SYDNEY, Australia — Pope Benedict XVI met privately on Monday with Australians who were sexually abused as children by priests, ending a pilgrimage to the country with a gesture of contrition and concern over a scandal that has rocked the Roman Catholic church.

The pontiff held prayers and spoke with four representatives of abuse victims _ two men and two women _ in the last hours of his 9-day visit to Australia for the church's global youth festival.

The victims did not speak publicly after the meeting. Support groups for other victims dismissed the gesture as a public relations stunt.

The abuse scandal was a sour undertone to the trip for World Youth Day, which is supposed to be a celebration of faith that inspires a new generation.

On Saturday, Benedict delivered a forthright apology for the scandal, saying he was "deeply sorry" for the victims' suffering. But victims said this was not enough, and demanded that Benedict do more to provide financial compensation and psychological help for them.

The Vatican did not give details of the conversations between the pope and the victims he met for about one hour on Monday "as an expression of his ongoing pastoral concern for those who have been abused by members of the church."

"He listened to their stories and offered them consolation," a Vatican statement said. "Assuring them of his spiritual closeness he promised to continue to pray for them, their families and all victims.

"Through this paternal gesture, the holy father wished to demonstrate again his deep concern for all victims of sexual abuse," it said.

The pope, who has made trying to repair damage caused by the scandal one of the themes of his papacy, held a similar meeting with clergy abuse victims in the United States during a visit there in April.

Bernard Barrett of the Broken Rites group, which estimates there are thousands of clergy sexual abuse cases in Australia, said the victims met by the pope were carefully chosen as people who would not cause trouble.

"It doesn't alter things, because it's purely public relations," Barrett told the Fairfax Radio Network. "I think it's a cynical exercise.

Benedict left Australia for Rome mid-morning on a chartered plane. At a brief ceremony at the airport, Prime Minister Kevin Rudd thanked the pope for coming and announced that Australia would post an ambassador in the Vatican for the first time. Former conservative deputy prime minister Time Fischer will take up the post, which has previously been Ireland-based, next year.

Benedict's pilgrimage to Australia was the furthest journey yet of his three-year papacy, and one intended to inspire a new generation of faithful while trying to overcome the dark chapter for his church from the sex abuse scandal.

Summing up his message, Benedict told young pilgrims at a Mass on Sunday that a "spiritual desert" was spreading throughout the world and challenged them to shed the greed and cynicism of their time to create a new age of hope.

The Vatican said some 350,000 faithful from almost 170 countries packed the Randwick race track _ many of them camping out in sleeping bags in the mild chill of the Australian winter _ for the outdoor Mass.

Benedict urged the young Christians to create "a new age in which hope liberates us from the shallowness, apathy and self-absorption which deadens our souls and poisons our relationships."

Since the subject of Christianity and homosexuality has come up on this thread more than once, I feel compelled to share the following excellent article on the subject by a bona fide scholar of Near Eastern Studies and religious traditions:

Many good comments, and many not so good ones. Why can anyone with even a small brain think that religion makes any common sense? Come on people, THINK!

It's tough for the Pope nowadays. He and his church are answerable for crimes committed by his priests. Gone are the good old days when the Catholic Church had ultimate authority and could break dissenters on the rack and burn heretics at the stake.

Maybe the Bishop of Rome can pull a few hundred million out of his desk drawer and do what is truly righteous- and provide some compensation for the victims of clergy abuse- instead of yammering on about what is largely the fault of the RC Hierarchy. In the final analysis they have only their utter resistance to change and their medieval Dogmatics to blame.

Could it be that the spiritual desert was caused by an apostate church that condones preverse priests and homosexual priests?

Religion, particularly the brand offered by the Vatican, is nothing more than servitude and obedience. Old news as far as I am concerned.

These guys think that the more robier and the bigger the crown, and more puffy the gownage, the closer they get to God.

Jesus died on the cross in a loin cloth.

Born naked, die naked. Fewer pockets to stuff with loot.

The hypocrisy displayed by Pope Benedict defies belief. He refers to the blight of "sexual degradation" in society without referring to the Catholic churches vast pedophilia scandal. Two days later, he does get around to mentioning, oops, maybe we did have a little problem of our own. He cites global warming and the exploding world population growth as crises that need to be addressed. And yet, the Catholic church vehemently opposes contraception of any kind, including condoms in AIDS ravaged Africa. Finally, he has the blind audacity to cite the gross disparity in wealth in America and the world while wearing velvet robes embossed in gold thread and presiding, in Vatican City, over the greatest hoard of gold, art, cash, real estate and other forms of wealth ever accumulated in the history of civilization. Man, either he's a sucker or we are.

The one thing that has always stumped me about religion and especially this religion is the long standing fact that humans are a basic sexual animal just like every other mammal in this (in their words, god created) ecosystem. Hunger, reproduction and self preservation are the basics of life. Denying these basics puts them in a losing battle right from the start. You would think that a reasonable person would identify and admit to what is real and then try to shape it to a better condition by leadership and not fall back on the old church standard of threatening and forbidding. I forbid you little one to crawl up on the counter and get into the cookie jar, hasn't worked since man first made cookies. This persons previous job was to oversee the actions of the rest and he had hands on influence in the cover up. Why is it so common to find people like that in high positions. The previous pope was a good and decent man but he was hamstrung by having this guy right bellow him in the chain of command.

So is he going to sell the Vatican's vast collection of graven images and us the money to take care of the poor?

OK you got it...sorry to tell you but thats the easy part.Sorta like quitting smoking. You quit by well... not smoking any more. The hard part is following your own advice. Such an incredibly niave approach.Amigo there. is a 2000+ yr history that shouts man is unable to follow this path and quess where the people who tried and failed(but didn't give up the struggle) turned for help. Yep They found they NEEDED RELIGION. Those that tried on thier own and quit when they failed turned to other things...mostly totalitarianism such as Marxism. The first group includes the well known saints such as Agustine but there are many many more who never are recognized. When you refuse help you quit trying. Do you know anything about "pride". Do you know yourself? Are you a quitter or a fighter? The old testament is nothing but a story of a people(Isreal) coming to grips with this struggle of trying on thier own to follow your self advice and sometimes seeking Gods help and sometimes willfully doing thier own thing. There's nothing new under the sun except for those who dont know history.

"mostly totalitarianism such as Marxism. "

And *fascism.* Oh, that's right; silly me. The pope *supported* the rise of fascism as a counter to the atheist Bolsheviks. Must be that whole authoritarian thing...

Bad Military Historian. No biscuit.
