On Thursday, John McCain communications director Jill Hazelbaker raised eyebrows when she appeared to make a frontal attack on Barack Obama's supposed purpose in visiting Iraq and Afghanistan, describing it as a "first-of-its-kind campaign rally overseas."

Upon initial review, it proved too spicy a riposte for the spokeswoman's own boss, who told reporters aboard his Straight Talk Express that he was personally "glad" for Obama's visit to Iraq and Afghanistan, and that he would have to "talk to" Hazelbaker about her remark.

When team McCain regrouped, however, perhaps they found that it would be tough to simply blame Hazelbaker for popping off, since the campaign had already lent the attack a more authoritative air by blast-emailing out her comments under official seal. So, later Thursday, as First Read reported, McCain attempted to distinguish between the Global War on Terror stops on Obama's trip, which they are now supposed to be fine with, and the speeches in Europe -- such as in Germany -- which McCain is comfortable describing as having "political flavor, to say the least."

That's a nice bit of political footwork, so long as the McCain campaign can stick to the steps and only accuse Obama of politics when he's standing in Europe. But there are signs that, as Obama's foreign trip approaches, they simply may not be able to resist the urge to attack Obama's visit to Iraq in particular.

This morning, the McCain campaign emailed out a Wall Street Journal editorial that noted "a media entourage as large as some of his rallies" will be in along for the ride with Obama in Iraq. "He'll no doubt learn a lot, in addition to getting a good photo op," the Journal also opined, subtly making the same charge as Hazelbaker regarding the trip's ostensibly political roots.

And at Thursday's unveiling of a new anti-Obama campaign video, several Republican members of Congress who had been rounded up by the McCain campaign ventured onto Hazelbaker-like turf, as well.

Right after noting that Obama's upcoming visit to Afghanistan will be his first, North Carolina Senator Richard Burr told reporters: "I think it's safe to say that as this trip becomes reality, it's also reality that it's more about politics than it is about fact-finding or about exploring the relationships abroad for our country and others in the future."

Rep. Eric Cantor trod similar ground when decrying the amount of media attention planned for Obama's trip, saying: "Is this type of coverage fair? This is nothing but a political stunt."

And, finally, Rep. Marsha Blackburn made reference to the "702 guardsmen" and "15,000 men and women from Fort Campbell" serving abroad before adding that she hoped Obama would "spare them the photo-op," if his mind is "already made up."

Her last line before handing things back over to McCain senior foreign policy adviser Randy Scheunemann? "I hope he will not insult [the troops] by telling them it is politics and not their good work that is going to influence his policy."

So, while McCain himself may only choose to accuse Obama of playing politics when he gives a speech in Germany, as of now, it's far from clear that he's instructed his surrogates to do the same.

obama wants to see Europe. he should pay for it. Not my contribution or tax money or $135 oil. his Gov wants to send troops into the Chicago war. What's his position on that? Maybe he can hitch a ride to China with Pres Bush and get a real peace briefing.

Okay. I understand you don't like Obama. But if I may ask: What are you talking about? What
Chicago war. I grew up on the south side and still have family there. This is the first I have
heard about a war going on there. Should I warn my sister and her family?

`Al-Qaeda is on their heels but not defeated,'' McCain said today at a town hall meeting with General Motors workers in Warren, Michigan. ``I also predict that they will make an attempt, as we get into election season, to make more of these spectacular kinds of attacks'' by suicide bombers to destabilize the government of Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki.

Now McCain has become Ms. Cleo...

I think they are afraid that the situation in Iraq is not going to be seen as rosy as they have been reporting back home!

They are afraid that O is going to see that Iraq is still a clusterf^@k and that Afghanistan is every bit as bad as O has always said was!!!!

They are shivering bc they know once he takes this trip, and sees that Gen Betrayus is nothing more than a parrot in uniform, they are done for!!!!

I cannot beleive how they are trying to turn this thing around on BO when their party candidate told him he should and needed to do it. I wonder what is would have been if he was going with John McCain as originally asuggested by McCain. MSM and his party and surrogate would have painted this much differently for sure, with the spin in the rethugs favor of course :-|

y'all just don't quite get it. Obama HAS been to Iraq. He HAS chatted with TROOPS and officers. That was BEFORE the escalation (there, I said it, it was what it WAS). Now, everyone is saying 'The escalation is working." Okay, if it's working, then what is this "Honor" bit that McCain has going when confronted by a MOTHER with a child over bringing troops home NOW. "Sooner or later", just doesn't cut it. Obama's already SEEN parts of what this debacle has rendered. NOW he's going BACK to Iraq and to Afghanistan. O, by the way, you McCain supporters who are masquerading as something else-this trip was PLANNED FOR OVER A YEAR. The PLAN was to go after the primaries were over. It is NOT Obama's fault that the primaries ended on June 3. So-the trip got postponed until NOW-in the 'down time' between primaries and conventions. I'd LOVE to see what your criticism of Obama would have been if he'd packed a suitcase and gone to Europe and Iraq and Afghanistan on June 4!
Don't you get it? EUROPE HAS HAD ENOUGH OF BUSH AND BUSH SURROGATES LIKE McCain! Not only is there laughter echoing off the walls of a cave 'somewhere between Pakistan and Afghanistan', it's rather loud all around Europe.

This coming from the man who "strolled" through a market with other republicans looking to buy cheap carpets while in Iraq...claiming that it was safe as could be (with how many Blackhawks flying around?)

Who's pulling stunts? Yeah...chalk this off as another "pot calling kettle black" moment for McSame.

Is this the same Iraq trip that John McCain insisted Obama take?

Guess there's no pleasing John McCain, and nothing would please me more than his November defeat, and the bigger the better.

Well, it is a stunt. This is a man who saw that there is a way of winning elections without having to be qualified for the office. He and his team have gamed the system, the way he has operated all his adult life. The shame is that the public, with the great assistance of our integrity-challenged media- , has fallen for this. With any luck, he will lose, and the US will see that the elective process needs to be taken a lot more seriously.

Oh, I when you mentioned winning elections without being qualified and gaming the system I thought you were referring to George Bush!

If you are concerned about the elective process, perhaps you should raise the case of Florida in 2000 and Ohio in 2004, electronic voting, partisan state officials affecting the elections, etc.

So is there a school or a degree in "presidenting"? What exactly are the qualifications? I would just like to know what qualifications make Bush such a great president?

you're calling a Mccain win "luck"?

I'm assuming you don't live in the US. Because for us, it would certainly not be anything like "luck".

Yes of course... it's a selfish political stunt when Obama goes, but it's a show of political leadership and foreign politicy expertise when McCain goes to Iraq and makes an ass of himself.
What it's really starting to look like is that the McCain camp is jealous, and petty, and small-minded, and nothing more than one giant pile of hypocrisy.

Wow, this is the first time i have ever read someone accusing a winner of a primary to have "gamed the system"... So winning outright is somehow cheating?

I guess helping the poor and less fortunate in Chicago was also somehow "gaming the system"...

Geez naluca do you live in Bizarro world or something? Your comments have a touch of the crazy...

Looks like a 'no win' either way you look at it.
He is damned if he does and damned if he don't.
Flippin repubs need to stop yelling 'wolf' all the time before MSM gets tired of looking for shadows.

Strange how McCain's trip to Columbia wasn't called a "stunt". I think their just jealous that the Obama camp is getting a lot better press on their trip than McCain did on his.

McCain is one tracted especially on Iraq. This is the same thing that Bush is doing. Everything else just falls by the wayside. McCain=Bush. Same theme, same thing.

As I've said before; the republicans are shaking in their boots! They're scared to death of Senator Obama's race to the White House. They fear the LANDSLIDE victory that Senator Obama is going to win by come November.
