WASHINGTON — Sen. Barack Obama 's trip to the Middle East and Europe marks his first high-profile step onto the international stage, a campaign-season audition of sorts for a presidential hopeful pledging a new era in diplomacy and an end to the U.S. combat role in Iraq.

"The stakes are very high for Obama," said Lee Hamilton, president of the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars and a supporter of the Illinois Democrat.

While Obama currently leads in the polls, "foreign policy is one area where they (voters) have their doubts" about him, Hamilton said.

Campaign officials have announced stops in Jordan, Israel, Germany, France and England. Obama also has pledged to travel to Iraq and Afghanistan this summer, but aides have not said whether those war zones will be part of the same trip.

The trip is planned to put Obama into settings often occupied by presidents, including formal meetings with foreign leaders, public speeches and visits to historical sites.

"It's an opportunity for him to sit down with the international leaders with whom he would have to work as president of the United States, and discuss some of the issues," said David Axelrod, the campaign's senior strategist.

Obama has been critical of Bush's foreign policy in his campaign for the White House, but Hamilton said the Democratic presidential nominee-in-waiting must tread lightly. "Criticizing foreign policy in Washington in one thing. Criticizing it in Berlin" is another, he said.

"There will be a lot of eyes on him, and we know that," Axelrod said, when asked about the risk of politically damaging errors.

Less than four months before the election, Obama's trip comes at a time when he leads Republican rival John McCain in many polls but runs no better than even on many foreign policy questions.

In a recent Washington Post-ABC poll, 72 percent of those surveyed said McCain knew enough about world affairs to serve effectively as president, compared to 54 percent for Obama.

The two men were in a statistical tie when voters were asked who was more trusted to handle the situation between Israel and the Palestinians or the war in Iraq.

Whatever he says or does, Obama will be under scrutiny from Republicans eager to raise doubts about his readiness to handle foreign and defense policy.

"This trip is about politics. It's a way for Obama to try and compete on foreign policy," said Jill Hazelbaker, McCain's communications director.

McCain has left the country three times since becoming the likely Republican nominee. A trip to Canada and a second excursion to Colombia and Mexico were to express support for expanded trade. In March, he also visited Israel, Jordan, Britain and France.

At home, Obama has struggled to consolidate his support among Jewish voters wary of his commitment to Israel.

And while Obama is expected to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Ohlmert, Palestinian officials have announced he will visit the West Bank. McCain did not meet with Palestinians in his most recent visit to the Middle East in March.

"We welcome this meeting," Saeb Erekat, a Palestinian negotiator, said recently. He added that if Obama is elected "we hope he will stay the course between Israel and the Palestinians in reaching peace and a two-state solution." Bush is trying to broker a peace agreement between Israel and the Palestinians before leaving office in January.

Obama stirred controversy in June with a speech before the American Israel Public Affairs Committee in which he endorsed a two-state Israel-Palestine settlement, yet said Jerusalem should remain both the capital of the Jewish nation and undivided.

Palestinian leaders quickly rejected the statement. "...We will not accept a Palestinian state without having Jerusalem as the capital of a Palestinian state," said Mahmoud Abbas, the Palestinian president, and the next day, Obama backpedaled.

"Well, obviously, it's going to be up to the parties to negotiate a range of these issues. And Jerusalem will be part of those negotiations," he said in a CNN interview. He added that "as a practical matter, it would be very difficult to execute" a division of the city.

Stops in Western European capitals are standard for U.S. politicians seeking to burnish foreign policy credentials, and Hamilton said government leaders are eager to meet the candidate.

Campaign aides have disclosed almost nothing of the European itinerary.

Controversy preceded Obama to Germany when aides sought to use the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin as the site for a speech.

Chancellor Angela Merkel was less than enthusiastic, dispatching spokesman Thomas Steg to say she had "only limited understanding for using the Brandenburg Gate as an election campaign backdrop, as it were, and has expressed skepticism about pursuing such plans."

Obama's campaign spokesman Bill Burton responded that the Illinois senator has "considered several sites for a possible speech, and he will choose one that makes most sense for him and his German hosts."

Constructed in 1791 as a symbol of peace in Germany, the gate stood for 28 years during the Cold War at the heavily fortified Berlin Wall that blocked off communist East Germany's sector of the divided city. Probably the capital's best-known monument, it has been restored as a national symbol for a reunified Germany.

Imagine having, as the representative of your country, a person who can both listen and communicate.

My greatest concern is that the Obama will never have the political power to end the imperial foreign policy. I don't think that any POTUS (even with 2 terms) can reign in the Pentagon and the powerful interests that benefit from Empire (Isreal, global corporate interstes, defernse contractors, neocon ideologues for whom empire is a surrogate for their own personal weakness). In the end, subverting the American empire is our job. It has to come from the people.

It's funny that the "righties" are so jealous of this trip. The thought of Obama being the "preferred" candidate and being treated like a rock star bugs the sh*t out of them. ha ha ha ha ha

That being said, I think it's good that O's going on this trip. Don't forget the right would damn him if he didn't and damn him when he does, so he'll be criticized no matter what. I agree though that it most like is for show, but I think it's important to see how he is greeted, how he acts on the world stage.

McCain went and told us how safe things were and how easy it was to walk down the street in Iraq, remember that LIE????

What bothers the tightie righties IS the fact that the world is looking forward to meeting him, so many from the Press will be there, taking attention away from McCain, and more than likely Obama will be treated like a star and will be much more well liked than they want to see.

The negative side however is that Obama WILL be watched so closely that any even "minor" gaffe will be reported 24/7, because we know how our media loves to portray the negative on him. I have high hopes though and think he'll do just fine, much to the Republicans chagrin.

For those of you not yet aware of it - our current president is the laughing stock of the civilised world. Bush has made the image of America one of ignorance and arrogance (the Ugly American). I for one, welcome the chance to project intelligence and enlightenment as the face of America. I actually think that's a GOOD thing. Obama is that face. Actually I have read that Angela Merkel was quite upset with the presumptuousness of the 0-team planning that speech at the Brandenburg Gate without any clearance. There is certain protocol that foreign governments must follow, and 0-man put her in a very sticky wicket........she can not treat someone who is only a presumptive nominee for POTUS in any way which would look like she was entering into USA politics. Of course, the 0-team should have known that, but they are so arrogant they think everyone presumes what they do...he will be POTUS. Not so fast boys, he is still a presumptive nominee, even though he is a very audacious presumptuous nominee.............and he will be treated as such in Europe.........I wonder if they might even resent it if he stages some big stadium pep rally. It would be good for him to keep in mind that there is protocol when visiting a foreign country.

It will be interesting to watch!

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 11:38 AM on 07/18/2008

The American public are a bunch of children, unfortunately. The vast majority of voters seem to make their decision based on sound bites, snapshots, hear-say, and questions like "Who would I like to have a beer with?" Sad. At least in this case Obama will have a chance to counteract some of McCain's undeserved foreign policy cred. Unlike McCain, Obama knows the difference between Sunni and Shia, Iran and Al Qaeda. He knows that countries like Czechoslovakia no longer exist. Obama knows his stuff, and he'll receive an enthusiastic welcome while abroad. McCain's foreign policy "expertise" is completely fictional, invented by his campaign and the media.

ABC and WaPo do not have credibility. They lie everyday, spin and even ignore polls that favor Obama. Take a look:
"ABC News/Wash. Post withheld results of poll favorable to Obama
Summary: ABC News and The Washington Post issued staggered releases of the results of their latest poll, withholding from their first release results favorable to Sen. Barack Obama, including the finding that 50 percent of registered voters would vote for Obama for president versus 42 percent for Sen. John McCain. The next day, the Post ran an article headlined "Poll Finds Voters Split on Candidates' Iraq-Pullout Positions," which did not mention Obama's 8-point lead over McCain. Later that day, ABC News and the Post issued a second release with additional poll results that stated: "Obama continues to hold most of the advantages in the presidential race."

I am sure Europe and the rest of the world will be happy to see an American leader that can speak in complete sentences. World leaders will be able to converse with a man that will listen. Unfortunately Americans have not seen foreign policy for 7 1/2 long years and this will be totally mis-understood by the American public. It is a new concept for America to talk to other countries, I hope the shock is not to much for the rest of the world.
Oh and when will John McCain be going to meet with world leaders. I know he went on that rescue mission to Columbia, but when will he go on a good will tour. He Can tell them about his plans to bomb Iran, how great the Iraq war is going, his plan to help the US economy , and he can ask for more NATO support in Afganistan. He needs to get out there and jawbone these world leaders so they get on the Straight Talk Express.
