glad" for Obama's visit to Iraq and Afghanistan, and that he would have to "talk to" Hazelbaker about her remark.

When team McCain regrouped, however, perhaps they found that it would be tough to simply blame Hazelbaker for popping off, since the campaign had already lent the attack a more authoritative air by blast-emailing out her comments under official seal. So, later Thursday, as First Read reported, McCain attempted to distinguish between the Global War on Terror stops on Obama's trip, which they are now supposed to be fine with, and the speeches in Europe -- such as in Germany -- which McCain is comfortable describing as having "political flavor, to say the least."

That's a nice bit of political footwork, so long as the McCain campaign can stick to the steps and only accuse Obama of politics when he's standing in Europe. But there are signs that, as Obama's foreign trip approaches, they simply may not be able to resist the urge to attack Obama's visit to Iraq in particular.

This morning, the McCain campaign emailed out a Wall Street Journal editorial that noted "a media entourage as large as some of his rallies" will be in along for the ride with Obama in Iraq. "He'll no doubt learn a lot, in addition to getting a good photo op," the Journal also opined, subtly making the same charge as Hazelbaker regarding the trip's ostensibly political roots.

And at Thursday's unveiling of a new anti-Obama campaign video, several Republican members of Congress who had been rounded up by the McCain campaign ventured onto Hazelbaker-like turf, as well.

Right after noting that Obama's upcoming visit to Afghanistan will be his first, North Carolina Senator Richard Burr told reporters: "I think it's safe to say that as this trip becomes reality, it's also reality that it's more about politics than it is about fact-finding or about exploring the relationships abroad for our country and others in the future."

Rep. Eric Cantor trod similar ground when decrying the amount of media attention planned for Obama's trip, saying: "Is this type of coverage fair? This is nothing but a political stunt."

And, finally, Rep. Marsha Blackburn made reference to the "702 guardsmen" and "15,000 men and women from Fort Campbell" serving abroad before adding that she hoped Obama would "spare them the photo-op," if his mind is "already made up."

Her last line before handing things back over to McCain senior foreign policy adviser Randy Scheunemann? "I hope he will not insult [the troops] by telling them it is politics and not their good work that is going to influence his policy."

So, while McCain himself may only choose to accuse Obama of playing politics when he gives a speech in Germany, as of now, it's far from clear that he's instructed his surrogates to do the same.

Of course it's a stunt, and a pretty good one too.

The problem is that it is a stunt that McCain dared him to do. So first he criticizes him for not having visited Iraq, and now he is criticizing him for visiting Iraq. Can John McCain breathe without flip flopping on something?

Fair?? Hey the media does what it wants... Obama does not pay them to fly with him, their news corporations pay for them to be there because its the top news headline right now..
So its not an issue of "Fair".. I seem to remember LOTS of media coverage on McCain's trip and nobody complained about media coverage fairness!!

McCain is acting as though if it was for him, Obama would have NEVER gone to the Middle East. He even said Obama has NEVER spoken with Petraeus, which is also a lie. Obama asked him questions at the hearings. This man is so outrageous that every word he says need to be highly scrutinized for honesty.

I'm sorry if Obama going overseas is a stunt, then what was it when McCain went? The Republicans are flailing around because they are worried that this trip could make Obama look more presidential then Mc Cain.

First McCain says Obama has never been to Iraq or Afghanistan and has no foreign policy experience. Now he says Obama visiting foreign countries is a "stunt". You can't have it both ways Senator. You got yourself in this mess; now you have to put up with 10 days of Obama-centric coverage world wide. I can't stop laughing.

Senator Obama is the Chairman of the Senate Subcommittee on Foreign Affairs (relating to Europe). It makes total sense for him to include European countries in his trip. It can only increase his knowledge in ways that will aid his Chairmanship. Also, WHEN he becomes President, he will already be familiar with some of the European leaders and citizens, and they with him. It's a win/win situation.

A press release highlighting Jill Hazelbaker comments is still on his website. this is a strategy of McCain. He just doesnt want to look like HE is the one saying it, but it is being orchestrated by him.

For all McJohnnie's experience in "foreign policy" he got it wrong on Iraq and still has it wrong on Iraq. He had it wrong on Afghanistan. However, on the bright side he's now listening and taking advice for Sen. O. So it's not a stunt when Sen. O travels abroad during an election but not when McJohnnie does? And Johnnie if you remember you're the one who told him he should go.

John McSame has "more" foreign policy experience. ROFL

And his record of good judgment is NIL!

Has Bush made you feed safer?
Well if you compare it to the way you will feel with McCain as Potus, YES!

This is too funny. Now that Sen. Obama is finally finding time after a long primary campaign to fit a this previously planned trip into his schedule, the reps. are truly freaking out. I guess I would too if my opponent commands the attention of the top broadcasters instead of the regulars or someone already on assignment there. Sen. Obama, will be given national coverage from the morning slots to the evening slots on all major channels, as well as cable. HeHe, well I guess Sen. Mcc will have to step his game up to get noticed the week Sen. Obama is gone.

Anyways the MSM may be about photo opt, but it's obvious that Sen. Obama is about taking care of business since he has 300 people considered experts in foreign policy keeping him abreast of what's happening throughout the world. Gees I would like to be a fly on the wall in each venue he attends to get the complete picture instead of highlights. The reps. can call it what they will, but I only envision Sen. Obama showing the world that we do have someone with an intelligent mind and an understanding of world needs who can lead the US. That's what I think the reps. fear the most, that the world will see one with competence ( Sen. Obama) and one without (Sen. Mcc).

No, a "stunt" is going to Iraq and touring a market with helicopter and ground support, and a bulletproof vest, and then claiming Iraq is safe and happy.

Well said. Personally, I think McCain is a little miffed because he is, in a way, responsible for this trip that will be a worldwide media event. I suppose his trip to Iraq and Columbia that wasn't really widely covered by the media didn't help. How ironic is that? Thank you, Sen. McBush.

I made reference to that shopping trip, also, a little while ago. It took place in April 2007.

And then... at 1:53 p.m. EST 7-18-08 ... On MSNBC, I listened to US. Ambassador Ryan Crocker utter THIS statement:

“In April 2007 there were car bombs going off in Baghdad two or three times a day”

Well which is the "TRUTH", Mr. Crocker ... the Baghdad markets WERE safe ... or they WEREN'T safe ... in April 2007???

And Andrea Mitchell was busy fumbling with all sorts of graphs showing how SAFE Iraq is NOW ... and I'm sure there were all sorts of graphs showing how SAFE Iraq was THEN, ALSO?

THIS IS REDICULOUS! NOTHING THE BUSH ADMINISTRATION SAYS IS THE TRUTH!

BRING OUR TROOPS BACK HOME!!!
