LOS ANGELES — Batman has sent Spidey packing as king of Hollywood's box-office superheroes.

"The Dark Knight" took in a record $155.34 million in its first weekend, topping the previous best of $151.1 million for "Spider-Man 3" in May 2007 and pacing Hollywood to its biggest weekend ever, according to studio estimates Sunday.

"We knew it would be big, but we never expected to dominate the marketplace like we did," said Dan Fellman, head of distribution for Warner Bros., which released "The Dark Knight." The movie should shoot past the $200 million mark by the end of the week, he said.

Hollywood set an overall revenue record of $253 million for a three-day weekend, beating the $218.4 million haul over the weekend of July 7, 2006, according to box-office tracker Media By Numbers.

"This weekend is such a juggernaut," said Nikki Rocco, head of distribution for Universal, whose musical "Mamma Mia!" debuted at No. 2 with $27.6 million.

Factoring in higher admission prices, "Spider-Man 3" may have sold slightly more tickets than "The Dark Knight."

At 2007's average price of $6.88, "Spider-Man 3" sold 21.96 million tickets over opening weekend. Media By Numbers estimates today's average movie prices at $7.08, which means "The Dark Knight" would have sold 21.94 million tickets.

Revenue totals for "The Dark Knight" could change when final numbers are released Monday.

The movie's release was preceded by months of buzz and speculation over the performance of the late Heath Ledger as the Joker, Batman's nemesis. Ledger, who died in January from an accidental prescription-drug overdose, played the Joker as a demonic presence, his performance prompting predictions that the role might earn him a posthumous Academy Award nomination.

"The average opening gross of the last five `Batman' movies is $47 million. This tripled that, and for a reason," said Paul Dergarabedian, president of Media By Numbers. "A big part of that was the Heath Ledger mystique and a phenomenal performance that absolutely deserves the excitement surrounding it."

"The Dark Knight" reunites director Christopher Nolan with his "Batman Begins" star Christian Bale, whose vigilante crime-fighter is taunted and tested by Ledger's Joker as the villain unleashes violence and chaos on the city of Gotham.

Overseas, "The Dark Knight" added $40 million in 20 countries where it began opening Wednesday, including Australia, Mexico and Brazil. The film opens in Great Britain this weekend and rolls out to most of the rest of the world over the next few weeks.

"The Dark Knight," which cost $185 million to make, also broke the "Spider-Man 3" record for best debut in IMAX large-screen theaters with $6.2 million. "Spider-Man 3" opened with $4.7 million in IMAX cinemas.

"Every single show is sold out," said Greg Foster, IMAX chairman and president. "We're adding shows as much as we can, but we're at 100 percent capacity."

On opening day Friday, "The Dark Knight" also took in more money than previously counted, Fellman said. The film pulled in a record $67.85 million, up nearly $1.5 million from the studio's estimates a day earlier.

The previous opening-day record also had been held by "Spider-Man 3" with $59.8 million.

Women accounted for most of the audience for "Mamma Mia!", which Universal opened as counter-programming to the male-dominated audience for "The Dark Knight."

"With the crowded summer, we knew we would have to find the right weekend, and this seemed like the perfect one considering three-quarters of our audience was female," Rocco said.

Based on the stage musical set to the tunes of ABBA, "Mamma Mia!" features Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, Stellan Skarsgard, Julie Walters and Christine Baranski.

The weekend's other new wide release, 20th Century Fox's animated family flick "Space Chimps," opened at No. 7 with $7.4 million.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Media By Numbers LLC. Final figures will be released Monday.

1. "The Dark Knight," $155.34 million.

2. "Mamma Mia!", $27.6 million.

3. "Hancock," $14 million.

4. "Journey to the Center of the Earth," $11.9 million.

5. "Hellboy II: The Golden Army," $10 million.

6. "WALL-E," $9.8 million.

7. "Space Chimps," $7.4 million.

8. "Wanted," $5.1 million.

9. "Get Smart," $4.1 million.

10. "Kung Fu Panda," $1.8 million.

Maggie Gyllenhaal is one of the ugliest actresses working in movies today.

Casting her as a love interest is one of the worst casting choices in decades. The filmmakers should have used Gwenth Paltrow, Angelina Jolie, Catherine Zeta Jones, Jessica Biel, Elizabeth Hurley, or Scarlett Johansson

You're a philistine. And none of the people you mentioned have any acting chops that could even begin to compare with Maggie's list of movies.

Talk about ugly. You have some first class issues, dude. I'm no more impressed with your spank list than I was the films you consider more relevant or redeaming.

They should call you The Dark Wanker.

"The Dark Knight," $155.34 million"

Okay I don't get this: This number came up well before the end of the day on Sunday. I along with 2 other friends of mine went to see this movie on Sunday evening, 7PM show in Phoenix, Arizona and it saw SOLD OUT! Probably well over 300+ people there.
Now, simply multiply 300 times 4000 + theaters times $7.00 = 8.1Million Plus! Simple Math.
I say The Dark Knight did well over 160Million over the weekend!

I have been waiting for a summer movie like this for a long time, an adult oriented movie that doesn't cater to kiddies. There are movies like Pirates of the Caribbean and Harry Potter that work perfectly for kids to enjoy, but there needs to be a balance of more movies in the tone of The Dark Knight that speak to an older audience, that has a real story, real character development and doesn't rely on CGI to wow people into the theater. Back in the 80's for every Star Wars and ET, you had Bladerunner, Terminator, and Alien that gave a good balance of movies made for each age group.

What makes this movie great is it gets inside of each character and they are all forced to make a decision and suffer the fate of what they do, the movie is all about choice. That is why this blows away half of the crap that is put out these days, this movie has depth, and makes you think, "What would I do in this situation?"

As for whether it is too dark or too bleak, it is just a movie, it is entertainment, and when I goto a movie, I don't think of the problems of the world, I just want to sit back and enjoy the flick, and this one hit a homerun.

Maybe it's considered impolite to state the obvious, but that never stopped me before.

The only thing that draws crowds more swiftly than money (i.e. seeing an enormous budget on display) is death. Were Ledger alive today, the film would have grossed $47 million. No question.

Why we are afraid to state the obvious, I'm not quite sure. Death is a fact of life and the fact remains that almost since the dawn of time (certainly since the era of the Roman colosseum), audiences have found death fascinating.

You're wrong. Spiderman 3 had no such issue. Neither did Pirates 3 or any of the Star Wars blockbusters. And the critical word-of-mouth regarding the performances and overall production outshines all of those.

Don't try to take away from the hard work of everyone involved. It's not like Adams Family Values broke all kinds of records after Raul Julia died. Your premise has no precedent.

"We knew it would be big, but we never expected to dominate the marketplace like we did," said Dan Fellman, head of distribution for Warner Bros., which released "The Dark Knight."

This is their head of distribution? Is that false modesty or is this guy just dumb? Look at the competition. A musical based on the works of ABBA, three cartoons, Hancock, Get Smart. ...

Now consider that a major property like Batman is a money-making machine on its own. Then factor in the whole Heath Leadger's last role thing.

What other outcome was possible?

The Joker was an astounding performance, and I gotta give credit to Nolan and the screenwriter for imagining this perfect post-9/11 movie villain, (Osama Bin Laden, without religion, doing the dirty work himself) and Heath Ledger portrayed it brilliantly. But what sends Ledger over the top for the Best Actor Oscar is the constant lip-smacking. So enthusiastic he his about causing violence and havoc that he can't control his own saliva, with the creepiness factor of an old perverted drunk at the bar playing with his dentures. Wow.

I had the misfortune of seeing Dark Knight and wish I could retrieve the 2 hours I wasted on this worthless piece of junk.

Frank Miller is a horrible, miserable hack of a writer. Filmmakers should not draw inspiration from a schlockmeister like Miller. They should draw inspiration from Henry James, William Dean Howells, Theodore Dreiser, Frank Norris, Thomas Wolfe, Sinclair Lewis, William Faulkner, Ernest Hemingway, Willa Cather, Edith Wharton, F. Scott Fitzgerald, John Steinbeck, Saul Bellow, Walker Percy, Henry Miller, Jack Kerouac, William Burroughs, Kurt Vonnegut, John Updike, Richard Ford, Philip Roth, Alice Walker, Toni Morrison, Jane Smiley, William Gaddis, John Barth, Donald Barthelme, Robert Coover, Don Delillo, Thomas Pynchon, William T. Okay, so you're an old movie buff. Granted the fact that many of the movies you mentioned were good, why does that take away from a good movie in this era?

The odd thing, is that in all your puerile banter, you didn't offer one substantive reason why you thought the movie was "this worthless piece of junk". Curious description, but ok... If you want to portray the intellectual, at least provide some argument outside of preference to back your claim. Otherwise, you look kind of, well...

'Nuff said.

Hey, while you're up there on your sophisticated perch, can you fix the Hubble Space telescope?

Careful, Nitzsche's overman is up there, too. And he's hellbent on vengeance.

Seriously- ATONEMENT? Oh, I get it- anything with a British accent because they're 'sophisticated and complex'. Those stupid American entertainers. So dumbed down. Life is better spent brooding at those you consider beneath the contempt of your artistic taste, right?

Nice try wiseguy, focusing on one film that I cited with a British cast.

The last time I checked, there were no "English accents" in Chinatown, Nashville, The Graduate, Easy Rider, The French Connection, Mean Streets, Goodfellas, Hurly Burly, Glengarry Glen Ros, and One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.

I know the difference between art and tripe and Dark Knight is tripe!

I'm sort of surprised this movie hasn't been picked apart a little more thoroughly on huffpost - let's review the facts, shall we?

* There is a lunatic named the joker. He has no motives other than spreading fear and hatred. Also, he likes to blow things up using¦wait for it¦barrels of oil.
* In order to stop him, gotham city and batman suspend any sort of semblance of due process, illegally capture, forcibly extradite, and incarcerate criminals with no regard to rights, and torture them to get information. oh, and they set up a surveillance system that turns every cellphone in the city into a security camera.
* Because of the aforementioned steps they have taken, and only because of them, gotham city is saved from the madman with the oil.
* There are brief moments when characters wax reflective about the ethics of batman"s behavior, but it is decided in the end that he is destined to be remembered by history as a misunderstood hero.
* Everybody leaves the theater talking about heath ledger, and also how hot christian bale is, but without a thought to spare about the crimes against humanity in the name of justice to which they are being acclimated by Hollywood.

get real, people. there was a time when they would have had to force-feed us this garbage, but now we're slurping it up at what is evidentially a record-breaking pace.

Dude... This isn't Farenheit 9/11, Sicko or any other such film. There is such a thing as suspension of reality for entertainment's sake. I hear what you're saying, but this is a film. An artistic impression of someone's work. At the end of the day, it's nothing more than that.

Then again, I'm the same guy who considers "The Wizard of Oz", a metaphorical life journey, so who am I to talk. *LOL*

Rumor has it that Harvey wasn't dead (it wasn't THAT far of a fall). When Gordon speaks at what seems to be a funeral, it's mearly a ceremony to celebrate Dent who is recovering in Arkham. Rumor also that they will never replace Ledger as the Joker, and the most they will do with sequels is let the audience hear his cackling when Batman goes back to Arkham.

Moot point, methinks, as there will never be a Batman movie this accomplished ever again. I'm just glad it happened in my lifetime.

Bear in mind that most in Gotham don't ever make the connection that Two-Face = Dent so it's conceivable that he could still be alive.

T'weren't make up but motion effects. He acted with a mold over his face that was akin to a moving green screen, and then they computer generated the effects at post production.

Freakin' wicked, that. Blows Tommy Lee Jones in Batman Forever out of the stratosphere.
