The AP reports that Barack Obama reversed a two-month downward trend by raising more and spending less. He took in $52 million in June, more than twice the nearly $21.5 million raised by John McCain. Obama had $72 million cash on hand to McCain's $27 million.

The Politico points out that Obama raised $25 million on the last day of June alone:

His one-day haul represents nearly half of his monthly total and more than Republican rival John McCain generated for the entire month. During the month, McCain did not have a single day in which he raised a million dollars.

But, the Politico explains, McCain isn't Obama's real competition:

It also is the minimum the Illinois senator will need to generate each month between now and November if he is to match the more than $200 million budget the Republicans have set for boosting McCain's campaign.

The true competitor to Obama will be the Republican National Committee, rather than McCain, who has agreed to accept about $84 million in public financing for his general election campaign.

Hillary Clinton, meanwhile, loaned herself another $1 million after leaving the race. The Washington Post details:

Clinton raised just $2.7 million in June and finished the month with $25.2 million in campaign debt, most of that, $13.175 million, owed to Clinton herself, according to her report to the FEC. She has said she will seek to repay the campaign's debts to others before paying herself back. Campaign vendors awaiting payment included the firm of strategist Mark Penn, owed $5.3 million, and the Dewey Square Group, owed $236,000.

The campaign also owed local firms in states such as Pennsylvania and Indiana, where Clinton fought in late, competitive primaries. She owed nearly $1,800 to Kokomo Center Schools in Indiana, for instance, and nearly $6,000 to Dakota Pizza in Wynnwood, Pa.

And to think that a little over six months ago, no one was giving Obama any chance of winning the Democratic nomination.

I think the political junkies and the talking heads and the 24hour news culture get so wrapped-up in the day to day he said/he said mentality, that we sometimes fail to pause and recognize the great accomplishments of this campaign and its remarkable place in history.

We are witnessing, and spearheading the rebirth of America. The word "groundswell" comes to mind. The neocons don't know whether to shi+ or go blind.

It is indeed a groundswell. Just this morning my brother-in-law, a retired bond broker from Houston (who has never voted for a Democrat in his entire life), telephoned me to talk about Obama. He views the election of Barack Obama as critical to the survival of America. We went on to discuss Al Gore's recent speech and his challenge to America that we remove carbon fuels from our transportation fleet within ten years. His opinion? He has seen, as I have, that most [so called] experts being interviewed by the MSM are saying that it can't be done. My opinion, and my brother-in-law's opinion, is that it must be done. My dyed-in-the-wool Republican brother-in-law believes that the election of Obama and the successful implementation of Gore's challenge are the only hope we have of saving our society from complete failure and chaos. This is how a groundswell happens.

The old saying of putting your money where your mouth is seems to apply. They were vocal and angry, but apparently their support went only so far.

They can't because the primary campaign limits are still in effect and they are probably maxed out

But . . but . . but. . . what about ALL those supporters who never donated one red penny towards Hil? And you know there are numbers in the low millions! They need to get off their cans and kick in a buck or two towards Hil's debt. They OWE it to her.

It seems with 18 million voters there should be $5 each that a great number of them can put into the coffer to retire her debt. If they were organized like Barack, they'd figure out a way to steamroll a drive to raise that money in a day drawing upon her 18 million voters. I would send my $5 if I were one of her voters from the primary. It's an idea at any rate. Obama '08

The loans owed to small businesses is particularly infuriating. Those are huge numbers for small businesses.

$6000 for pizza in a one town in PA. I would love to know the story behind that. Was that one company providing pizza for several volunteer locations?

The difference between the way the two campaigns handled their money during the primaries is stark. Clinton knew she was in financial trouble long before PA and still they spent $6000 on pizzas and the business has yet to be paid. I volunteered in two states and most, if not all of the food we ate was donated by other volunteers. Obama paid his debts as he went.

I have to say that I feel bad for these businesses and do hope that they are reimbursed. I think that Hillary and Mark Penn should be the last debt the campaig retires. If I were sure that a donation would go to a vendor, I would donate to retire the debt. I really believe that the supporters who encouraged the prolonged primary knowing the financial trouble the campaign was in should pay Hillary and Penn (but only after the vendors are paid.

I sort of feel bad for them, but when the newspapers were all reporting she was broke, why did they continue to sell her stuff on credit?

If they had refused, a lot less money might have been wasted.

SO we see yet anoter story about Obama was fabricated to make him look weak and build up McCain to appear to be able to trounce him. MSM once again attempting to make a "SUPERBOWL" out of this election.

WOW!!!!

All of the reports of "Obama's fundraising troubles" were indeed premature.

This man has an incredible fundraising operation. And if his June numbers are any indication, I look for him to double that amount in July - on the strength of his $5 fundrasing to try and win backstage passes to see Obama deliver his nominating speech in Denver in front of 80,000 people.

He is setting all types of records and shows no sign of letting up.
