LOS ANGELES — Batman has sent Spidey packing as king of Hollywood's box-office superheroes.

"The Dark Knight" took in a record $155.34 million in its first weekend, topping the previous best of $151.1 million for "Spider-Man 3" in May 2007 and pacing Hollywood to its biggest weekend ever, according to studio estimates Sunday.

"We knew it would be big, but we never expected to dominate the marketplace like we did," said Dan Fellman, head of distribution for Warner Bros., which released "The Dark Knight." The movie should shoot past the $200 million mark by the end of the week, he said.

Hollywood set an overall revenue record of $253 million for a three-day weekend, beating the $218.4 million haul over the weekend of July 7, 2006, according to box-office tracker Media By Numbers.

"This weekend is such a juggernaut," said Nikki Rocco, head of distribution for Universal, whose musical "Mamma Mia!" debuted at No. 2 with $27.6 million.

Factoring in higher admission prices, "Spider-Man 3" may have sold slightly more tickets than "The Dark Knight."

At 2007's average price of $6.88, "Spider-Man 3" sold 21.96 million tickets over opening weekend. Media By Numbers estimates today's average movie prices at $7.08, which means "The Dark Knight" would have sold 21.94 million tickets.

Revenue totals for "The Dark Knight" could change when final numbers are released Monday.

Story continues below

The movie's release was preceded by months of buzz and speculation over the performance of the late Heath Ledger as the Joker, Batman's nemesis. Ledger, who died in January from an accidental prescription-drug overdose, played the Joker as a demonic presence, his performance prompting predictions that the role might earn him a posthumous Academy Award nomination.

"The average opening gross of the last five `Batman' movies is $47 million. This tripled that, and for a reason," said Paul Dergarabedian, president of Media By Numbers. "A big part of that was the Heath Ledger mystique and a phenomenal performance that absolutely deserves the excitement surrounding it."

"The Dark Knight" reunites director Christopher Nolan with his "Batman Begins" star Christian Bale, whose vigilante crime-fighter is taunted and tested by Ledger's Joker as the villain unleashes violence and chaos on the city of Gotham.

Overseas, "The Dark Knight" added $40 million in 20 countries where it began opening Wednesday, including Australia, Mexico and Brazil. The film opens in Great Britain this weekend and rolls out to most of the rest of the world over the next few weeks.

"The Dark Knight," which cost $185 million to make, also broke the "Spider-Man 3" record for best debut in IMAX large-screen theaters with $6.2 million. "Spider-Man 3" opened with $4.7 million in IMAX cinemas.

"Every single show is sold out," said Greg Foster, IMAX chairman and president. "We're adding shows as much as we can, but we're at 100 percent capacity."

On opening day Friday, "The Dark Knight" also took in more money than previously counted, Fellman said. The film pulled in a record $67.85 million, up nearly $1.5 million from the studio's estimates a day earlier.

The previous opening-day record also had been held by "Spider-Man 3" with $59.8 million.

Women accounted for most of the audience for "Mamma Mia!", which Universal opened as counter-programming to the male-dominated audience for "The Dark Knight."

"With the crowded summer, we knew we would have to find the right weekend, and this seemed like the perfect one considering three-quarters of our audience was female," Rocco said.

Based on the stage musical set to the tunes of ABBA, "Mamma Mia!" features Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, Stellan Skarsgard, Julie Walters and Christine Baranski.

The weekend's other new wide release, 20th Century Fox's animated family flick "Space Chimps," opened at No. 7 with $7.4 million.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Media By Numbers LLC. Final figures will be released Monday.

1. "The Dark Knight," $155.34 million.

2. "Mamma Mia!", $27.6 million.

3. "Hancock," $14 million.

4. "Journey to the Center of the Earth," $11.9 million.

5. "Hellboy II: The Golden Army," $10 million.

6. "WALL-E," $9.8 million.

7. "Space Chimps," $7.4 million.

8. "Wanted," $5.1 million.

9. "Get Smart," $4.1 million.

10. "Kung Fu Panda," $1.8 million.

Heath Ledger was astounding, disturbing, ...inhumanity personified.

Ledger was awesome! I don't think I've ever been so creeped out by a character in a movie. Incredibly disturbing, an absolute mad man -- what a performance by Ledger. Contrast that with his role in Brokeback Mountain and you see his incredible range. So sad what happened to him. What a talent he was.

I just saw "Brokeback Mountain" for the third time and couldn't get over Ledger's quiet and superb performance in that film. I haven't seen him as the Joker, but I look forward to it. I also lament his loss and thank you for recognizing his talent.

Kingpin is a Marvel character. Batman is DC.

For the world that Christopher Nolan has created several villains could be possible.

Penquin (even though Nolan said he hated Penquin, the idea of this short squat mobster would fit in. Pay no attention to the Penguin from Batman Returns. He doesn't have flippers.)

Two-Face could return. No spoilers, but it is possible.

Catwoman was referenced . Bruce: "Will this protect me from Dogs?" Lucius: "Rottweilers or Chihuahuas? .. it'll protect you from Cats."

The Ventriloquist and Scarface would be interesting. Who isn't creeped out by murderous dolls?

Scarecrow is still alive as seen in TDK, and if they can get Cillian Murphy to return for 5 seconds they can for another feature.

Riddler is a possiblity, and Dr. Who's David Tennent has expressed interest.

Poison Ivy in her old 1980s style would work as black dahlia type.

Mr. Zzzazz could work too, a crazed nutjob who kills people and marks himself with scars for each murder.

Lots of potential for several movies.

Please please please don't let it be the Penguin.

I'd love to see a well-done Ra's Al Ghul in the movies. Mr. Freeze is a possibility I'd like to see done well also... he was handled so horribly in Batman & Robin (but really well in the Batman animated series).

One of the things that makes Chris Nolan's take on Batman so unique is that it actually makes most of the stuff the characters do seem possible. Once you get into far-out stuff like freeze rays and lazarus pits that believability disappears.

Dark Knight is a steaming pile of excrement. Superhero movies are hurting America by dumbing down our culture to death. These movies turn peoples' brains into mush.

Hollywood needs to stop making garbage like Dark Knight.
We need more movies like The Godfather, Godfather Part II, Citizen Kane, All About Eve, Goodfellas, Mean Streets, The Great Escape, To Kill A Mockingbird, In the Heat of the Night, Advise and Consent, The Grapes of Wrath, The Magnificent Ambersons, All the President's Men, Network, Nashville, MASH, Last Year at Marienbad, The Seventh Seal, Twelve Angry Men, Witness for the Prosecution, A Man for All Seasons, Lawrence of Arabia, Midnight Cowboy, the Graduate, The Last Detail, Reds, The Conversation, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, The French Connection, Three Days of the Condor, The Candidate, Serpico, Gosford Park, Annie Hall , Manhattan, Easy Rider, Patton, On the Waterfront, Cat on A Hot Tin Roof, and My Dinner with Andre.

Yeah! And they need to make more music like Elvis and The Beatles!

Come on. You can't be serious. Apparently the only movies worth making are dramas made before 1985. There's room for fantasy/sci-fi movies, too.

BTW - Have you seen The Dark Knight or are your old fashioned tastes reflective of old fashioned ways like prejudice?

It actually didn't have the best weekend ever. These people are measuring the "success" of a movie by ticket revenue, ignoring the fact that the price of tickets has risen dramatically in comparison to movie tickets of previous years. Movie success should be measured on an inflation-adjusted basis.

I paid $9.50 to see Dark Knight, but I paid $3.50 to see Return of the Jedi. For Dark Knight to truly beat Jedi, they need to pull in $800 million at the box office.

Average ticket prices for Spiderman 3 in 2007 was $7.20. The average ticket price for Batman 2008 is $7.75. Spiderman 3 still outsold Batman for the first weekend in terms of # of tickets sold.

Point well taken. However, the fact that peopel where willoing to pay the higer price says something about the movie and movie marketing plan.

OR it just says something about how foolish Americans are with their money.

But keeping with my point. I think that is also a hidden factor. the fact that so many were willing to pay so much more says something. Especially in a market where nobody is buying anything including movie tiockets if you listen to the Hollywood reports.

But good point none-the-less.

1. it's an opening weekend box office record... not total earnings in the theater... ROTJ didn't come close to this weekend's record.
2. historically, the worse the economy the more money made by movies and other small price entertainment. the worse they feel, the more money hollywood makes as people are willing to pay for some escapism. and movies are still less expensive than vacations.
3. go see the film before you criticize everyone who has. you are writing comments on a HuffingtonPost story... you aren't exactly in an elitist position to judge.

I'd like to see a "tickets sold" figure. I paid $9.50 as well last night and wondered (but didn't bother to check) what the prices were for the other films showing at the same theater. If the number of tickets sold was known, calculating with the regular price of a ticket would show how it would have fared if the price hadn't been inflated.

Nevertheless, I have no regrets, loved the film and am still awestruck by Heath Ledger's performance.

AntonBursch, there's really no reason to be snide.

They don't know the weekend total on Sunday morning. They can project the weekend total on Sunday morning because they extrapolate from previous movies they classify to be similar and come up with an estimate for Sunday tickets based on Friday and Saturday.

It's a guess. An educated guess. Nothing more.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 08:39 PM on 07/20/2008

I'm not talking about math, AntonBursch, I'm talking about COUNTING, you idiot. This article was posted before the first Sunday matinee showing. One-third of the record number didn't even exist yet, so how did they come up with $155.34M? That's five sig-figs! It'd be understandable if they said "150 million-ish", or "selling tickets at a pace faster than Spiderman"... It's like calling an election at three in the afternoon.

P.S. I read your profile and you should really stop calling people idiots
