NEW YORK — Phil Gramm, a top adviser to presidential candidate John McCain, is resigning from the role as campaign co-chairman after his comments that the United States had become a "nation of whiners" who constantly complain about the state of the economy.

The former U.S. senator from Texas and past presidential candidate made the remarks earlier this month. McCain immediately distanced himself from the comments, but they have been criticized constantly as McCain tries to show he can help steer the country past its current financial troubles.

Gramm had also suggested that the country was facing a "mental recession" instead of real economic problems. Gramm said in a statement late Friday that he is stepping down as a co-chair of the campaign to "end this distraction."

I wonder how much money Phil Gramm is hiding in the off shore bank he works for, USB? Maybe he quit now so that he can prevent more a more serious embarrassment for his friend, McCain, later when his corruption is revealed.

Whe you are an expert in obscene oil prices and profits, a little soft core porn is pretty mild.

Lets see how long this stays in the mainstream media. I heard Lou Dobbs say yesterday on his CNN (Clinton News Network) that the media was in the bag for Obama. Ever since Obama called him out on his immigration rhetoric, he has been out to slam Obama at every chance. He turned the Phil Grahmm resignation into a slam on Obama's media coverage.

Has anyone heard about Rev. Hagee, or the other one's who name I can't remember right now because it hasn't been in the media for about a month.

Here is one for the media, McCain has known and learned from Dr. Phil Grahamm for over 20 years, why didn't he distance himself from him earlier. Is this the type of JUDGEMENT McCain is talking about.

Gramm's an ass. Glad he's gone. He shouldn't have been there in the first place.

He may have resigned, but I doubt he's going away. "Top advisers" don't go away. They hide behind the curtain and whisper advice ... they speak into microphones that feed into earpieces ... their influence does not end, just their place next to the guy at the podium. When you're as useless as this particular candidate is, you don't offload the folks that at some point or other made you sound as if you knew what was going on.

Well, it's a matter of perspective. Gramm has and makes 9 digit figures. Of course almost everyone else is a whiner. Almost everyone else earns 5 digit figures, or less.

Apart from standing there as if he ate a bowl of cheese for breakfast, what does he do for a living?

Yes---he'll still be advising McFailure on a regular basis.
