The AP reports that Barack Obama reversed a two-month downward trend by raising more and spending less. He took in $52 million in June, more than twice the nearly $21.5 million raised by John McCain. Obama had $72 million cash on hand to McCain's $27 million.

The Politico points out that Obama raised $25 million on the last day of June alone:

His one-day haul represents nearly half of his monthly total and more than Republican rival John McCain generated for the entire month. During the month, McCain did not have a single day in which he raised a million dollars.

But, the Politico explains, McCain isn't Obama's real competition:

It also is the minimum the Illinois senator will need to generate each month between now and November if he is to match the more than $200 million budget the Republicans have set for boosting McCain's campaign.

The true competitor to Obama will be the Republican National Committee, rather than McCain, who has agreed to accept about $84 million in public financing for his general election campaign.

Hillary Clinton, meanwhile, loaned herself another $1 million after leaving the race. The Washington Post details:

Clinton raised just $2.7 million in June and finished the month with $25.2 million in campaign debt, most of that, $13.175 million, owed to Clinton herself, according to her report to the FEC. She has said she will seek to repay the campaign's debts to others before paying herself back. Campaign vendors awaiting payment included the firm of strategist Mark Penn, owed $5.3 million, and the Dewey Square Group, owed $236,000.

The campaign also owed local firms in states such as Pennsylvania and Indiana, where Clinton fought in late, competitive primaries. She owed nearly $1,800 to Kokomo Center Schools in Indiana, for instance, and nearly $6,000 to Dakota Pizza in Wynnwood, Pa.

Someone kept saying don't worry, the Hillary supporters have paid off HRC's debt. At this rate it will take 10 months.

OH LOOK!
Positive news about Obama and the campaign but here go his supporters focuing on Hillary and negativity.

Wow, hating has really become a way of life for you Hillary obsessed.
It's really kind of hilarious since on every story about Hillar there is comment after comment saying things like :why don't they go away" or " I'm so tired of them" Or She is so annoying..."
The irony of those comments posted on those threads is silly and foolish enough but here on a good news for Obama to read the inane and vacuous anti Hillary rhetoric is pretty funny.

And Telling.
Obsessed with all things Hillary you cannot manage to not do whatever you possibly can to further divide the party.
Pretty funny considering the accusations you level at others.
I'd think you would at least have the self discipline to make an attempt to let it go and try to heal the rift your own ugliness started, even if you don't like her... though how you can not like a person based on neocon parroting and media spin is beyond me.

How vapid and predictable.

What would you do if there was Unity...
or if... gasp... she was on the ticket? Or in the cabinet actively working to hold the criminals in this administration accountable.

OOPS.
sorry, Obama is in the process of throwing that out the window--- or under the bus with our fourth amendment.

very nice.

You are so full of it ....That debt is still there Clinton $25.2M in debt times a wasting. She has until the Democratic national convention at the end of August to raise money to pay off her loan, an unlikely prospect.

I am so pleased. I was concerned funds may drop off after the primary was concluded and also because the economy is so tight. Roll on, all the way to DC!

Have no FEAR. It's still summer vacation time and ppl are taking a break from politics as well. Come September, I look for BAM BAM to be drenched in campaign monies. I am a fixed donor with an automatic monthly stipend.
I would feel bad not being a part of HISTORY.

I'm still hoping that I'll be one of the fortune donors to be selected to receive a trip to Denver, have a backstage pass at the convention, and get an opportunity to meet Barack Obama. I know the odds of being selected are slim, but there's nothing wrong with hope.

*Fingers crossed*

Kane,

I have donated to Obama as well. What are the guidelines/qualifications and where on his site is this contest. I'd love to go as well (slim chance or not).

Thanks

Amst,

From Obama website:

Make a donation of $5 or more between now and midnight on July 31st, and you could be one of 10 supporters chosen to meet Barack backstage and watch his acceptance speech in person.

Each of the 10 selected supporters can bring a guest, and will be flown to Denver to spend two days at the convention, culminating in Barack's speech on Thursday, August 28th.

Make a donation now and you could have a front row seat to history.

Go here http://www.barackobama.com/index.php and click on "Open Convention"

Thanks,

kane~

So she used a public school for a campaign event and still owes them $1,800? Can't pay the pizza joint? I can see waiting to pay a phone bill on shut-off phones, but the pizza joint? She thinks it's fine to stiff the pizza delivery boy? Disgusting.

I used to like Hillary. I was an early supporter. She and Bill blew it and now I want them to pay the money they owe and go away.

I used to like Hillary. I was an early supporter. She and Bill blew it and now I want thwe have something in common.
Except change the names around.

I don't buy media spin, I didn't buy it against the Clinton's and I don't buy it about Obama, positive or negative.
I research.
Only those who have no critical thinking skills buy into such blatant propaganda so selectively.
And then repeat it over and over until its "true.

Gee, where have I heard that before.

Oh yes, the diehard Bushies who the Neo-cons conned.
I never thought I'd see the day when so called Progressives would be taken in that way- or worse, just cynically and knowingly use that nonsense to be such nasty, mean spirited and hateful people against there own.

The fact is Clinton is more Progressive than Obama as reported by an independent group who analyze all the date, from voting to co-sponsorship and sponsership of different bills. Not that you would believe it- or even read it since it doesn't play into the myth amd would require cool headed objectivity.
But here is the link anyway.

How the heck can McCain take almost 100 million of taxpayer money and the RNC can still spend as much as it wants from private donations? How is this public financing (other than the huge donation)? Talk about a broken system. And then McCain criticizes Obama for not wasting 100 million taxpayer dollars as well? Unbelievable.

I agree. McCain finds a loophole in his own campaign finance reform and is now able to receive $70,000 from each donor because of his hybrid campaign structure. So, he takes money from wealthy donors, lobbyists and PACs and then takes public financing. It is the only way he can compete, but what about the spirit of the very law he wrote? Does McCain stand for nothing? I mean, come on, when you find a loophole for your own law you are not much of a maverick. More like politics as usual.

Just like the loophole he wrote into the bill, being able to use a family members airplane.

The DNC and the RNC have completely different rules when it comes to public financing. I read that under the RNC Public Financing rules an individual could donate up to $70 million by making smaller donations to different areas of McCain's campaign. So I totally agree with Obama bowing out of Public Financing as he would have been limited to the $84 million. I believe that the only reason that McCain is crying about Obama not keeping his word about accepting public financing is because he knows very well that there is absolutely no way that he could beat him at fundraising.

If we want to keep special interests from influencing Obama, we all need to dig down and send his campaign money. (I am not or will I ever be a fund-raiser).

In the final analysis, we can put him in a position to look the special interests in the eye and say "sorry, but I'm already 'bought' by the American voters." We have an unprecedented chance to alter the political landscape. Let's not let it slip away.

I can only may $780 extra month if I decide to go to work somewhere.
