NY Times:

Last night at the lakeside home of Bill and Phyllis Mack, Senator John McCain told a high-profile crowd of Republicans that he was preparing for a close race in the fall and repeated his line that he liked being the underdog.

With the weather balmy and breezy after a hot day, the reception was held outdoors, in the large backyard of the Mack home, with the main part of the reception area sheltered under a white tent.

Mr. Mack is a prominent real estate developer, a founder and managing partner of Apollo Real Estate Advisors. He also sits on the regional advisory board of JP Morgan Chase and is a director of City and Suburban Financial Corporation.

Earlier in the afternoon, Mr. McCain arrived in the Hamptons by helicopter and went to lunch at "The Creek," the estate of the billionaire Ronald Perelman.

Now if he would only ferry over to Fire Island for the 'tea dance', would he still be a Maverick.

S. 256 Bankruptcy Abuse Prevention and Consumer Protection Act of 2005
This law made it harder for people to erase debt by declaring bankruptcy. A Washington Post report said the law represented the most significant change to bankruptcy law in 25 years. The bill was backed by the White House, the credit card industry, retailers, and financiers. A Washington Post article said the "bill would require many people filing for bankruptcy court protection to repay a portion of their debt under Chapter 13 of the bankruptcy code rather than allowing them to erase it almost entirely under the more commonly used Chapter 7. It is estimated that the proposed legislation would force 30,000 to 100,000 additional filers a year into Chapter 13." The bill's supporters said it was needed to rein in debtors who used the previous bankruptcy law to abuse the system.
The bill was opposed by consumer rights groups who said it was too harsh and did not take into account dire situations faced by those who face divorce, disease, job loss, and other crises.
Washington Post reported that the "banking, credit card, and retail" industries, supporters of the bill, gave more than $56 million to candidates and parties during the 2004 elections, most of it going to Republicans.
The bill was passed by the Senate and House in April 2005 and was signed into law by the president on April 20. Its provisions took effect in October of 2005.
John McCain voted for this, Country first?

once again proving that it is rich neo cons, against middle class and poor democrats and independents. Elite wealth vs. hard working people. Now who do you think is going to win that one?? I hope this time things change and the working people actually get a chance to have a say in things for a while. But, it wont last long. The rich will devise some way to get total control again. after all, they think they are better than everyone else , and think they deserve it.

"WASHINGTON - Barack Obama cut back on his spending in June after securing the Democratic presidential nomination, building up his cash on hand as Republican rival John McCain outspent him with a heavy dose of television advertising.

Unlike McCain, who spent more than he raised in June, Obama accumulated cash during the month, holding back on a ramped-up television campaign until July."

Sounds like another campaign who spent money she didn't have.. Smart money management by Barack and McCain spending like a drunken Hampton sailor..

Economy number one issue in America and Americans want a person who can plan, budget and appropriate spending accordingly.

yes We Can... Obama 2008, 2012

How many friggin billionaires does this country need, anyway? I suppose every billionaire has a right to have six billionaire kids, who each deserve to pass on their wealth without end, as well.

I think its time to bring back the 61% tax bracket. Kennedy lowered it from 91% to 61%, you know. After a few more bank failures you may figure out why the graduated income tax was imposed.

Well isn't that special, all the rich folks got together to count their money, complain about some of their stocks going down and hoping the price of oil will stay high until they and their idiot in chief are safely out of office, oh, and McNuts, he was probably asleep on the sofa, drooling!

This is why it makes no difference how much money John McCain raises. Obama is going to win by a much bigger margin that Republican politicos and pundits can afford to admit:

http://blogs.wsj.com/washwire/2008/07/18/nevada-gop-cancels-convention-opts-for-conference-call/

The Republican brand has been so poisoned by George W. Bush and Richard B. Cheney, the only people who care enough to defend them or to promote John McCain are Republican politicians and the people who derive an income from doing so. Too many ordinary Republicans are so completely disheartened, they just don't care anymore.

Good lord...
I am watching McC speak to the auto workers last Friday on CSPAN...

This is the first time that I have ever watched him in totality....

This guy is a freaking idiot! He can't keep a thought process or complete many of his sentences.
His "speech" is going from to point to point like a pinball!

He speaks issues with no substance to back it up... he will reform, make us prosperous and win wars... and make us secure... and that's it!
No way on how he's going to do it....

People are really voting for this guy?

So he's a voracious reader? I wonder if he still plans to hike the grand canyon this summer as he claimed a couple of months back. I suspect both claims have about the same credibility.
