Hong Kong's English newspaper The South China Morning Post reported Friday that Chinese authorities have issued a secret ban on blacks, Mongolians and other "social undesirables" from Beijing's bars during the Olympics.

As the content on South China Morning Post's site is for subscribers only, here is an excerpt of the article c/o the Beijing drinking blog Beijing Boyce:

Beijing authorities are secretly planning to ban black people and others it considers social undesirables from entering the city's bars during the Olympic Games, a move that would contradict the official slogan, "One World, One Dream".

Bar owners near the Workers' Stadium in central Beijing say they have been forced by Public Security Bureau officials to sign pledges agreeing not to let black people enter their premises....

Security officials are targeting Sanlitun, which Olympic organisers expect to be a key destination for foreign tourists looking for a party during the Games.

The pledges that Sanlitun bar owners had been instructed to sign agreed to stop a variety of activities in their establishments, including dancing and serving customers with black skin, they said.

China's preeminent English-language media analysis site Danwei didn't lend credence to the SMCP report, calling the high-level ban "unlikely." However Jeremy Goldkorn writes on Danwei that "it is highly plausible that some low level cops have issued such instructions, especially with the current state of high alert in Beijing making officials and government agencies paranoid and very nervous about foreigners."

Further investigation by Beijing Boyce, who interviewed Beijing bar owners on the alleged ban, found that low-level Beijing cops have been visiting the capital city's watering holes and warning owners and employees to keep their eye on black patrons. According to an update Saturday on Beijing Boyce:

An owner said police met with Sanlitun bar reps and told them to monitor black patrons. He said the police told the reps that drug dealers are predominantly black in the area. He said the police did not ask bar owners to ban blacks.

Especially the little water pump and a box of Ramin noodles they'll see outside that says:

Yeah! When they wake up and figure out that half of the American Olympic contingent IS black and they are usually the wealthiest and most famous blacks in the US, like the Dream Team, they may decide to re-think this! (That and the fact that they are all nearly 7 feet tall!)

I'm not surprised.
Without an American passport for (some) cover, being black, youngish (16-40) and traveling internationally has got to be one of the most humiliating and hurtful experiences on earth. There is no surer way of being reminded that black is inferior.

Black is not inferior, racism is.

This is a totally irresponsible, ridiculous comment. I'm black and I've traveled overseas (rarely, if ever, showing my American passport outside of an airport) and I've never experienced anything but the best treatment no matter where I've gone. None of the black people I know who have traveled internationally in Europe, Asia and Latin America have reported such experiences.

Is it just an American passport that provides "some" protection? What about Canadian, British, or French? Your broad statement about the experiences of all blacks traveling internationally is dangerously absurd. Black people are not served well by imagining that everywhere we go, we'll face unremitting hostility - especially when it's blatantly untrue.

I think that the Chinese are not targeting blacks. They are using this to target Mongols who have darker skin. HOwever, if I were a white drug dealer after reading this article I would be signing "happy days are here again!".

But thanks to US history, the Chinese think they must target blacks. Which is stupid.

This may be a learning experience for China. I hope the Kenyan runners aren't slowed by the air pollution. Let their be some Jesse Owens moments.

Oh man, I can't wait for this train wreck to begin. This may be the first watchable Olympics to happen in a long while. Its gonna be great!

"train wreck" is a great description! I can't wait either.

Can anyone explain how any world records set here could be reliable? No matter how hard they try, the Chinese can't do away with ALL the air pollution.

Won't it be questioned whether the record-breaking athlete could have done better somewhere where their lung function was not compromised?

It's ok for the Chinese government to go into African countries and exploit their natural resources but their black population are not good enough to drink in their bars. The rest of the world ought not to tolerate this kind of blatant racism and "massa" mentality. I for one, would never visit a country like this and I truly hope the African populace band together to drive the Chinese scavengers out of their countries. Karma will prevail.

Boy, those communists sure are welcoming and progressive. Chairman Mao would be oh so proud. (I'm being sarcastic.) And to think China is the next imperial super power. Geez. And unlike the U.S. where there would be definite outrage and blowback if some ignorant cops had tried to pull the same stunt, the same kind of stigma and outrage will have zero impact on the Chinese. It will be like water rolling off a Kung Pao chicken's back.

Why in the world did the Olympics committee ever agree to let China host. The athletes are going to come home with lung diseases because of the ungodly smog, and now we find out they won't allow certain races in bars? I can't believe we're holding the Olympics in a backward, racist, communist country. Sad.

Why not? We have held it in the US before, it might be as up front about the racism in the US but it is presetn non the less just not in your face. Also at times in some cities in the US their air isn't much better.
